The fun begins ! ! . . .
Picked up the new cab from Patrolapart this morning. Looks great the floor is gleaming inside and the whole thing is very clean & rust free, they said they shouldn't have wrecked it cos it was too nice. Anyway is gone to a good home now, think i did well. . . . ☺

Thanks MB for the block & tackle and casters, it's now safely off the trailer on its stand. The garage roof didn't fall down which is a bonus. Frame thingy works well, can push it around the garage nicely. . .
Old GQ is sitting outside in the pissing rain, it can rust away all it likes now Bwahahaha. . .

Cheers markie, yeah did think about those bugles they probly should be right but I'll chuck sum bolts through for peace of mind! ! Yeah hopefully truck turns out nice, looking forward to a gleaming fresh engine bay. Started striping a bit in the engine bay 2night, was heaps of fun chopping away. . . Will take a bit longer putting it back together me thinks. . .

Nah wanted to get as little as I needed really using averything of the old 1. It was still on the chassis when i went to pick it up, asked for just a shell but they left it on to make it easier to move. Anyway me & shorty pulled it off in bout 20 mins and put just the shell in the trailer. Want to avoid my place looking like a junk yard as much as possible ! . .

Hey I was reading a thing about sound deadening too, seems that this is the stuff that people are using these days, this is the best stuff to use and cheapest. Exact same stuff as dynamat apparently and half the price. "pingjing" they call it. I'd love to do it to mine one day.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/122293309778

A bit more work on the cab last night. Pretty much striped down to a shell apart from head lining which I'll leave and a few more fittings to go. Probably take the windscreen out too sometime.
The more i delve into this the more i realize what a mint body this is, scored well i reckon. . . And how how much s#!t there is to put back together. Arrrgh!
Found a resident spider too. . . Glad i found him now rather than driving down the road 😕 . . . Yeah thought of that. Mine is cracked just a little (old one) and this one is perfect - didn't have a second battery. Good idea i think just need to work out how to do it best. . .
Also got some bracing plates coming from BigO 4x4 Adelade to brace the front quarter clips as these are prone to cracking too. . . They should arrive soon hopefully, keen to have a look at them. . .

Rossco
10th May 2017, 12:46 PM
Yeah definatly, everywhere. Winnie found that Jing Jang stuff which looks good and cheaper than dynamat.
The carpet underlay type stuff on the firewall in this cab had a hard moulded layer but was hard & perished so had to destroy it to get out. Looks like the stuff in the silver one is ok tho so will use that too. Doesn't have the hard layer just a vinyl type backing. . .
Sent from my GT-I9506 using Tapatalk
Winnie
10th May 2017, 01:01 PM
Yeah that hard layer of crap is rubbish. I've never seen one that's not all cracked. I would use the Ping Jing on the firewall too and inside the doors.
Are you taking any time off work for this project?
Rossco
10th May 2017, 05:30 PM

You need to make up one of those body stands where you can roll the entire body over and work on the underside, from the top. :) I bet you'd take a lot longer preping the body if you had one of those. You'd be looking at every square inch of the under side and looking at what you can do.

Rossco mate, just a thought it might be best to only weld 1" , then space, then 1" for flex stress. Consult an engineer or maybe some info or more knowledgeable blokes on here could add to this theory mate!

Made some more good progress in the shed. Quarter chop finished, bogged, sanded & primed, put some seam sealer on the inside too & painted. Fixed a couple of tiny dings the rest is pretty perfect.
Trimmed the rear guards a little. Was easier than i thought really, I've usually just bashed them back a little hack style, but did it a bit more properly this time.
Marked out new fold line, bent out old tab, flattened with some vice grips then marked cut line, cut, bent new crease slowly slowly then kinda bashed it square - came up pretty good. Just did the rear of the guards, looks like there's 15-20ml to be made at the front from trimming the plastic trim thingy so will just do that.

Hey markie forgot too add panel beater came round the other night to look @ it, reckoned weld whole seem would be the go. Told us to rub the whole thing back with 800 wet & dry and use scotch brite in the pokey bits to make it dull before paint. Should be ready for panting in a few days I reckon, hopefully they can sqeeze it in soon.
Also droped into roadrunner and picked up some new door rubbers, bailey channel and one of their diff / gearbox breather kits. . .

Rossco, are these braces installed to correct a weakness in the front guards or more a belts and braces approach since you had the guards off? If its a weakness, where does the vehicle crack and for what reason - is it hard driving or twisting or currugations etc?

