I printed up the specs on tightening torque on the head bolts and cant find it..

My computer is packed away as I am sanding and plastering and in between coats I am going out to the garage and putting the engine together.

Such a simple thing.... farrrk!

Just got back from patrolapart and did not get any discount. .. was I supposed to.
Anyway back to sanding walls.

Nice change to have a bloke give free advice and not come around to take money off me for something he knows is an easy fix.

I have a lot to update but a bit busy at the moment but just wanted to mention that the rear bar I have made has stood up to its first real test..

At Brindabella while we were negotiating a really tough down hill rock ledges my rear bar landed hard on a rock ledge and came through unscathed..... my welding has held up so far!!!!!!

Bloodyaussie

So how do you find the suspension offroad?

Suspension is brilliant... I am worried about not having the correct bump stops and need to get onto that soon.

I think Andy wants to change his set up partly from watching how much flex I get now.

Nothing troubles me specially with the front locker... I know in the past there were tracks we did that would have given me a real hard time and with the locker and the amount of suspension travel I get I need not drive like I stole it which in turn hopefully means less stuff breaking.

I have still not gone out with the 35's on where clearance might be an issue to see how all that goes.... soon I think!!!

Well I am finally going to fit the engine over a period of days... it will start this weekend I think and will take as long as it needs to.

I am not going to rush to get it back together I am going to take my time.

I also got all the gear I need to convert the car back to petrol only.

I put most of the engine back together yesterday and George will come around on Friday to set the valve clearances.

I would start now but have my mums wake and ashes to deal with plus my Uncle is arriving tonight and look forward to drinky and a good meal tonight.

I cant wait to start but am a bit nervous... hope it all goes smoothly for the sake of my marriage ?? he he he!!!

This is the list I can think of so far.

Engine swap (swap some stuff from old to new)
Gearbox swap and more than likely clutch.
Remove gas system
Install new petrol tank and plumb up plus make up relay and switches.

I would also like to do front and rear diff oil.

I need to send my radiator off and get the guts cleaned out as I think that chemiweld has not done it any good.

A bit to do but will not rush it.....

What a big day... started early before taking Erica to school then back to it removing as much as possible before it gets to hot.

At 11th I had to go and pick my mums car up then stop past clutch industries to pick up my new clutch.. then headed off to patrol apart to get all new hoses.

When I got back I got stuck in and removed the last of the stuff around the engine.. Bloody engine mounts were a pain in the ass.

I had a chain snap and was lucky there was no damage.. I then used one of my own chains!!!

Just as I got the engine free George turned up to do the valve clearances on the new engine.

A lot to do tomorrow but as I said I am not rushing.

Nah i think he means fill the sub ( belly tank) and keep the main tank as the sub.

Jonathan the sub tank is 70ltrs?? The main is 90ltrs you'll end up over filling the smaller tank if you plumbed it arse about

I wouldn't a clue how it would work but surely you could grab a standard 95L tank with fuel pump and use the gas wiring to switch between the two tanks? Somehow.

BigRAWesty
11th February 2014, 06:39 PM
Could you take advantage of the wiring for the gas to get a normal 95L tank and run the two tanks completely separate?

This is my plan when I get it done. Just run 2 Fuel solinodes (feed and return), and a twin pole switch thingy'ma'bob so you run the solinodes of one side and your Fuel gauge off the other..
This way both tanks are activated via switch.

But I can see why George says about over filling the sub maybe. You'll have to check heights to be sure..

Another way you could setup is a simple fuel pump on a switch. So fuel transfers from sub to main. Join both tanks via a top balance line so if you forget your transferring the over flow from the smaller tank keeps circulating until you turn the pump Off..
A switch with a light to show activation would be recommend I'd think..

Possibly also a low Fuel cut off so you don't burn out the pump..

Bloodyaussie
11th February 2014, 06:54 PM
I have already purchased what I was told I needed by Patrolapart??

Now this is where I think I have been given a bum steer.... In my LR tank I have a high pressure pump built into the gauge and now they have given me.. one lower pressure inline pump (3-5psi) as the transfer pump.

Now the high pressure pump I have will not fit into the set up they have given me?? as I never had an original tank and pump set up I am not 100% sure what was there.

I got the twin filler neck and all the hoses to plumb it but dont think I have the right pump set up... confusing?

happygu
11th February 2014, 06:59 PM
BA,

Seems like you have a main fuel pump for the main tank, and a smaller transfer pump to transfer from the Sub to the Main, just like a GU...

Twin fillers as you have a fill hose to each tank.

Seems like you have a main fuel pump for the main tank, and a smaller transfer pump to transfer from the Sub to the Main, just like a GU...

Twin fillers as you have a fill hose to each tank.
Mic

No I have a high pressure pump inbuilt to my long range tank that I have had all along but this does not fit into the main tank I purchased???

Where is the pump in an efi normally?? I thought it was in the tank?? but the manual does not show it??

All the research I have done points to them giving me a fuel sender from a tb42s which is much different to mine.. and as I knew mine is the bloody expensive pump?

