Yeah that is what the guys at the show were pointing me at. That style and size.
I was standing there ready to buy and this thread kept bouncing me on the head and I caught myself and left wanting good advice here.
There are knives ranging from $100 to $400 or more and the ones I wS looking at were around the $250 mark! Is that too much? I have no idea
You can get decent fixed blade knives for under $100 that will do the job just as good as a lot of $200-300 knives.
Really need to try a few out to hold and see how they feel for size etc at the shops.
KaBar make good knives and can be pricey but keep an eye on Fleabay and you can get them a lot cheaper than a lot of stores.
The Browning skinner that TD and I have, set me back $13 total and is a great skinner.
Dean at Extreme SAS (sport and survival) in QLD, has great deals on knives that come up regularly covering many well known brands.
Some of the knives I have managed to score on FleaBay have ranged from as little as $3 and as much as $120.
Dont pay anymore that $80 - $90 for a KA-BAR. Local knive shops think they can up the price because it has usmc, us army or us navy embossed and stamped on it.
To be honest, I've done my best skinning with a $20 swiss army knife and surgical scalpel. Take my word and dont try with the KA-BAR, it can be done but its not pretty.
The other knife i have but yet to use is a Buck Vanguard which can be had for $100 - $140 depending on where you go.

TD and I snagged some Buck Vanguards for around $10 each on Fleabay, very good little knife.
Don't count out any of MTech knives, they are a great knife on a budget, very sturdy and can keep an edge well. Different variants may change this but on average they are a good knife for upto $50. They have a combo kit that has a fixed blade, folder and LED torch, all kept in 1 sheath that is pretty well made and gives you knives to choose from when needed.
Will try and take some pics of it tomorrow so you can have a look.
the Buck Vanguard comes in black or white steel
OD makes a great leather sheath to suit it as well
as the stock nylon one lets it down
$10 for a vanguard?
Does the synthetic handle and nylon sheath drive the price down?
My timber handle version comes with a leather sheath.
# MR Gerber do a great field dressing knife , I think George brought one
As for the $10 Vanguard it feels nice and weighty in the hand and holds an edge
thats all I want from my knives and I have heaps, probable the only one
I dis-like the most is the Elk ridge skinner pair , very light in the hand,
pic is on post 2086 the green handled pair
Gecko was talking abiut this Gerber Myth field dress kit, I liked it so I got it lol Attachment 56525
The general purpose knife has been thrashed and is all we use on scalping foxes and skinning rabbits and Matty likes is so much he got his own lol. I'm yet to use the skinner but I'll be getting onto some pigs in the near future so ill let you know how that goes.
Mate all you need is 3 knifes from my limited experience, that kit will process foxes, rabbits, pigs and deer but you'll need a quality hunting knife around 7 to 7.5" to throat/slaughter and hack what you need to. Attachment 56526 a testament ti Coldsteel and the quality of blades my leatherneck has quartered roughly 300kg worth of drumsticks and plus last weekend I used it to process a few lambs and hit the bone quite oftenly and it stayed sharp. Actually after the first outing with only the factory edge it made a few fan boys and was put on a couple of wishlists instantly haha
I also have the Anaconda field dress kit which works well and has a bone saw with as well.
Alitis has it pretty well that having just the 1 knife may limit you in what you need to do.
Am having issues loading pics at the moment but will keep trying to loadcup the MTech for you
All I have used in the past, to process all my animals is the old man's boning knife, an M16 bayonet and a fist. As long as your knives are sharp, good quality steel, you can pretty much use anything.
Alitis and OD have it right, in that you only need a few good functioning blades.... The rest is just because I can!
Keep an eye on Fleabay and you can get some cheap knives, some I have only paid 99c for a fixed blade.
Maybe try snag a couple of those and see what you think of them, you can always sell them off for more if you don't like them.
MR - will go through my sharpies and see what I can put in the Gecko's package for you
I have the Smith's version of the Lansky's kit and it is great, nice, clean and sharp. The Smith's kit is also cheaper than the Lansky's and I am yet to check but I believe the bench vice for it is compatible.
if you dont find a knife of your liking pop over and have a play with a few of mine if you want.
That way you can feel what they are like "in the hand".
Who knows I may have found my lost ones by then, GGRRrrrrrrrrrrrr lol
Didn't realise that you lived close to MR, good idea to check some out and get a better idea of what to look for
More I'm on MRs side of Melb.
I rate it highly, its great to use because its fool proof but apart from the normal bench stone its all I have really used. I first got the 3 stone kit but the 5 stone with the ultra fine is what I use constantly, actually I touch up my knifes every time I use them so they're razor sharp every time lol. The best big IMHO is the fact you don't take off alot of steel like the pull through sharpeners which usually wreck the edge by making it jagged.
When we go for a shot there's usually an intermission during the night where everyone wants to touch up their knifes haha
Id like to try a japanese whet stones but a bit too pricey for me ,
I have some Arkansas stone I use with great results
Some the Arkansas stones are really fine, I been meaning to add a Super sapphire stone to my kit just to get then that little bit more polished/sharper. The best part of the Lansky is the fact the rod system helps you stay aligned and although a round edge is stronger the flat edge is easy to maintain and anyone can touch it up and keep your angle
I brought a small JADE sharpening stone that is awesome to just finish up.
but like OD I have a Strop which removes the very fine burr on the edge and polishes it a tad
How would they go with a curved knife?
Attachment 56576
Ill stick to the diamond wand.
10 points to the first person to tell me what the above knife is for.
Is that like a farriers blade or wood carving spoon knife?
TBH I have never tried on a blade with a curve like that, would have to make sure that you are more careful not to over sharpen and get flat spots in the blade.
#OD these look cheap enough, for knife or leather work

Maybe Growler can finish his Bowie with a few lol
That is a great price for those screws
I know I will be in strife but I bit the bullet and treated myself tonight to 2 new blades after having my scans and impersonating a human pin cushion today.
Scored 2 Schrade folders, a bear paw and a buzz saw trapper for $100 delivered.

Very nice mate.
So how ya feeling?? I'm guessing that's why your still up??
thats the down side to all the tests, but hopefully
it will show something that they can work with
Pain is slowly easing up which is nice, hoping it will be easier tomorrow. Whole left side of my back and ribs are swollen like a balloon at the moment making it hard to get comfortable.
1st time I have ever been told to keep my caffeine intake up to help seal the disc punctures and to get rid of the iodine product out of the discs