Hey Phil, their made to correct a couple of weak spots really. Apparently they can come apart from the spot welds between the bottom of the A pillar and the front guard where they join. The long ones are to help with where they crack from the weight of the batteries, especially the aux side. Yeah my panel beater mate said GQs are weak as piss in that area. I think a combination of corrugations, hard hits and maybe older bodies & corrosion takes its toll. The guy that developed them is in SA (Pinaroo) and does a fair bit of outback touring so i guess corrugations would be a big one, they certainly seem to destroy a lot of things. . .

Yeah was a bit worried about hole for snorkel but don't think I am 2 much now ? Hmm . . Only because im going through near firewall & battery, haven't had an issue with the 3 " but 4" is a bit more chopping away. Very glad i found this kit tho there's a fair bit more support in this area now. The other option is through bonnet but not sure if I like the look, and also don't think you can retain the battery.

Andy, take a 6mm drillbit and drill a hole at the end of each of the cracks. This will stop the crack extending any further - it distributes the 'tear stress' around the circumference of the 6mm hole. From there I would make a rectangular splice plate and if you can only get to one side of the skin, drill and rivet it thru the two outer zones of the bodywork and also the torn flap. If you can get to both sides of the torn area, match drill two plates and drill and sandwich both the assy together. Keep your match drilled holes 'neat' with the bolts, say use M8 bolts and 8.5mm dia holes. I would use 4 bolts on the torn sections at both ends and 2 bolts on the flap section, so 10 holes in total. Its going to be a mission, but the tearing will then stop. You might need something like 40mm flat bar or whatever the flat zone is left for you to clamp thru, does not have to be thick, say 3mm would suffice and clamp if up tight. Stagger the holes on the end sections so they are not working thru the same line of action - helps with stress distribution.

Well the new body is ready for paint - YAY ☺ ! ! Looks like hopefully next week it can be done.
Ping Jing has been installed in the cab too, hopefully she's gonna be nice & sooth once all done. Can notice the difference, have done one quarter panel and ran out on the other, but if you tap the outside of both there is a very noticeable difference. Without sounds really tinnie and with it has a very nice dull thud to it. Just a word of warning to anyone putting this stuff in the foil backing is thicker than you think and once a few beers were down and all excited ended up cutting the bejesus out of me hands before i noticed 😕. .

Well in a world of wiring at the mo. Getting there but just wondering what the best way too get the main loom out is. Assuming feed everything from the engine bay through to the cab as the fuse box looks tricky to pluck apart and won't fit through the big gromet. Looks like you need to unplug the fusable links near the battery & relays under that plate thingy. Keep plugging away tommoz but if anyone has done it before matfew or any advice would be greatly appreciated . .[emoji4]

Just bought a new (second hand ebay) ARB bar as mine is bent boyond redemption and i hate it. Do like the ARB bars tho despite the weight. Hope it's good might grab it in the week, it's to suit a 1" body lift too which is a bonus will just need a bit of tweaking to get the high mount in. .

A bit more shop'n today. Got sum new weather strips for the doors (the inner & outer bits that the windows slide through), ordered a bonnet sound dampner thingy and an aftermarket glow plug timer. .
Timer looks really good, keen to see how it works but hopefully helps with cold starts as mine is a bit different with the 12mm. Has an after glow which pulses for 2 sec on off for as long as you as you set it. Also doesn't glow at all if you just crank it which is nice i reckon, and hooks up to the factory dash lamp so will look like factory now ☺

Yeah i know, although other people say otherwise. AB's is perfect, pretty sure Winnies is too same as with Mudskis. Was thinking compression might be getting low and the cause but wasn't too bad around 380 to 400, was kinda better than i expected really. What about glow plugs can you tell from a visual inspection or best to test these to see if they're up to scratch?
Usually cold starts aren't terrible it starts pretty much straight away and is a bit rough & white smokey but have had it stall on a couple is occasions which is not cool, never did that with the old pump. Only randomly and very occasionally tho. . . Medium hot starts (10 mins + after running) can take a bit of cranking sometimes and glowing it seems to help whereas I never used to glow it at all once hot with the old pump and it fired straight up. Not sure if this had improved since i first got the pump or just managing it better / getting used to it. .

No mine starts easy now. Before the new pump it was a bastard because it had an air leak.
I wait until I hear the glow relay click off when it's cold though which is about 5 seconds after the glow light turns off.

Your issues all sound pump related mate. Glow plugs are easy to check. Use a multimeter and check their resistance. And visually as long as they look good and not deformed or melted.
You need to take it back again then if you cant afford one of the ones I get. Easy now that the patrol is off the toad.

