Have u checked the diagonal dimensions to make sure it's square?
Nah might do that tommoz. Thinking an extra pair of hands might help. Not sure what's going on sounds like their usually pretty stress free.

Just put the ARB compressor back in, love their stuff but the guy who designed the mounting for it has twisted sense of humor! . . . Or maybe I'm just struggling with everything at the moment[emoji6] . . .

Engine bay is starting to look more like an engine bay, cab hasn't changed much. . .

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/07/150.jpg

Some more shopping @ patrolapart ended up getting a new filter / primer housing as last trip it was playing funny buggers losing power and the hand primer sucking itself down when revs were applied. Everything else checked out as far as blockages / leakes so pretty hopeful this will solve it.

Dude coming round tomorrow to put in the glass in too. [emoji4]

Are they original frames in the side rear Rossco or did they come with the glass?Yeah they're original & in perfect nick. . . They're from the original cab pretty good seeing as the cab is a rust bucket. . . Maybe they were replaced at some stage.

Picked up the bonnet today from the panel shed. Took in the guard I buggered and he's going to patch the hole a bit. Also asked about the rear barn doors, he's going to pop around one night and give us a hand which is awsome [emoji4]

A bit more shopping & slow progress on the golden horse.

Went to fit the new filter bracket on the drivers side then found brake lines are in the way. New ones from patrolapart and she's all good. . . Although should have measured the fuel hose ad i need to get that. . Oh well another time. .

Also spent a bit of time frigging around with the rear guards. . . Trimmed a fair bit off the plastic stone shield thingies. Should be good, that pokey bit always holds mud then you end up shooting yourself in the face at the car wash [emoji6]

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/07/322.jpg

Had to make some little plate thingies to bridge the gap. .

Whats the go with the brake line. Was it just something with yours or is it something that needs to be changed on all GQ's?Nah all GQ's that have the filter on the passenger side. It does more of a dog leg and goes hard left around the the bracket. The other ones end up in the way of the bracket. Could do a bit of bendy bendy but would be a bit dodgey i reckon . . Could also get braided but probably a bit pricey for what it's worth. Cheers heaps for the bracket BTW ☺ ☺

Think i have my mind made up on some autotecknica ones like the ones Parksy put in his. . . Heard not bad and bad things about Autotecknica they are certainly affordable, Recaros and the like just can't justify spending over 2G each on a seat. . .

Forget zip ties , use electrical tape to fix a beer can half full of gravel to the exhaust pipe , put three cans on and vary the amount of tape you use .
As the tape melts and lets go the can drops and bounces up hitting the bottom of the car , no damage just a loud bang , if the first one don't pull you up the next ones will .

Just stuffing around fixing some wiring. I wish i knew this earlier but if you remove the rear vents you get perfect access into where i put the switches for led strip lights in the barn doors. Better late than never but would have saved a lot of heart ache shoving wires up into pokey bits ☺ good to keep in mind if anyone is going to do this.

Got the new seats in after a few drams! After not being able to pick them up initially the first time from Hallam, then they got sent to Adelaide, then finally decided to pick them up again during office hours finally got them. Loaded the big box in the car and one small box for the adapter (s), kinda looked at it then the bloke, then he said that's the adapter kit don't worry the other kits in the box. Had a funny feeling and sure enough when i got home only one kit - Arrrgh. Anyway after calling them the other week it only just arrived the other day.

They certainly look better than the old GQ seats but not too sure how much I like them yet. Need to go for a big drive to find out [emoji4] . . .

Then just need to sort out piping from airbox to turbo and just hook up to existing safari intercooler and piping from there. Rotate the housing down and that side of things will hopefully work. Pump should be good in theory but then get it down to dieseltec once all done see how it comes up.

After my doubts it came up really good, have given it little touch ups but will get it powder coated once i fix up the rock sliders and get them since too. Thinking about lashing out and getting some scrub bars while it's in with millweld too this week ore next maybe. .

Sits dead level on the car now so are very happy, the old one was rooted and is in pieces now. Chopped the middle bar, aerial mount and a couple of other brackets off to make one good one. Rossco
2nd October 2017, 07:29 PM
Good point, we'll see how it goes. Never really have a problem with it and kinda figure it will be similar to spotlights and relay box for a low mount which is what i was originally running without too many dramas. Spotties will be a litte more forward which might help maybe . .