Now I have to bloody drive back out to Patrolapart again.... fwark this shits me..wasted bloody time!!!!!

Think I may deal with someone else in future.

Can't you put the low pressure pump into the long range sender units and your high pressure pump into the other sender for the standard tank ???

The wrong one looks like a TD setup..
We don't run in tank pumps as ours are on the motor..
Still can be used if you setup a transfer pump setup.
If you run both tanks to motor then you'll need 2 high pressure pumps..

Have you got everything you need ?...Do you have enough help?...

I mentioned I could help out this afternoon, but that is slowly starting to become impossible, as my M-I-L has just found a house to buy, and she needs us to check it out with her, so there goes a couple of hours this afternoon, and then there are dinner plans.

I can still be a go-for to get anything you need, as i still have a couple of hours up my sleeve, or bring my Floor Jack around if it is required.

My comments were made out of frustration as I have not had a good time of late and though it seems like I am a clown and someone to be poked and laughed at I am bordering on serious melt down..

I made the mistake and should have started a whole new thread as discussed with AB to get some help this weekend..

To have my mum die and my car stolen and credit cards abused and a GQ that could not take anymore chemiweld it was all to much.

I did not want to rush getting my car together but having my wifes old car stolen has changed everything and I am worried I will lose some important contracts..

I did not have a chance to chase down people to help I just thought people would know that I desperately needed help and would show up... my wife bought food and drinks for everyone?

As for my car.... Boots is a legend and in the short time he was here he got heaps done then Drew turned up and was here for 9 hours and did not flinch at anything that needed to be done and stayed until the last ...

I was still fitting locks on my front door last night at 11.45am........

The car is 85-90% done but need to sort the petrol tanks??

Will sort that over the next couple of days.

My thoughts are with Boots and his wife whos little girl who's 10th birthday it is today is in hospital in a serious condition with severe pneumonia... as he left here yesterday he got a message saying his daughter had a temp of 40 degrees...

Meltdown over for now....................................

Hey Jonathan, I'm sorry I have not been ale to help you mate, the whole Daddy Daycare is really smashing me mate. Getting me down and really tieing me to the house. The New business means Naomi is working long hours on the weekend and it locks me away.

I have not had the GQ out of the yard since the High country snow trip with you lot........ Whenever that was??? Sad days for me mate.

I know you have a heap on and have had a bloody bad run of it, most here know you have had it piled up. I agree with AB a separate thread asking for help would have been the go bud.

Do you still need a hand mate? If you do then put your hand up in a new thread and let's see if we can get you some help.

People hang a bit of shit on you Because they Like you Allot! Not because they think your an idiot. I appreciate it can get frustrating sometimes though, I have been on the receiving end of that too mate (not here) sometimes the line between humour and disrespect can be very blurred, we try and keep an eye on that line though. It's when people stop watching the line that it can get offensive.

Don't let it all get you down mate, you deserve way better than that.

I am buggered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last weekend I fitted the engine and gearbox and during the week when time allowed I have been plumbing it all up.. spent a lot of time the last couple of days stuffing around with the petrol tanks and pumps and so on.

I still have a bit to do but today I filled up with oil and water and put the battery back in and turned it over a bit before connecting the coil and fuel.. first there was a mix up with the fuel lines as I got them round the wrong way then I went to start for the first time with no joy..

Plenty of spark and fuel but no go... George is popping over later to have a look but I am worried about the birds nest that is the gas wiring and trying to make sense of it and hoping it is not the reason for the non start.

Also not sure as yet but as I have never cranked my car over so much but there is a small knock?? not sure where its coming from as I am doing this by myself and hard to listen for while turning the key.

I swear if this turns out to be a dud I will shoot myself in the face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it is pretty obvious but I am a big penis head who should have not disconnected the gas until after I got the new engine up and running???

The gas is still partly installed and it seems I have to follow the whole system and remove all wiring as it seems to be playing havoc..

Probably need to speak to Rodney as there are a few things I have no understanding of.. we managed to get it to fire but as soon as it warmed up it would not run pointing to it switching from one map to the next??

We by passed the injector starter relay and put power directly to it and it would fire, if in standard form the injector would pulse about 3 times then stop..... and would not start or run??

Fwarrk I hate this shit!!!!!!

Even then we have to play around with stuff and George is not sure but he may have heard a knock?? which involves me blowing my head off!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yay!!!!!!!

I just got home after being at HT's all afternoon and how I feel from last night to right now is night and day!!!

The stress has been unreal with all the crap going on this was not what I needed..

Ok the car is running and idles but the cam is so bloody lumpy it struggles to know what to do.....

George and his dad Harry were finishing the hot valve clearances when I was ordered to leave by a higher power and George will put it all back together tomorrow plus have a play with a couple of things..

I may have to look into whether its possible to tune the ecu or get a piggy back that can cope with how lumpy the cam is???

The knock appears to be coming from the gearbox and only happens when the car is struggling to idle.. look more into that later.

yes please dont say this weekened as your local tour guide will be away.....

