Yeah I've got these engine mounts and the vibration at idle is pretty bad. I should have just done it on the one side.

Yes, I was warned about the Superior mounts by a friend in WA who did the same TB45 Ti auto to TD42 auto conversion. He says he even has his sunroof frame that vibrates when he selects Drive.
I retained the little shock absorbers that the TB45s have on their engine mounts for the TD engine hoping it would help smooth things.
I'll see if I can learn to live with it..
Apologies for the hijack, Hodge
Thanks a lot guys. All awesome advice.
I have changed oil heaps of times before , so i know the basics. just the first time on the 4.2 so, all tips and tricks are welcome as every car has its own hurdles . . .

I cover the oil filters with a plastic shopping bag which stops the oil pouring out and making a mess
mine is a bit like this.

Which way does the washer go. Plug through the flat side first or the flat side up against the sump ??

Have a look here. Is that what you've got?
...
That's it mate. You legend. Flat side against the sump.
Cheers.
Didn't get to do it today either. Next weekend it is. Spewing.
Sure mate. I'll take some snaps when I get home later.

Cheers mate, also meant to ask what was the outcome of the noise level you were concerned about? I listened to the video you posted and it sounds very close to the noise level I have which I find annoying.
I know part of my problem is that I'm coming from a super quiet and very smooth TB45E.. :)
I have had a few people tell me it is normal including some fairly knowledgeable blokes in this thread. Well when I say normal I mean it's very common be it normal or not. I got told by my mechanic to see how it goes after an oil change.

I think I'd just like mine to be a little bit less "normal" :)
I think you guys need to drive a clunky old 60's land rover for a couple of weeks then get back in your cars.... if you dont like it after that buy a hybrid.....lol
Sure, but I'm coming from the other end of the spectrum where I was driving a super quiet, super smooth TB45E.
I'm learning to live with the vibration but the clackety clack is a bit annoying. Nissannewby (Mat) came by on the weekend with his TD42Ti ute and it doesn't clack anywhere near as loud as mine so there are some engines that don't do it..
Tbh I don't give a rats behind how it sounds like, I'm just learning what's a normal and what's a bad sound on a td42. Proactive rather then reactive .

OOI what revs are these 4.2 TD GU's pulling at 100 kph, ??
Hey mate, just got my 2006 4.2 with 90,000 ks back from the mechanics, got him to check the valve clearances only and some far there is no sound what so ever.
3 of the valves needed a slight adjustment......not saying that it will fix yours as it may be something else, letting you know anyway
Straight through section on. Now it sounds like a 4.2 ...

Good to hear yours is quiet now. I am pretty confident that mine is the plunger mechanism on the pump. Was just with Mudski before and his sounded quiet just like mine before his amplified greatly. I think my valves are overdue to be adjusted anyway so, I guess it'll all narrow it down sooner or later.
New straight through pipe sounds awesome! I can't get any unpleasant drone or noise inside the cab, but early days yet... And I have gained a little bit of up and go as well which is a bonus.
Oil, filters and fuel filter change finally done. Massive thanks to Bloodyaussie for coming around and observing the amateur. haha
And for driving off to grab a proper sump washer, after I realized they had given me the wrong one, after I squashed it and realized i the end it was too big. Big cheers mate !!!
Now I see what people mean when they talk about the mess when taking the oil filters off... It makes a c$%^ of a mess....
I'l be getting one of them trays like Ben-e-boy has for sure after this!
A little while ago , Jonothan mentioned when he had the straight through pipe on the car, his gear rollover noise wasn't as bad. Happy to report that he was on the money !!!
I've only just realized that today that it's virtually gone, unless I'm really being lazy on the down-gearing... I did gain a bit of power with the pipe on, but how this has helped, I have no idea.
It is just as bad, only now you can't hear it over the exhaust or are distracted by the lovely exhaust note and don't notice it...
Probably both! And yeah I cannot stop listening to this thing wind up nowdays, both left passenger windows are always down now haha!
But seriously it has reduced. Maybe it's got that little bit more go and crossed that "noise" point a tad faster.... I don't know.
How much louder is it inside the car with the windows UP? Does it drone on the highway?
Honestly I have yet to hear any inside annoyance, in contrast to when I had the muffler on. I hardly ever have the radio on, so I would have noticed the extra sound with the straight through pipe on, that would bother me. And I'm on the freeway about 45 minutes worth every day sitting @ 100km/h average.
However that's just me. The wife is back from overseas in a bit, and as she will be the passenger, I'm keen to hear what she reckons, not that it'll make much difference haha.
Yes you can definitely hear it's a tad deeper and once it spools up you can hear that typical 4.2 "swirl" (pulled that one out of nowhere didn't i) sound. Also now you can definitely hear the turbo whistle that sweet tune... Love it!
Sounds like its a success then ( haha like that one..) I had a straight through on my Hilux (4 pot) and it was pretty loud and droned on the frewway. It didn't bother me and I got used to it, but my wife hated it and it gave her headaches (it was loud..) Interested to see how your wife reacts.

I dont like the look of the nut, spring and washer on the originaly tie down point. Need to use a ht washer or possibly a small insert for it.
Agree Ill make a 6mm plate for you to use if you can give me rough dimensions
I never got to look behind i thought it was a captive nut, no big deal .
I'll drop something off at TJM on Monday for you