I reckon you will be fine Rossco. There is plenty of room around the lights - not like you are sheeting off the entire radiator! Having said that though, I took mine off and went the light bars to open up the radiator, but my engine choice is renowned for running hot in Patrols. Worst case you install the spotties and they have to come off.

New snorkel & airbox - looks good just going to try and swap the 4 inch ram head to a 3.5 which goes inside and doesn't look as massive. Scrub bars, sliders & arb bar freshly sandblasted and powder coated. Dimple dies in sliders look wicked I reckon . . .

If you're travelling from Mansfield to Whitfield on the Whitfield rd there is powers lookout on the right and just before it is Boggy Creek track on the left ,any Hema or VMS show the track, should also be on any decent map of the area .
Follow that track till you come to the lake , great camping ,great fishing and 99 times out of a hundred you'll get a big sambar sprint past you on the track .

Good to see them now supplying their 4" snorkels with a 4" ram head. I'd stick with the one you got full advantage of the airflow, water can run down the outside of the pipe and the 4" head actually has a better mounting option

Took a day off and got the GQ over to KSR auto air and got the air con up & running. Only needed gas, pressure tested, no big leaks new gas and works a treat - icy as.

Also dropped into southern cross canvas and sussed out a custom awning which sounds pretty good. Going to go a separate side and rear awning which can join together and mount of aluminum track on the roof rack. Sorry AB may have stolen this idea lol. . .

Got rid of the old cab couple of weeks back for scrap. Few pics. .

Chop chop, c ya rusty GQ ☺ . . .

Yeah pretty scary. . . Thinking how it starts, obviously keeping it out of the weather helps a lot but in theory water / moisture shouldn't get in the roof from the outside the only way in is through the headlining. Probably a good idea to make sure never leave wet stuff in the car too. Also not a bad idea to fish oil or similar from the inside. . . would smell nice ☺

Nah you will find it gets in through the Seam Sealer in the gutters. if you run a roof rack and damage the seem sealer it will do this for sure.

The axe was @MB's idea and worked a treat. Can't believe how easy it sliced through it, just needed some grinder work through pillars. If you've got an enemy you want to get square with, axe and a few minuets will have a car in half i reckon, certainly was fun.

So took the GQ on another awesome trip up the hills last weekend. Went great but clutch started to get progressively heavy and heavier. Checked the vac lines & booster for leaks and booser was leaking like a sieve.

Put a new rebuild kit through it from patrolapart and is working like a charm again. Amazing how heavy they are without vac and how nice they are with it.

Couldn't find much info on how to pull it apart but tried twisting both halves without much success. Ended up levering out the tabs which worked pretty well. Probably took about an hour or two to pull out and apart and back in. Put the bloody push rod in the wrong way round so had to do it again! Bugger, but one of those jobs once done once was easy and probably took about 10 mins the second time ! .

Sent from my SM-G930F using TapatalkOooh tyre shine, that's a good idea. Power as in engine? Haven't done anything, going to get stuck into the turbo in the early new year. Should check when andy from Dieseltec opens again remember he was closed for most of Jan a while back.

Got the windscreen washers sorted, both motors were sized, just gave them a squirt & wiggle and came good, just need to fix the indicator light in the cluster then I think that's the last of the little niggling bits.

For anyone interested in getting the Borgwarner, I helped Rossco rotate the compressor and central alignment for his manifold today.

For a direct down compressor outlet app the wastegate was absolutely spot on to snug fit beside the recirculation valve.

Like 2mm gap thankgod!

I've never seen or obviously set up one like that but was perfect!

Yeah looks pretty good now all set up to mount up to the old dts manifold and safari front mount intercooler. Pretty lucky with everything seems to fit perfect. Reckon if we didn't have the outlet facing down would be getting very close to the block with the compressor side where it bulges out as dts doesn't have much angle facing out in the flange compared to the factory turbo manifold at least.

Got all fittings from Pirtek just need a couple of crush washers and 4" to 2.5" silicone elbow to go from airbox to turbo.

Drop the head off on Monday to Omar from go2 engines see what he thinks. . .

