Left the farkin' thing at home. That's how much it's doing my head in. Easy fix, don't drive it. ha!
I'm only getting the slave cylinder done, tyre rotate, engine oil, replace brake fluid and power steering, seal on handbrake housing, minor elec fix ups, couple of rubber replacements and a good looking over.
Hopefully not much!!!!
Got a rear superior 4340 adjustable panhard coming in so that will not bend in my life time!!!
The front panhard looks nicely tucked up behind the Harris nose so hopefully that will be fine until money permits!
Yeh very frustrating. If I don't get it looked and or fixed soon, drastic measures will be taken. Either rip the farkin pos 3L out and put a 4.2 in, expensive exercise though, $ I don't have, so that idea has a sub-10% chance... Or just part it, sell and recoup some $ out of it and look at other options. At this stage I'm very over it. Lost a lot of nerves last few weeks. For now , she can sit in the driveway, as its a waste of diesel driving it as it is...
Whoah, what have I missed Hodge? What's going on with your car mate?
Inconsistent power issues, I've had for a long time now mate. One day she is a rocket, the next shes a complete slug. Mainly in 4th and 5th, but lately it's been across the gears. And I touch, or do nothing to it inbetween. It's like everytime I turn the engine on or off, the car rolls the dice, to set the power it's gonna have. For example, one set of lights on take off, it shoots off nearly snapping my neck, good in 2nd, 3rd, then 4th she just sits there laboring and boost maxes out but she just takes ages to get there. Then the next set of lights, it can be vice versa... Very slow on take off, then once I get to 3rd or 4th, she absolutely hammers... Thats just one of the examples. Sometimes it gets boderline dangerous when mergin on freeways etc...
And I've head a thread about it before asking for opinions, and gone through everything from MAF, to air filter, to adjusting the needle and dawes valve till cows come home. Mudski helped me a lot in this part, with the gear and MAFS, and setting it all up. Out of ideas. Just fed up with it.
Have you tried a can of that intake cleaner hodge? Subaru sell it and I think you can buy it at auto shops also, just has a different name. Worth a shot...
This might be a veeeeery long shot, but I used to have a company car that had the same symptoms, turned out the brake light switch running from the pedal was wearing prematurely and intermittantly sticking in the "on" position, fooling the engine management system into thinking I had my foot on the brakes, when it happened it'd cut power so you'd hit the accelerator and it'd feel like it was running on one pot.
Meticulously going through all of the connectors in the loom may be your best bet. Also the 'Knockometer" method might work in this case. Tapping the handle of a screwdriver on components and wiring loom. In a perfect world, it would be excellent to do that while the car was on a dyno, as you could see if there was a change. (we used to do that on locomotives on load test and it worked in many hard to fix cases).
Hey mate, no I haven't. But I'll take that onboard. The problem is, if something is broken, then why does it drive ridiculously good sometimes. One would think it would be a slug all the time. I've tried all the surface bits, like full NADS, Egr blocked, new intercooler, new MAF's, cleaned MAF's, new air filter, new fuel filter.... List goes on.
Haven't driven it for 3rd day now and my blood pressure is normal now. Don't intend to, while I ponder what to do, whilst consulting with the finance minister.
Well I dropped the gq off to Patrolapart this morning.
Lets just say it has to spend the night there.
I've been treating it like poo and neglecting it for a few years and the list of things is quite extensive....lol
Cracked engine mounts to bearings to radius arms to the nylons and much more...
It's getting a small makeover and I promised myself to look after it from now on...bahaha
Will be interested to see what you get done and the associated $ damage
Hey Eric, didn't realize you still had dramas mate. As an uneducated guess it sounds like a bad electrical connection but that could be anything from a dry solder join in the ecu or other electrical component to a broken wire, where the "break" makes connection and the car drives good then when you go over a bump it breaks the connection and the car drives horribly. I wouldn't mind having a look at it one day just to play around with it....
Do you know anyone with the same year and engine as your trol you could borrow an ecu from ??? Only thing i don't know if the ecu needs to be synced with the bcm tho
Went in to repair the slight leak coming from the head off the power steering mount. Turns out prev owner had snapped a bolt clean off, at first it just looked like it had gunk in it so I poked at it with my sharp hook set. Fuckin thing started to spin! Managed to rotate it enough then hit it with my vice grips. Put some sealant on and torqued to spec then went to replace the pulley for the belt. Last bolt going on, seems like its taking awhile theeeeen I feel it give and the cunt just starts spinning ughhh fix one, make another haha gonna run a tap thru today and see if I can just clean up the thread
Drove it to work, drove it home - on the bitumen!!!
Wow...car feels brand new again!!!
Spent a small a fortune but I am ready for the trip. The boys at Patrolapart did a great job. Even little niggly things like fixing up AB's DIY wiring...lol
Thanks George!
I don't know anybody with the same year and manual that I can compare the pair with. I spent a while, not long ago looking over connections that are at reach. I didn't pull much apart but yeah, as far as everything i got my hands onto it seemed good. But you have the right idea, as it does seem like something electrical. In saying that though few weeks back in Tallarook, if it was to show that sort of symptom it would have been then as the car copped a good shake over. But that day it too, it had all the power in the world. Might to more analyzing over the weekend, and play with the boost control for the 389284th time, just in case it is something like that.
It's not limp mode is it?
Then thing with electrics is when they get hot they sometimes make a good connection till they get cold again, same as when a globe blows and you tap the lens and it works again untill you turn the light off and the filament breaks contact. The other problem is that you should have a fault code flash up if it was a sensor but i said to try another ecu ( don't go and buy 1 see if we can find another to borrow) in case there is a fault with it for some reason and thats causing all the dramas.
If all the sensors, wiring and all the other electrical components are ok the only other things left are the injector pump, injectors and turbo i would think
Will try that again mate. At the moment It maxes boost around 2000-2500 revs, not sure if that is too slow or too fast.
Nah definitely not limp mode. When she is in slug mode, the power loss is there way before boost even hits 12-14. Also releasing and re-applying throttle makes no difference.
As far as codes and lights, nothing comes up, as I constantly monitor it on scangauge. The only code there is the EGR code (blocked). And also no lights.
Once again, if it is a mechanical issue, such as the pump, injectors and/or the turbo, it's still very bizzare, why sometimes it gives me all the power in the world.
Over the next few days, I'm gunna drive my Patrol over 700km - on the bitumen - again!! lol
Time to hit the big smoke for some RnR.
