Like we discussed, if you are happy with what you've got then leave it but it certainly shows what you can do.

Yep if anything Rosscos should be lacking more with the tyres V ratios.

Definitely feels very strong in the bottom end and does love to pull around the 2k mark and is quite different to before, kindo used to it having nothing then coming in form 1500 ish. Even in neutral can tell the difference when you give it a little rev sounds pretty beastly now. Need to drive it a bit more to get more of a feel for it. Interesting to see the difference between mine & Daz's seeing their such similar setups, sounds like his loves pulling in the top end where as mine seems happier in the bottom wonder if that is down to tuning? ? Either way both setups sounds good, proof is in the pudding if it's good to drive happy days. .

Id have thought that his rev range at 75kmh would be similar to mine at 85kmh. So the missing link in comparing the readouts is that mine doesnt show RPM which would really show the differential.

Thats got my attention mate. Kinda lagging a little by comparison. And 120 extra newton metres.

Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

Its all irrelevant on the dyno. It has corrections in place for the calculation. We have been seeing this quite a bit and you can see it on ABs setup. A silvertop cam will bring on everything earlier over the t/ti cam.

Without actually worrying about what the numbers say the silvertop cam will roughly do everything aroind 400rpm earlier.

Also dont get to caught up in the differences between the dyno printouts. Dynos are just tools that we use for diagnostics and comparison. Trying to compare them to each other is very difficult.

This is the closest thing I have to be able to show you the difference. These 2 patrols have a very similar setup. Both bw turbos, both ruben 12mm, both front mounts.
Laying them over each other like this corrects them as if they were both done in similar conditions. Even though these 2 vehicles were done on the same dyno 1 after the other. The main difference one is a silvertop one is a td42t. Curves are basically the same shape but the silvertop does everything earlier. Peak numbers are similar.

Interesting. Thats basically the difference i see between Roasco and mine.

I have copied this convo from Roascos dynos onwards over to the turbo thread as its interesting and adds value there.

I assume they do corrections on weight of vehicle too and even the weight of when they torque the car down to the rollers with straps, etc?

So Darren and Rosscos cars are completely different with Rosscos being shiploads lighter and from different tuners, understand they probably calculate all that but thats only accurate with a guess of what the operator puts the data in as they both have shiploads of different accessories added and fuel, drawers, bars, winches, etc or is that minor in results?

I'll have to drag all mine out and overlay them, would be interested to see between my old silver and the Td42TI.

I have your readouts. You have a difference of pretty much the same as the ones I posted above and the same as darrens vs rossco. While there are subtle differences between the td engines the one thing that seemingly makes that difference is the cam. We have quite a few results now proving this.

Gave the thing a service and replaced brake pads with genuine ones and brakes definitely feel better, pretty happy with them now all things considered. Knew the rears were getting low but crickey not much left on one pad lol. .

Just need to replace both tie rod ends as they have a bit of slop and dreaded death wobbles have been rearing their head for a bit and pumping it full of grease isn't quite cutting it anymore.

Noticed cold starting not entirely perfect still, bit of white smoke and little rough, don't know what's going on there, apart from that bloody good and better than before, hot starting is perfect now.

Yeah I went from Bendix 4wd pads to OEM and its way better... As for your cold starts, maybe you have fuel leaking back via the filter head through the primer pump. Have you got one of those brake line clamps you can use on the fuel line just after the filter head? If you clamp it off and then leave it over night and then remove it and see. This may help with the outcome.

Been giving the old girl a bit of love this week just fixing lots of little nigling things that have been annoying. . . Fixed indicator light in cluster that wasn't working, just needed contacts cleaned, new washer motors- squirts with power now and bolted down tablet holder to dash after the crazy corugations on useless loop destroyed that lol . . . Was a fun job had to sticky tape the nuts too a spanner to get them on lol. . Decided to put a catch can on it too went with a HPD one have to say it's a very nice kit, if my filter was still on the original side would have been a bolt in kit but made a bracket and put it on other side and fits nice. Ready to enjoy i reckon . . .http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/12/401.jpg

Gave the old banger some attention today. . For some strange reason the stereo just s#!t itself and was dead as a doornail so replaced it with another pioneer single din unit. Pretty easy all just plugged back in and sounds better than the old one not that ther old one was bad. . Gave the inside a good clean as haven't done this since cape jaffa and sand everywhere lol. .

Got a bit excited the other day and ordered some snazzy OME BP51's for it, so had to swing over to patrolapart to pick up some extended bump stops as they are long travel ones. Pretty keen to see how these bad boys go just quietly, everything everyone says about them is pretty positive.

Well haven't posted here for a while lol. Anyways looking back shocks have had a fair test and all I can say is brilliant ! They're Set pretty soft haven't even bothered to adjust and play with them but they are great and just seem to do what's best whatever you throw at them. . .