Oh yeah so. . . Had been meaning to give a bit of an update with the old thing but been kinda flat chat with things lately it's been crazy . .

So I ended up getting a little bit carried away with the motor and after pulling the head and and doing some cleaning of the block found a bit of carbon scoring in the bores (only a couple). Did a leak down test using some 2 stroke held fluid pretty well but one thing led to another and pulled the motor down for a strip and rebuild. Taken a while but should be ready to pick up tomorrow hopefully. Think I figured that while I'm here do the head, then thought half way there to do the bottom end too, plus kays were getting towards 400 and keen on doing some big trips in the future so will be good peace of mind knowing its all fresh. Keen as to get it going, has been balanced so hopefully is a bit smoother than before.

Everything is ready to go back together now, had to repair a couple of threads in the bell housing from when my mate just smashed a couple of bolts in with the rattle gun. (grrrrrrr )

Anyway should be up & running by easter then get some kays on it before a tune hang'n to get back into it TBH.

Motor is ready to go back in the car now, manifolds and turbo is on. Had a bit of a drama with the exhaust manifold, didn't think that I had to remove the studs in it to put on the adaptor to suit the BorgWarner. Anyway tried to get them out and they wouldn't budge even with heat a welded nut so had to drill out & tap 3 of the 4 but they came up alright in the end. . .

So motor is now in and getting close. A few minor dramas along the away but all good. Cheers again to Markie (Mudski) & AB, dropped the motor in last night although wasn't completely smooth sailing. Seemed to take a while to line up then were having trouble getting bolts in. Had a look at the sandwich plate and noticed wasn't lining up with the bolt holes which didn't make sense at all, anyway pulled motor out and drilled the plate out a bit then put it back in easier this time.

Came back to it this morning and noticed things still weren't lined up right then worked out what was going on. Felt a bit silly but lesson learnt and I guess it was getting late & tyred etc but reason holes weren't lining up was because the bracing mounts on both sides had been removed and put back in again were out of line. Loosed those then all good.

Next oh s#!t moment was when I lowered it down into the mounts, with the turbo outlet facing down to work with the safari intercooler, it hit the chassis big time. Thought i was going to have to totally re think intercooler piping but rotated housing so outlet was facing the block a little more & dropped in with about 10mm clearance so hope this is all good.

Decided to get it towed to the exhaust shop to get the dump pipe done so is off there tomorrow then will be close to firing up. Hope the thing works [emoji53] . . . Should do. . .

3rd April 2018, 08:26 PM
I'll give him a call in the morning see what he reckons. Said was trying to get the boost curve a bit smoother especially down low. Noticed driving it un tuned wasn't getting much out of it, only up to about 10psi until i gave it a stab once to take out in a gap with the traffic when it jumped up to about 20 something but wasn't very progressive, went well but. Fair bit of induction noise tho sounds like it's moving a lot of air just needs fuel to match. . .

Picked up the GQ last night from dieseltec, drives heaps better now. Set at reasonable level I'm happy with, pulls pretty hard if you give it a poke and cruises much better. Haven't had a chance to drive it much tho, had to go out for tea last night. So putting out 140kw and 500mn at the rear wheels at around 20psi could defiantly get more out of it but think it's enough for what I want it for.

What sort of KW would this setup be making at the engine - ie really wanting to know losses thru the drive - just curious.

Its fairly consistent with a td42 and manual box at around 25-30kw loss. So Rossco would be sitting around the 170kw area at the flywheel. Or nearly 230hp.

A bw at 180kw is for longevity. Once we start venturing beyond 200kw it starts to get a little hazier but the way the bw generates boost its much nicer on drive train. Remember you are not always using that amount. There is one up here that has been running 200rwkw+ for over 2 years now without an issue.

So took the GQ over to Cornell Diesel in Sunshine West (fair mission lol) the other day. Anyway since last tune haven't been entirely happy with it and was lacking pull from idle up to about 1200 revs. Also cold start had always been a bit rough on this pump (12mm one) and seemed to be quite a bit worse lately stalling on a couple of occasions and blowing plumes of white unburnt diesel even when it wasn't freezing cold.