Cheers Matty, I'll have a think, can you send us the price just out of interest sake. Also what should the resistance be without having to look it up. Visually when we did the comp test they looked fine.
Might have to see how costs go with this thing, just a shame I've sunk a few $ into this pump so far, not sure what I could recoup from it. Wouldn't want to try sell something that isn't quite right to some poor bugger. . . Maybe I try getting Andy to give it one more tweak, just ran out of time & motivation last time. What are your thoughts on compression, would you expect cold starts to be reasonable with those kinds of figures?

I would have to look as well mate. It might be 1 ohm but I would need to check to be sure. You can throw power on where the bus bar connects and touch the thread to an earth and if heats up real quick then it is likely ok.
You could get around $1000 for your pump and mention that it may require a rebuild. The compression is fine and yes cold starts would be fine at those figures. You are well within the specs. What gives it away as a pump issue is your issue starting when warm. You should not have to glow it once the temp gauge is showing the system has started warming up.

Yeah its not shocking but doesn't seem perfect either. Can't remember what Andy said last time kind of had enough but that stage. It's not that bad so when you test it in the shop it seems pretty good. I'll take it back again, just can be a pain beteen work and what not. Yeah it's a fair bit of dough down the drain to get another one. Bad timing, a couple of months later could have got onto one of Mattys. I'd be wary of galvanic corrosion with alloy blocks Rossco. No expert but I'd either go poly or only use the alloy with separators between the body/chassis and the block.

Yeah would rather poly in black if i can find some. For this reason plus, they would look the least obvious and not sure if it would be true or not, but may transfer less vibration than ally. Hopefully i can get through to the supplier soon and he has some, if not can get some somewhere else soon . . .

Posted that up as it came straight to mind before I thought too much about body lifting. I've never done a body lift so is there non-metallic separation between body, chassis and the blocks anyway? If so then that'd be pretty ok as far negating galvanic reactions go, but poly even better.

I think from reading that anodic index the cast alloy would be anodic to the body/chassis so would be the block that would corrode, not the body/chassis. Perhaps someone more learned could confirm?

Installed the boss coil tower braces. Everything was going too easy and i thought i was a right smarty pants by hooking the back up to the block & tackle undoing the shock & sway bar taking tyre of and droping axle down- worked an absolute treat. Started undoing the bump stop bolts, was a bit tight then thought I'll get the rattle gun onto it what a great idea. . . Then snap! bugger!
Tried welding the bolt back on, was real right but tuning thought i might get it then snap sgain, couldn't get it to work after that. Didn't like the idea of drilling but didn't have much choice so drilled out the old bolt & re-taped and came up pretty good to my surprise.

They're not too bad, probably take half a day i recon. Just gotta watch the rear ones, they're captive in the body and loctited in, if they break free & start spinning need to butcher the floor to get them out. A bit of a pre soak & heat 4 sure to get them out.

Also picked up the speedo from patrolapart which they fixed as it started to do the spin up to 180 then go back down randomly thing just before it was off the road. May as well fix it now. . .
Question; seem to remember someone on here doing a thread on adjusting the reading by turning a variable resistor on the speedo somewhere, just wondering if this will work. . . Don't want to bugger it without knowing what I'm doing. . .

A bit better cleaned out, should save a bit of weight. Put in some 15mm coil spacers all round too, so with the reduced body lift should be similar to what it was.

Yep ! ! ☺ Yeah was quite a milestone today.
Yeah was in the engine bay of the new cab, was a ti so they have it. Gave it a light scrub and came up pretty nice. Yeah interesting to see how different it is, hopefully it's quieter! !
Was going to reuse the stuff on the cab side out of the silver one but is a little ratty. . Might give patrolapart a call tomoz see what they've got, if not do a bit of a patch job.

Should see the rear diff too OMG it's to die for . . Just need to do the front one, plan was to put in the diff brace while the body was off but ran out of time, that's next on the list. .

Ping Jing, seems pretty good, is cheaper than dynamat and a bit thicker i think. Pulled the factory stuff out of the firewall if the old one, is a little ratty in bits but think it's salvageable. . .

Yeah she's getting there although really struggling with the rear barn doors for some reason, just can't get them to line up and work nicely. Not sure what I'm doing wrong or is going on will give a rest for a bit and persevere later. If worse comes to worse I'll take it in to me panel beater hopefully his magic touch should work. . .

I had one pin break on the right side so I removed the hinge got the broken pin out and replaced the pin , put it all back on and couldn't get it to line up or close properly .
I can't quite remember what it was but think I had the hinge wrong way when I put it back on .

Nah didn't take them off. Was way off, then took the doors of again & ground off all the old seam sealer and got it pretty close. Adjusted both mounts of the hinge both in the cab & in the door. Just can't seem to get both top & bottom latches working together nicely at all. Arrgh was starting to drive me crazy ! ! . . .