Anyways thanks to Winnie scored some mint second hand Stratos seats for a good price. Gooood riddance to those horrible Autoteknica's guess you get what you pay for lol. Just finished fitting them up, they came with 100 series and 79 series bases and ended up adapting the 79 ones to line up with the GQ holes. Very happy with how they fit can adjust easily without being too tight, can't wait to go for good drive see how they go but feels like it will be driving a couch lol. Luckily heading off to Big Desert tomorrow for a few days can't wait !!http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/10/173.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/10/174.jpg

Its around the mounts to the car and the seat. If you don't intend getting it engineered, them put in what you like. If its going thru the engineering process, would pay to do some homework first and find out what is required. I am unsure about the seats though - would think if its an after market new seat you would not have issue, but there may be some assessment for say a transplanted seat from another model - say XR* seats into a Patrol which is a common swap. I have a Recaro drivers seat sitting on a Bostrum base that came out for engineering - need to find out what the go is there some time as a bit of coin tied up sitting in the garage.

So dragged the old girl out of the shed to help Nicko and see if we're could get down the hanger of the tree. . . All was going well till a bit of a clunk and then some suspect noises lol. . Ended up tearing captive nut(s) out of the winch. One was already damaged with a dodgey Sellys kneed it fix and then all too much for the poor high mount. Was a decent bit of lumbar that was speared into the ground and ploughing in and the top was pretty firmly wedged in there so were asking a lot lol. . .

Anyways time to get it going stronger with some mods while apart . .

Bad news Ross. Did you get the tree down though? I am a little surprised at the failure as the bolts should not have been taking much load - they are more positional than in tension, the load in compression is into the bar - maybe the damage was already done? Looks like the pull is pretty well straight into the winch?

Rossco
24th May 2020, 08:31 PM
Yeah damage already done I think. I did also think bolts more just position with most force getting put through bar but as rope isn't exactly in line with centre of drum / bolts there is a bit of twisting force going on from top to bottom and there would have been a huge amount of force going through everything was pulling pretty hard. . Anyways good to happen where it didn't ruin a weekend of driving so all good. Got it mostly down with a much smaller bit firmly still wedged in there so good for now!

Rossco, why is the mechanical free spool deleted? What's the mechanism on the air free spool that makes for the improvement?

Spool itself is cogged mate, alleviates pulling extra gears on the sprint, just have to spin the barrel only [emoji106][emoji106]

OK, so a manual slide is replaced by an air operated slide. I know the free spool was a pain on both of my high mounts simply because they tended to seize up with inaction. I guess if the mechanics are inside the drum they are protected, and there probably is a lot more avail force to engage/disengage?

MB
22nd June 2020, 11:21 PM
Somewhat similar to a starter motor bendix throwing into action except the exact opposite reaction I believe Philstar.
I think when our air is applied it throws the cogg forward off the piston line for unhindered barrel release.

Rossco, why is the mechanical free spool deleted? What's the mechanism on the air free spool that makes for the improvement? The old school warn way of free spooling is pretty crude really as you would remember. It's pretty dam hard top pull out as your spinning all the gears up to the motor. The freespool delete supports everything much stronger and also makes sure it can't pop out into freespool on its own. The air freespool is in the drum between the drum and spline which goes into the bottom gear so disconnects it right at the drum end. Can't really see it, mechanism is in center of drum but tested it on bench and seems to work, put air to it and will disengage. Assume it is a piston that moves a splined section in & returns with spring pressure or similar. .

Naughty boy Rossco! There was a set of overdrive gears on FB, 4000k old for $850 - almost bought them, but decided to wait a bit. Will be keen to hear if the overdrive gears run silently or howl like the transfer case gears do - though it might be the 85% reduction gears only - unsure, however did hear the surface finish on the red gears was the culprit. Are you going to do the installation yourself?

Was umming and arring about low range, didn't want to go crazy low so it was between the 20 something and 40 something and dude talked me into the 40s so should be good hopefully !! Awesome choice Rossco, personally reckon your circa 150rwkw TD42Ti with 43% reduction through to your 4.6 pumpkins powering 35’s will be the absolute perfect Vic-HC match IMH Acronym Opinion [emoji23][emoji106]
Our 6.5NA grunter slug is a wee bit too slow with 63% through to 4.3’s powering the same rubber sized boots.

Welcome to borrow our die grinder when the time comes too mate, I believe the higher 20’s from Marks are the only gears that don’t need slight internal casting alterations to fit, 43% I’m pretty sure does require a whisker or two off to fit.

A quick safety word of warning Rossco and others no doubt closely following your Magnificent Silver Brumby rebuild [emoji106][emoji106]
We do honestly need to relearn our twucks once reduction gears are installed. Not so much on climbing/crawling upwards but descending on very long tracks with varying terrain can become hazardous until familiar with your new set up...torquey...get up [emoji23]
A known experienced decent for me was that I ran out of RPM in a now extra slow 1st LR and couldn’t regain momentum traction needed.
I now select 2nd LR on that decent as it becomes a traction balancing act of rock scrabbling through to slick sliding and then back again if that makes sense.
Worst thing we can do is change our gear minds half way up or down and hit ‘Angel Gear’ (NO GEAR) and away we ALL go with horrific momentum consequences :-(

Just need to work out the 5th gear. Looks as if need to support the gearbox and remove crossmember and rear housing on gearbox, then hopefully doesn't get too fiddly. . Can see a bit of a high tide mark probably from bloody Balfour swamp but apart from that everything else looking pretty good.

