here is your GT-R badge on a patrol, been on there for a long time, and from what i was told when i bought mine, it had an rb26dett in it at one stage. it now has a 6.2ltr v8 diesel in it though...... i may not go anywhere fast... but i go anywhere!!

i also used to play with an old r32 gt-r spent a lot of money on it after i brought it over from japan.... so many pics have been lost in later years but this is what it looked like when i paid for it... still sitting in japan at the time..

in the end it was a full turned new motor based on the 400R nismo production 3ltr stroker kit, but all made out of one piece, (read.. no spacers or sleaves) was running a titanium alloy block and head with all custom internals and a triple turbo set up. capable of running continuously at 60psi and valve bouncing at just on 11000rmp it was a real nice toy. it once registered 1019awhp ( mind it was a very cold day, and we were blowing an extraction fan out of a mobile snap freezer. ) standard road trim i managed a 10.8sec 1/4 mile and was removed from the track by officials for not having a chute and roll cage. that was the maiden voyage and the beginning of the end for my fun as it then became a daily and too many points were lost

nice R31, big ups on teh 3l stroker.

How do you think the RB26 would fair in the Patrol compared to a larger capacity n/a V8?

I've seen these types of threads before on different car forums and honestly, I'll believe it when I see some progress. What people don't tell you is that it's not just a case of swapping the motors, the trannies, the diffs if you're going for a strip and street car. Going to take quite a bit of money and dedication to do this. All the power to anyone who wants to do it, just don't get upset when the bill is getting to 15k, 20k, 25k. The kilowatt gains get lower and the price get's higher, lol.

And unless you plan reducing the weight of the car, you're going to need a lot of horsepower to push that big, heavy, un-aerodynamic 4WD down the strip super fast.

Being a WRX owner as well as a GU owner, I'm so feking excited. Love jap turbo. Being a ski-boat owner, love the 350 chev....I'm torn :(

I'm not going to race it down the strip, I just want a mad sounding town 4wd that I can hit the mud in to the sound of gate all day :P I think the rb26 is the maddest sounding 6 cyl to ever live... And the Patrol is a pretty tough looking 4wd IMO I don't think you could get a better mix of sound and looks from a 4wd... That I can afford :)

I have a rb26 sump that had been modded with a GQ sump so it fits over the chassis still and it also has a modded oil pick up from a rb26. I have a mate who done his own rb25 into a nissan navara ute, he also owns 2 r31 skyline 2 doors with rb25 and the other with a rb26 and a r34 4 door with a stock rb25... So he knows RB transplants and does all the wiring and custom fab work, so I'll be in good hands when it comes to the conversion. Oh and he also has contacts in J-Land who can get rb26 half cuts cheap.

cant remember to be honest, running a g-reddy 6 speed box with custom gears the speedo topped me out at 320 kph on the 90mile straight, nullarbor.

once i hit the 300 mark adrenelin was so high i couldnt slow down, until the rev limiter hit in 6th gear

I saw someone selling a shorty with a 454 chev in it a few months ago, i wonder if the 460 ford bb thats in my shed will fit in my gq?
I am interested to see how it goes as well, i am a fan of v8's in trolls beacuse of the low down torque and driveablility, RB26 is a nice motor but how will it go off road?

Certainly would there are blokes getting around with 582 blown v8's in patrols so imagine the 460 would go in and would sound pretty tough. I think with the rb26 you would gain good benefits in stroking it to a 3 litre

It would be interested to see how it goes. old mate (from what I can gather) plays in the mud so high rpm/big power might work well. unsure how that motor will perform when crawling
I do agree with nissannewby about stroking it out. patrols are big my logic says it need some cubic inches to be great.

I know the RB26 head on the RB30 bottom end is a very popular combination amongst the turbo rice burner scene, i have seen these combos get 700+ horses at the wheels in dyno comps.

There is no substitute for cubic inches!

yeah a mate has one with a rb25 head. the motor is built for 600+ hp but its a daily driver (sometimes by his mum) so its tune to a very streetable 350hp IMO its is a very well set up and reliable combo and definatly

Stroked would certainly help with low down torque the stroked or RB26/30 combo's push big numbers because they are matted to huge turbos and make that power at 6000+rpm. Also, we are talking bulk money.

Granted there are not a lot of RB26's shoved into patrols and it would be rare. But it's also a downside cause unlike most popular V8's from 5l to Ls1 and 2's they have been done enough that the R&D, kits and experience is already out there. I certainly wouldn't want a workshop 'giving it a go' if they hadn't done it successfully before.