Great to see it running mate. I didn't even know it had a big cam but it does sound nice. Hopefully it will settle in nicely.

What'd you end up doing with all the fuel sender issues?

Bloodyaussie

Not as yet mate... still a bit to do and not sure if this cam is going to be viable ???

If not it could be a big expense to put the right cam in... hmmm time will tell.

I will have to start another thread in regards to cams as I think this would be missed by many.

I so do look forward to driving it hopefully today.

Got to thank George so much for his help and also his dad Harry... Also Drew, Boots and my wife for doing the whole swap over !!

I have been driving the car for a day and it is blowing to much smoke. .. seems to be valve stem seals.
Even though they are new they have been sitting in the head for a while and may have gone a touch hard..

As for the cam it is so bloody lumpy the car can not be tuned properly and will have to either look into ecu piggy back or change the cam?

Also the car is running so rich. . Its smooth as while driving but as its so rich it lacks power.

A little bit dejected about the whole thing but as George has said it is things that can be fixed.. The car is drivable but the idle is so low and lumpy and after sitting at the lights there is a big puff of smoke.

My wife thought it would be good to go out to yarra glen to the historic gulf station with the family but my boy ruined the day so I dragged him out and am now sitting in the car park while my wife and daughter try and enjoy themselves. .blah

Just keep an eye On those oil level.

Also can you adjust the idle up a bit to aid in the rough idle??

One thing at a time mate. You'll get there..

Bloodyaussie

I bought the motor from a member on here and it was originally from ARB in Bendigo and was in there comp truck.

The motor was being rebuilt after they holed a piston but a tb45 came there way so shelved the TB42.

The motor had the head all redone with new valves and so on... I did find many floors with this motor and pulled a lot of stuff apart and fixed or replaced but I did leave the valve guide seals alone when I should have replaced them.

The cam in the thing would have been fine in a comp truck with a turbo but for a daily it is a shaker!!!

Except for the really lumpy idle it is really smooth to drive...

I do need to do a run up the freeway with someone following me to see if there is any smoke then as this would point to rings also????

I need to speak to smarter people than me about what should be done and look forward to getting treated like shit tomorrow when I phone around!!!

If your seeing blue smoke out the rear when flooring it you may have an issue.
But you still maybe burning off a protective layer New parts and assembly oil. Give it a little.

Hey Jonathan,

Bugger about the engine mate, not all is lost though. The first called I'd make is to the guy that Built, Tuned and Raced that engine. I am sure he will have an insight into both the size of the Cam and best way to deal with it and may be able to point you in the right direction to achieve the best "de-tuned" step for it.

Remember those boys had than thing bouncing off the limiter for 9/10th of the time.

Next call would be to Brett at 4x4obsession as he runs the identical engine Turbo'd in his GQUte. Give him a bell and he will guide you straight mate. He also runs water injection in his TB.

It will all work out bud. Bloody hope so anyway.

Cheers Darren

Jonathan,

Swapping the cam over for the one out of your old motor, might prove to be the easiest if you cant work out the ECU issue quickly.

I'm just gona put my 2 cents in and try and clear up some confusion. This "new" motor is a second hand motor that was ran, used and shelved. The smoke issues could be the grade of oil Jonathan used could be too thin and is being sucked in thru the valve stem seals, i did say to him that it looked like to me it was the valve stem seal because it only puffs smoke after idling for a few minutes and between shifts not under load which i saw while driving behind him after work yesterday. When i had my computer on his motor yesterday it was showing it was running rich but also showed that the o2 sensor was slow to react but when the motor is cold and using the coolant temp sensor circuit to warm up ran smoothly. With out making the motor hunt the IAC valve and TPS have been set within spec so the standard ecu can try and use it basic map tolerances to run this lumpy cam which is most likely suited for a carby or turbo application.

The new engine was never going to work in stock form including the head.... the head was set up to run turbo and was down in compression, a whole lot of machining had been done to it.

The engine will be sold to try and get some money back to run in a turbo set up..

My old engine is getting a complete makeover and done right... I have left the whole job up to Harry and his boys to do whats best and done right the first time.

I dont want to hear "You should have done this or that" as I have made my decisions and want to car to be right for the next 4-5 years.

It is getting a tow cam fitted that is brand new and as you can see from the pics my oil pump gears were rooted... lots of other stuff being done..

I am scared but looking forward to getting my car back and will share a beer with Bruce when he is back!!!!!

Lol i'm not that short mate!! Haha. Nah theres 2 problems with doing the cam in the car, 1 everything infront of the motor needs to be removed coz its a long sucker including condenser so why spend money on removing the ac gas when i don't have to. 2 coz you need to undo part of the sump to take the timing cover off i didn't want the sumo to leak later dosn the track so that getting resealed :)

Thanks mate, dads been in the game for over 35 years so the people we use know the quality he demands with time always a factor, sometimes we can get certain jobs fast tracked but this job would normally have a 7 day turn around time anyway even when we are flat out. Also having the right tools and equipment at your disposal makes it alot easier lol