Just got it in for a diagnosis at this stage and they found fuel looked very sus with most likely water contamination, said it looked like creek water. Pretty weird only thing I can think of is dodgey servo which could have been anywhere between Vic & WA. Anyway upshot is tanks need pulling out, draining and flushing, pump most likely needs a rebuild and injectors could be suspect too. Need to have a think weather is worth pursuing with this pump or just replacing with another unit such as UFI. Also obviously whole thing will not be cheap can do some stuff myself to keep costs down or look at insurance maybe. . .

Also thought oil feed was leaking on block but looks like one of the exhaust studs is leaking which needs to be fixed too. . . Ah the joys of tinkering with cars [emoji6]

Apart from that. Whats your thoughts with Cornells? I know they did wonders with my old SD33T I had years back.... Im soon to book mine in with AG Diesel, only because thats where my pump came from and they are close to work.

The place is pretty impressive is absolutely immaculate and a pretty big setup. Apparenty AG sold the business and the new guys aren't as good but that was just one person's opinion so don't know bout that one?

Not sure if i feel dodgey or they would be s#itty if I got another pump and got them to install it. Would go UFI. Did mention it breifly the other day didn't seem too pissed off lol . .

Will definitely upgrade filtration after all this, the water sensor on the filter is the only thing that isn't hooked up as part of the conversion.

Sorry Rossco. This is terrible news. The fuelmiser water separator is very attractive after this. Very popular for touring and i see why if this is the end result.

I cant imagine they would care if you buy a UFI pump or one of theirs, you wont be the first person to do that.

Before you lash out mate, get the tanks flushed and all lines drained.

For sure pump has issues but would be interested to see how it performs after that first and maybe another tune and diagnosis.

Yeah maybe need to make some decisions Monday. Looks like this pump probably needs a rebuild at this stage which will be close to the price of a new pump. They're gonna quote some stuff up by then hopefully, see what happens. .

So bit of an update, tried putting in an insurance claim for fuel contamination but didn't go too well. . You need a receipt from where the dodgey fuel came from, who keeps fuel receipts and crickies knows where it came from have filled the thing up a zillion times halfway across Australia. . . Anyways got Cornells to flush & treat tanks which is good thing anyway add sub tank was a little dodgey from the days it was a dual fuel tank so good to get that sorted. Ordered a new injector pump from United which arrived today. . .

This is what happens when you work with your partner and they send it with the price sticking up on the invoice. . Busted lol .

Racor do a good separator filter. Leave the standard one in place and run the racor before it. They can come with the switch to warn you when the water level is up there. Also if you havent already run a lift pump. A carter 4600 or 4601. Down close to the tank.

Rossco, I run a large dia. CAV wire mesh filter fitted with a 25 micron strainer mesh. This is on the outlet of the main tank - 147L one. There is a small RYCO in line filter between the aux belly tank and the main tank - I have a standard size CAV 296 filter unit ready to replace this when I get a chance - the little one does the job as it does not see much volume. The little RYCO is before the transfer pump in order to protect it. The transfer pump is a relative cheapie off ebay for circa $50 and Im carry a spare.

The Chev is fitted with an in-line lift pump before the injector pump, located approx under the drivers seat, which is a bit too far away from the fuel tanks in my view. The lift pump is protected with a small RYCO in line filter like the transfer pump in the rear. From the discharge of the lift pump, fuel gets finally filtered and water separated via a CAV 296 single filter unit with glass bowl. I carry a spare lift pump and spare inline RYCO units at all times.

I initially installed a CAV296 unit in the position of the 25micron strainer set, however the lift pump could not pull thru it. The lift pump is the one that BD supply and is rated at 75LPM, 16PSI outlet pressure, but be warned its entirely possible to over pre-filter and create too much suction loss from tank to injector pump - I know because my initial system failed - was starving, so the strainer is now in place to catch the debris and any globs. I did find also that the discharge line had a large constriction of muddy build-up from 20 years use, right on a sharpish metal tube bend. Flow from the second tand was so dismal the engine would stall when running just on that tank, so I converted the fuel system to a sub tank transfer to main and resolved it.