If you are are going to stoke the RB26, you should just get a 4.8l put forged internals in it and wack on a turbo, it will make more power in the usuable rev range and will be MUCH cheaper. Otherwise for the money you will spend you can get a LS2 create motor, stoke it to 6.7 then put a charger or turbo on it and destroy all - this is the kind of money you are looking at with make big reliable pwoer from the RB26. They are highly strung engines. A patrol with an RB26 does not a GTR make.

I'm going to be keeping the rb26 twin turbo with stock turbo's or slightly bigger turbo's. doing everything I can for response like short as cooler piping most likely water cooled, tuned exhaust manifold, external gated turbos, twin filters and a custom 3" or 4" snorkel, along with a well tuned ECU. The Patrol is currently getting Low ratio diff gears installed along with a front locker. It is usually used in mud so I reckon it will be in 3rd gear and on the limiter a fair bit. I reckon it's going to be ok for what I want it for.

Just a bit of an update:
Over the last 5-6 weeks the Patrol has been in getting new low ratio diffs and a mechanical front locker put in, Yes I said 5-6 weeks... :( It's been one hold up after another, first it was that the locker hadn't turned up but the rear was good to go as the new Ring and Pinion gears had turned up, so they went in and the LSD re-shimmed. while we were waiting for the supposed Next day shipping of the front locker they got started on pulling the front end apart, new bearings, Swivel Hub rebuild kit, and maybe some other bits and pieces were ordered. Now here is where the fun begins... What we weren't told was that the locker was on back order from America! and it didn't show up for another 4 weeks :( Then they decided to pull the front apart and put everything together just to find out that the bearings weren't the right ones. New ones were ordered for next day delivery but didn't show up on time either. Then they found out that because I'm changing the gear ratio, the front shims didn't fit and they needed machining to fit. So the Patrol has been in the shop for over 5 weeks now and it's still not finished. It's been very hard to not go off my head at my mechanic for not checking all this crap and waiting 4 weeks to start on the front only to find out the wrong parts had showed up... I just hope that after all this stuffing around that it works and the ratios aren't too low for HWY use. Rant over!

Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races [Carrol Shelby] IMO I'd want buckets of torque for off road, as above don't need horsepower in the slow Stuff. 2 4x4 I know with 4.8 turbo pull 14 sec qtr mile times and have 335 kw at the rear wheels. Ants dual cab GQ has 454 efi

Hey matt, have a look at my members ride thread regarding waiting times.... It's a pain in the @rse. Mines been off the road for over 3 months in the last year, all looking for a an auto fault. Spent thousands, had months without it and it's all just to get it to normal not even to make it better! Aarrrgh! I feel your pain. Yeah Lucas, it's getting a bit silly now. The way I see it about the RB26DETT upgrade is the factory TB42c goes alright and can't be putting out any massive numbers, It seems to manage pulling the Patrol with what little power it has and the RB26 must put out better numbers from factory, so I can't see how it's going to be any worse than what's in it now.

Okay, so here is the comparison of a TB42E and the RB26DETT. My motor is the TB42c which I couldn't find a power figure on, the TB42E would be making more power than my tired old Carbi clunker. When I get it back from getting the diffs built I will put it on a dyno and see just how little power it is making, I know that the heavy 35" tyres wont help the figures but it will be good to see just what I'm playing with.

As you can see the TB42 makes (128.7 kW; 172.6 bhp) @ 4200 rpm, (320 N·m; 236 lb·ft) @ 3200 rpm and the RB26 makes 280 hp (206 kW) @ 6800 rpm and 260 lb·ft (353 Nm) @ 4400 rpm. I know the RB makes it's power at a higher RPM but I don't think it will be an issue considering the TB42 redlines at at 6000 rpm and I do spend a bit of time on the limiter :).

Sounds to me like you need to learn how to change gears lol.
Why would you spend a lot of time on the rev limit when you can feel the power drop off way before the rev limiter ?
Or even better buy an auto.

Sorry, should have said in the mud i spend a bit of time on the limiter. not like i just drive down the road in second gear or anything.

Seems a lot of people keep saying that torque is better than power for 4wding but those figures show that the RD26DETT has more power AND torque (albeit at a higher rpm). So i say GO FOR IT man!! Cant wait to see the mudslvt out on the tracks:)

It is interesting though if you look at these huge horsepower monster trucks in the mud they are pretty useless all cammed up for high rpm power as soon as the power hits they bog down and sink in the mud.

yeah Lucas, loving the haters HAHAHA. The patrol has 250,xxx km's from memory, bit hard to remember seeing as I haven't sat in it for nearly 6 weeks. I'm keen to do it, I've never been much of a sheep and did what everyone else has done. you never know, it might just be a weapon! And in the end if it sucks i'll just pull it out and put it in a $3,000 silvia and sell it for $10,000 and put the 10 grand into something sheepish to power the patrol :(

Ok from what i have seen in seriously big mud holes the opposite occurs high power at high rpm makes them bog down dig into the mud further and that's when they get stuck.
High speed entry into the mud works for me though the momentum helps lol.

