Sounds like you've possibly got to many items in your windows start up menu which you'll need to remove, I can't remember how to remove them right now. I'll have a look in a bit but I'm just changing the coolant expansion bottle right now.

I'm with Clunk on this one. Sounds like it's loading a whole lot of bloatware on start-up.
Lucas. If you press Windows key + R. A run program dialogue will pop up. In there type in "msconfig", without the marks. A menu will pop up. There will be tabs on top. One of the tabs is labelled Start-up. How many items approx, do you have in there? Or if you're keen, screen shot it and post it here, I'll could briefly run ya through, which ones aren't important, and you can untick them for a faster start-up.
Cheers hodge, I'll try that in a minute. Just backing up some photos etc now.
I just figured out the slower your computer runs, the more beer you drink.........
Nah, I just forgot to put the smily face at the end:-) lol
thats the one, thanks Hodge, i only did mine last week but for the life of me couldnt remember "msconfig"
You'll probably have quite a few in there that you wont need mate. I had absolutely bucket loads but once unticked, starts up so much quicker...... almost new bud lol
Start up may be a little quicker but probably not lol. I think it's just slowed down in general:-(.
I'm still getting the shockwave error when trying to get on YouTube. It's basically stopping YouTube from working at all.
I loaded the new shockwave, have the latest fireFox, been restarted a few times this arvo but still no change:-(
anyone know how to update php coding?
Back it all up and format it... If that fails chuck it out the window!

Ok my laptop is even worse today. It's going so slow I can't do anything.
It won't even play a video clip off my hard drive. It's mentioned that there's a problem with a plugin.
With nothing open the task manager says there's 90 processes running! Wtf? That's heaps right!?
Sorry I haven't been reporting back here lucas, been away from home since my last post.
Sounds like something is bottlenecking the PC. As per Clunk's comment I really hope you are not running anything norton, as more often than not, it is the culprit. Once it get a hold of your system, it spreads it's roots everywhere and it's game over.
If you're running Windows 7, then microsoft security essentials is the best thing out there at the moment, and it's FREE.

How old is the laptop by the way ?? There could be a mirriad of issues at hand. Corrupt drive sectors, hard drive fatigue (age) just to name a few...
Oh sh1t!!! HELP!!!
I accidentally clicked "end process" for explorer thinking it was the browser but its the thing that runs all the icons and start bar so now I don't even have the start menu!!!
How do I get it back!?
Is it just too full?
Taslucas Have you stopped all the service's from startup. Run msconfig go to start up tab, click hide windows services, I will give you a list of crap you can turn off with out windblows having to much of a cry. Also would download a Linux live CD and do a memory test on your ram. When laptops get old and have been hot the first things Togo are the ram and HDD.
I doubt it's because of it's capacity used mate. As spooner said, HD and ram in laptops go quicker after a while due to heat build up inside a cramped enclosure. However it's 3 years old.
Let me look up HP laptops and see what key you press to get into SafeMode on start-up. It's either F8 or F9.
Is it just a coincidence that its slowed down and also the flash player plugin has crapped out at the same time?
I still can't get it to play a video either from the net or from my hard drive. It takes forever then tells me shockwave has crashed or is unresponsive. I've updated Adobe flash player, shockwave flash player, tried to update the video card drivers but they're already up to date.
This is doing my head in!
Just managed to watch a YouTube clip with no flash player crash but it took ages to load. (not buffering, the internet is quick, it's the computer that's lagging really bad).
Once it finally started playing it was fine so maybe I'm getting somewhere?
Oops spoke too soon.
Try to play a clip and it basically freezes the computer. Can't even close the browser till it has a think for a minute
Hmmm to me all of this smells like corruption somewhere on the hard drive, preventing updating a specific area even if you run the drive update function.
Mate at this stage, honestly I suggest ( if it even lets you ) to back everything up in case it worsesn. And run the recovery tool to bring it back to factory condition.
During my IT years your case we used to call the snowball effect, where you digging and attempting to fix a bugging issue, may open up many more cans of worms and stuff up things which were fine.
Yeah I keep everything backed up already.
I haven't really messed with anything only updated adobe flash player and shockwave.
And just allowed an automatic Microsoft update thing
If you've backed everything up, then I would either format the drive and fresh install, oh and also partition the drive, so you keep windows on one part and every hung else on the other........ Or better would be to get a new drive and fresh install.
Buy a Mac, you wouldn't have these issues *LMAO*
Peace out
Why waste your money on a Intel PC with OSX, format and install linux, problem fixed :-)
To be honest, I'm not real keen on doing much to it myself as I have no idea what I'm doing and it'll probably end up worse lol.
How is the best way to find out if it's running too many processes in the background? As I mentioned earlier it's running 90 processes with nothing open. Would this be causing it to go slow?
I'm not real keen on trying to partition etc etc. Im scared enough just trying to attempt a fresh install. Ive backed up all my pics and vids, is there anything else I should back up like passwords etc?
I used Team Viewer to support my Customers which is just like being in front of their Computer.
It is free for personal use
If Lucas is happy to let Rusty Nail access to his Computer he could do a full restore for Lucas
Needs to be installed on both Computers
http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx
Just realised that it might not work for a reinstall of a Operating System as teamviewer would be uninstalled in the process
team viewer is a great program bob, however it is not suitable for this application, it needs to be run from within windows and to fix lucas's problems he would need to reinstall windows fully not just a restore. the best i can offer is to talk him through it over the phone. its really straight forward, and once you take care of the begining the computer will do it all itself.
