Car Insurance

Just going through this process today.

With those that chose 'normal' insurance policies (not 4WD specific) does this also cover you for any off-road activities? i.e. high tide swept your baby away on the beach, that river crossing was a bit deeper than the path you walked, you played roll down the hillside, a croc stole your Patrol up the cape.....

NRMA have worked out cheapest for me at $463/yr for $16K agreed (but not the biggest NRMA fan). AAMI 2nd at $564 (or $662 at $18K agreed). Coles was actually the dearest at $1000

Oh also tried Allianz, given the vehicle is over 10 years (GUII) they can only do market value. I asked if they can tell me what that is, he did say around the price I paid, but based on condition of car when assessor sees it. Given others have this around $12K - I wasn't keen on market value given all the extras, new motor in it etc.

So went with AAMI at $18K agreed. They said 4X4 is covered on legal roads, tracks, beaches etc where 4x4 is permitted. Will have to read the PDS to confirm and can always change during the cooling off period.

I've just renewed mine with AAMI, $609/year $400 excess insured for $41000. 2009 ST with a couple of extras.

Love how they charge a similar amount yet yours is valued at $23K more.

I'm with Shannon's. Top $ agreed value on my GQ (and it's a petrol too) and I'm paying about $770 per annum.
Will recover from any gazetted road or track.
Very happy with them.

I have spoken with Shannon's twice and they were not interested in insuring my 4wd, that was before I had told them I was 21 too.
They said it's not really their thing and I should look for a 4wd insurer.

That's right, I do remember you saying that before, now you mention it.....
So odd. They have been really accommodating for me. I know a number of other guys from one of the FB groups also use Shannon's after this subject was discussed over there.

mate I just typed in my car details and got quoted 1100 and 600 excess for cover on the wifes 2010 gu7 and only insured for 39 200

That's bullshit mate especially where you live I reckon the risk of theft or damage would be heaps higher in Perth than pemberton. Give them a call and talk to someone, I've found you can get a heaps better deal if you speak to someone rather than online. I've got house and contents and another car with them so maybe that helps get the price down.

Well I'm a happy camper, just swapped to RACV last month and only $628.60 for 12 months with $60,000 agreed value, $625 excess.
I'm rating 1 and do get a multi-policy discount and the claims I made in the last 12mths didn't effect my rating as it was with a different insurer.
Also covered Australia wide.

Sometimes it pays to be one of those old baby boomer pricks.

I am with Allianz as well and no problems so far, but not had a claim either

I am now with Shannons.
All they ask is to prove you are a 'motoring enthusiast'.( I insured my other car with them as proof) Had a claim 2 weeks after joining, when Katrol slipped, no dramas at all. Agreed value and $550 excess.

I just swapped from suncorp to dodo and saved $130 off the yearly premium.

Just got my renewal from AAMI, last year they insured it for 43k, this year they want to insure it for 33k. Looks like its time to start looking around.. theres no way I can replace it for 33k with all the extras.

Ive ensured my GU with Shannons that were very competitive on price and they will do agreed value

I used DGA insurance brokers. Fully insured on and off road. I am in NSW but they are in Vic.

My 2004 STL with all the goodies costs $750 for $35k agreed value in nz.
I was pleasantly suprised.

Hey NewDan - we're with AAMI too ... try giving them a buzz, they will adjust the agreed value, and sometimes it isn't too much extra for that!
Also is there anyone else on the policy. Hubby is main driver, and I was a named driver (but rarely drive it). Removed me as a named driver and saved $30 a month!! And i confirmed that occasional drivers dont need to be listed (drive it less than once a fortnight, plus trips away).
Also, with AAMI, every insurance renewal, I call them about it, and they drop the price every time! I just ask them why it's gone up and if there is anything they can do to reduce it.

The Chaser did a great "The Checkout" special on insurance, you should see if you can find it and watch it.
In a nutshell, if you don't ask for a reduction on your premium, they will rip you off. That is their plan.

I got my troll for 650 through youi.

I have mine with Allianz. I am an insurance broker any we place nearly all of our sedans, wagons etc with them as they are by far the best we can deal with for claims service and handling on light vehicles i.e. anything under 2 tonne carry. With pricing you need to appreciate you could get 5 different quotes all underwritten by Allianz from different sources all of which have different price, excess, and policy coverage. Allianz online, via a broker, via a car dealer, via the bank etc

Other than NRMA you will need to list all accessories on the vehicle.

Those with Agreed Value be aware there are changes happening. The Agreed Value may not necessarily be what you get paid if written off. Some insurers are currently changing their definition of Agreed Value essentially providing Market Value. There is nothing wrong with Market Value as I have always insured this way.

A few Direct insurers are imposing high excesses to keep the premiums down as well as none of the benefits others provide such as Excess free Windscreen, Rating 1 protection, signwriting etc

Pretty sure Shannons won't insure business use vehicles.