Seems you have your goal set on the RB26. Don't be too quick to believe what wiki or some 'review' website tells you. The RB26 will not make decent (READ inexcess of 300kw @ the wheels) relaible power stock day in day out the way you and it shoudl be driven, and that is hard!

First the cercamic turbo's will fail due to heat at high boost and you wont get a lazy excess of 300kw @ the wheels without a cam, larger injectors, turbo upgrade and some forgie's for safe keeping and of course a decent ecu, hopefully one that goes mafless and a good tune. RB26's have the capacity to make crazy bullshit power for such a small capacity motor. But you just ain't gunna keep it for long unless you build it right the first time, or drive it like a pussy, and you ain't gunna do that.

You will find by just turning up the wick (boost) will net you easy gains in HP but you only need look at a RB26 the wrong way and not have something done correctly and it can and will cost you big $$$.

How much confidence do you have in your mecho? How many RB26’s they worked on? Don’t let them tell you “it’s just an engine, same as any other engine”. It ain’t and there are some specific tings that you either just know or you don’t when working on them. I used to drive nearly 4hrs to a one of the tops workshops in Sydney (Silverwater Automotive) to get my GTR worked on and motor rebuilt. One rebuild was simply because another workshop didn’t put together the harmonic balance assembly correctly and the keyway thrashed out.

Don’t get me wrong I am not a hater but don’t be too swayed by what you read on the net about the RB26 pumping out big power out of the box. Stock GTR's RB26' are not particularly fast or awesinspiring. Also, I thought TAS didn’t have PULP, or at least that’s what some of us mainlanders have been told? The RB26 only runs on PULP.

Don’t bother too much with the larger turbo’s if you after response. Nissan didn’t pour huge amounts of money into R&D to cock up on turbo’s. They are well mated to the engine for response and minimum turbo lag. Go bigger if you intended upgrading other go fast bits too otherwise they won’t produce significantly more power over stock for the price.

Cooler piping – keep it down sure, keep the bar and plate stock cooler too, you don’t need bigger for you application it may just end in lag. GTR’s have the best stock cooler by far. No idea for a air-to-water cooler thou. Just another expense possible for not much gain. Also then no one will see your stonking great front mount if you just have some pissy under the bonnet air-to-water unit.

Exh Mani – HKS make a tops one, stainless with a separate pipe for the wastsegate. Which brings me to my next point don’t waste your money on an external gate (you don’t need new turbo’s) and you certainly don’t need external gates, they will grant you no power gains for your application, only some wank factor when you pop the hood or drive on the limittah. Plus their illegal because they vent exhaust gasses to the atmosphere

Twin filters, sure I guess, but try loose the twin MAF’s and perhaps streamline it, let it suck as much air as possible. You could loose power in air restrictions here, more than you would gain with some of your other proposed mods. If you don;t loose the MAF get the 300zx 70mm MAF X2.

ECU – I’d go a MOTEC.

Now go forth and build this monster….

Monster Hp Is N1 block , Big $$$ crank and so on, so go easy.
No extreme hp engine is stock block, the N1 block new still available ex Japan and local.
Frankly The last guy Dune is giving you alot of good advise so take it on board.
No one here is as keen as me to see you finished, grinning from ear to ear as me, as I drive both these you intend to Hybrid GQ & R32GTR.
I sped read thread so bear with me.
I hope you remembered good sump baffles RB26 have a habit of losing oil pressure and there goes all your $$ in 1 bang.
N1 turbos or similar is the go for 300 kW, water and oil cooling is needed also.
Do not use standard ceramic turbos, as Dune pointed out, this will only end in tears if you do, guaranteed.
remote filter & oil cooler will help cooling and added capacity.
Low speed and High revs will need good air flow so extra cooling will be required also, guaranteed.
The list is endless so I'm stopping here.
Frankly I've pondered this myself.
Recon RB has pretty good low torque considering size R32 =1500kg and gearing of gtr.
dont forget gtr good for over 250kph so gear that down to low gq ratios and F###@@#@
low down gearing to spin up turbos you should be busy and changing gears alot.