When I did this work I dumped all the fuel, and flushed both tanks out with 20L fresh diesel. There was a considerable amount of dirt and sludge that came out. I further flushed with 10L of kero, then let it all drain, reassembled with final system above and no problems since. I change the CAV fuel filters every 5000klm and the small in-line RYCO units after 2 x 4WD trips - simply good insurance.

I don't have an electrical switch indicator - simply not avail in this model. Whilst I am yet to get a belly of crook fuel, I think the style recommended by nissannewby is good as it will give you the warning in advance of trouble and when you are sitting in the car and cruising along - mine needs to be checked visually and this is a weakness as I will find out about water probably as the car splutters to a stop. I think I would try drawing thru the Racor unit and see if the lift pump can handle the suction loss. If yes, then you have max protection for lift pump and system. If not, I would install a small free flowing in-line Ryco before the lift pump, and pump thru the Racor unit. You just need to keep an eye on the contamination build-up in the small RYCO as the filtration area is small.

Cheers guys that's awesome, certainly some food for thought. So guessing lift pump is needed as extra filtration means more restriction / reduction in flow. Have a little ryco in line between sub and main and after main at the mo. Racor does look good will look into these a bit more like the idea of a warning when you need it.

I think the ryco is a short term/duration filter solution, not a lot of filter area and certainly no capability to separate water from fuel contamination. If you change the ryco frequently it is going to work, but I use them as sacrificial elements to take the load of the finer filters/more expensive filters, and yes they have minimal pressure drop because their filtration level is coarse.

As I said in the earlier post, you would need to suck it and see if the lift pump can draw thru the additional filter or if it needs to be after the pump - the lift pump should be able to provide the pressure boost to the main injector pump, however you would need to validate that - I dont have the specs on the pump recommended to you, but pumps 'typically' perform better with filters on the discharge side and strainers on the inlet side, unless the filter is correctly sized for the duty and the pressure drop. Either way you need to consider protection of the lift pump as well.

Having the indication feedback is the winning criteria I think. I would consider a direct replacement of the factory setup myself with the Racor if the filtration level is on par rather than adding the additional unit in line. I don't know the root reason why the lift pump is being recommended when the engine has run for 400K+ klm so far and note needed it?

Bit of an update but finally picked up the old GQ the other day from Cornells. Tanks nice and clean and glad to get the sub one professionally cleaned and sealed as was rusty from the days it was a belly tank on dual fuel and probably sat with a dribble of petrol in it most its life, so guess that's a positive to come out of this lol. Also got the injectors tested, were spraying ok but a fair difference in opening pressure so they're sorted now too.

Was very good to drive the thing again, they are an awesome old bus although still the issue of no power down low seems to be starting ok but.

Filled up the main and noticed the bloody thing leaking when I got back so will get them to have a look at that when i get this pump on and back for a tune, some things are never easy lol! . . .

Picked up the old bannga from Cornells and far out pretty happy lol. Fair increase in power & torque, more than i expected as i thought they were going to err well on the safe side of things! Anyway it's under 700nm which I'm happy with safety wise (just!) definitely don't want to go any further but has more potential to give. Low down pull is a Maaaaaasive increase to what it was and has erased any doubts I had that that was the way it was and was normal, response and pull from idle is frick'n awesome! ! Anyway just been driving it like a grandma so far but it's sooooo much more driveable now, can just cruise and it munches up hills with ease. So far egts and temp been very low. . .http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/11/183.jpg

Interesting. We should have a chat mateYep comparison was from drive in on old pump, thought it was putting out a little more than that actually. If it weren't for issues i would have been more than happy with it, once it was up & running was absolutely great but down low hopeless and starting issues. Many occasions pulled out into a small gap in traffic and would feel like it was stopped dead then would go once built up a bit of speed, which is not ideal lol.

Think they were pretty impressed, said it was one of the highest powered TDs they'd done, not sure they had much to do with BWs on TDs before. Certainly credit to the Queensland boys and AB for such awesome R&D pretty easy for us to reap the benefits now lol. Been very happy with Cornells too pretty impressive set up over there, clean as a whistle place. .

At 70kmh im producing about 100kw and you have 140kw already.

At 80kmh your on boil at 165kw and im just thinking about it at 140kw! I dont see 165kw to about 105kmh. Jesus! Thats a big difference.