At the end of the day there are only a handfull of Australian insurers left and the South African companies are desperately trying to obtain market share. IAG and Suncorp have the bulk of the Motor and Domestic insurance in Australia. Something like 80% from memory. Allianz and QBE are the 3rd and 4th largest insurers in Australia then Zurich come in a long way off at 5th (Zurich don't do personal motor only commercial).

We often have clients say I don't like this brand or that brand, what most don't realise is that it is most likely an IAG or Suncorp brand - and now A&G or Budget (both South African). Just look at their websites to see their brands.

On another note IAG and Suncorp won't be a part of the Comparison Websites which are huge in the UK. Budget operate one of the comarison websites in Australia and have been in trouble by ASIC for their advertising. How can you offer a Comparison Website when there are only 4 or so brands and they are all owned by the same company i.e. Budget?

Anyhow, that's my update on the insurance industry for you in a nutshell. At the end of the day like everything you get what you pay for.

If someone asks me for a discount on their car insurance I simply say no, try the direct insurers. There is no profit in car insurance at all whatsoever and hence the premiums keep going up and up. We try to do as little private car insurance as possible because there are just too many claims.

Having just dealt with QBE on the side of the road tonight after a reasonably major crash with the family on board.......they were effing useless and I wouldn't personally insure with them if I had the choice (it is a company vehicle with company chosen insurance).

Talk to shannons, ppl say they are more expensive but they're not really, others make you pay extra for extras ( lol) but you get it all with shannons, not extras just a part of the policy, they insured is always agreed, and it was easier for the guy to tell me what I was not covered for rather then what I am, being everything, included contents of car trailor and contents, didn't cover for driving in time attack, & or closed roads, that was about it, insured for $14700 and as for mods adds to value if legal, had a few cars with them never had a problem, oh and I think it's $900 & something a year and no extra for monthly etc, and I'm in no way have anything or work for or with them.

I have to disagree with you re Allianz, they are by far the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with and would never recommend them. I went with them even though they were over $100 dearer on the quote on the advise of my insurance broker. Reason was they offered complete new replacement for the first two years as my car was brand new. I had to list all my accessories etc.
All was good until I had an accident that wasn't my fault, you can read about it in one of the other posts. The other driver admitted liability in front of witnesses, nearly six months later he changes his mind and makes a claim against me. Cut a long story short Allianz threw me to the wolves and sided with him, this was my first claim in over 40 years of driving. No interest in the independent witnesses as they didn't actually 'see' the accident just heard him admit liability afterwards. They were complete idiots and couldn't even work out where Cape York was, said I should have called the Police. I wasn't expecting to hear from the other driver again as he admitted liability, also they couldn't fathom that there were no Police within 300km. They also told me it wasn't unusual to have claims come in 6 months later.
My insurance broker and I fought tooth and nail but Allianz said they would not cover my legal fees if I went to court. My damage was minimal to the back of my caravan, I ended up paying the excess as it was the cheapest option. The insurance ombudsman said I had a case but by this stage I was well and truly over it.
When my renewal came it went from $600odd to $2,400 - just to get rid of me.
Went back to my old insurer and still have agreed value of $60,000 for $600 odd, and they know I made the Allianz claim.

Also my insurance broker is also my son and has been in the industry for over 12 years so he had my best interests at heart.

You are absolutely correct. I have been with Shannons for a few months now, and were easy to deal with when I had a claim after only 2 months with them.

sorry to hear about that Apollofish, as you noted though paying the Excess is the only way if the other party disputes. If it does go further an your insurer wins then you are entitled to your excess back. However if the courts apportion the blame then no excess refund.

Sorry to hear Drewboyaus, glad everyone is okay. I had my previous car with QBE for a year, claimed a windscreen they tried to get me to pay my excess. I said no I had cover, they said no you don't, what the person on the other end didn't realise was I was the broker and logged directly into the claim from my end and can read everything they could. Don't you love arguing with someone when you are both reading the same thing? They eventually waived the excess. I try not to put car insurance with QBE.

I work for suncorp group as a liability. Recovery and settlement person I spend everyday speaking with other insurance companies and if I had to pick my top 3 worth companies youi would be first I would never insure with them as they have the highest rate if being issued legal proceedings against them and the court docs are served on the driver not the insurance company 2nd would be Qbe they are poorly trained and dont really undrrstand there own system. 3rd would be just car insurance (suncorp own this brand and yes I do work for them) there coverage is shit and there are so many loop holes for alot of basic stuff.

I've been with Allianz for 5-6 years and have had 2 claims and have had no issues at all.

I pay $1032 a year for An agreed value of 35k for with Allianz but have just completed a quote from real insurance for the same value but driven less K's

You need to be careful cause if you only have coverage for 8.
,000 km you cant increase it it you hit it in like 4 months after you reach the amount your cover is over and you need to start a new policy or they wont cover you

I just brought another car for the missus so this will be lucky to do 8000 but ill prob go to 10,000 just to be safe which only makes it around $620, still major difference from $1032