Rossco I remember a while ago us trying to sort out a speed correction for the GQs. I actually just check with Patrolapart and got this response from Aaron. I got quoted $75 for the part needed, part number 3270331G16 for a 16 tooth.

"As for the speedo, you can change the gear on the end of the speedo drive in the transfer case.
Just slip yours out, count the teeth, then buy the tooth count that will change it approx. 20% which should be 2 teeth different to what you have."

I came across an article listing the different gears V tyre changes somewhere, will try to dig this up - might have even been on here?. Changes being stock to 35" tyres is a single issue, and 10% gear ratio change in 5th a different one - not sure you can achieve the speed change conversion as in this case one is a ratio change across all gears being the bigger tyres and the second is a ratin change on only 1 gear - at least that what i am taking from this Winnie.

Rossco
9th November 2020, 01:02 PM
Yeah it all seemed simple and there is a really good thread on here that has a great little table with tyre size, diff ratio and sprocket size needed. Spoke to Shorty (Patrolapart) about it and seemed the problem was getting the plastic sprocket off or something? Anyways cant quite remember and but might revist it soon. Seems like the simplest and cheapest solution i reckon, Marks so a kit for 250 but changing sprocket much better & cheaper I reckon.

In regards to the gearbox mods, all was going way too well had a feeling that all was to good to be true. . Got the crossmember and rear housing off Saturday evening then decided to start a fresh the next day. . Well that didn't help, went to pull off the bearing on the back of the main shaft and didn't realize there are little C retaining clips so kept cranking till the outer shell cracked and went flying damit. . . So now left with the inner with nothing to grab on to with the puller so had to grind some little slots then eventually got the bugger off. . Then tried to pull 5th with selector syncros off but just couldn't get in there with the puller so after stuffing around with puller (like trying to wrestle a bloody octopus) gave up and drank sum beer which was the best decision of the day by far. . .

Called YV 4WD today and they are happy to do the 5th gear for us just need to get it there lol. So to answer you query Phil, yes can be done but need a good selection of pullers, the gear on the main shaft looks like you need a cup type puller too which I didn't have. Working under vehicle wasn't too bad really, just wasn't happening with what I had lol . .

GQ back together and all good (almost lol) Reductions are wicked really happy with the 43% so far (up & down driveway). Nice and slow but not too slow for me anyway. 5th gear is THE best, wish I did it ages ago, car is finally happy at 100. Sits bang on 2G @ 100 and cruises soooo much better.

Only problem at the mo is not shifting from two to four easily? When first put the shifter back on and tried couldn't select 4 at all then finally forced it in then was perfect after that, but after test drive is bloody hard again damit. . The oil cooler is pretty easy to do, I did mine when it was out of the car but it's just a couple of o rings and a few gaskets inside it.
Would be much trickier in the car though. That one leaking would just be the large external gasket.

You will be impressed with the brake shaft too. It wasn't until.i fitted one that I realised how much of an upgrade it was, not just a circuit change.

We need to get that 24v pumping mate!!!

You probably won't fit 40m of 12mm on your drum either. When I make the soft shackles I needed about 3m of 12mm per shackle FYI or.make a 10m extension strap (well 7m by the time you splice a loop in each end. Nice fluoro Orange for the win

Yeah old mate who I got the bar off made a 50mm receiver for trailers so will be perfect for mounting removable dildo when in the bush only. . See how we go with rope is actually 10mm tho but should do the trick hopefully. . Think last time out rope on got 40 m and chopped about 10 off to make extension but that was with standard diameter drum so deltatec get a bit more on. . Dildo 75mm think better choice than 50. .

Bloody Tassie probably explains TD not loving the heat & hills. .

We did a great job on the radiator in the bush but still $1000 dollar mud to be found. . Think TDs need everything bang on to be happy on the scorchers. .

Winch all back together not without a few dramas tho lol. . Could not get the motor out from top hat ended up drilling hole in feespool delete as that was equally impossible to get out (remember putting it in was so tight thinking this will never come out damitt). . . Anyways bit of belting on end of motor shaft out she came. . Spine that runs on bearing in freespool delete (winch gear) was flattened so explained why she wouldn't come out but unsure why the damage happened[emoji848].

Anyways fixed spline good enough, taped hole and put bolt in and and happy days. Upgraded brake shaft in and looks good, everything so much more secure than the standard warn set up. .Put winch back in car worked all good till bloody noisy and realised put ratchet plate in backwards damitt. . . Fixed that then happy days[emoji106][emoji106]

New rope & hook. .

Removable dildo works a treat thought spotties might be an issue but think all good. .

New improved delta tec clip thingy should hopefully be a bit more durable than before[emoji106]. . .

GQ back in the hills after a bit of a birthday party at the auto elec and workshop. . List of things fixed as follows. . . Had parasitic draw tracked down to faulty alternator which I need to chase up and replace as is brand new but at least know what it is. . Installed lift pump (Carter). Was thinking optima batteries both just over a year old were knackered but with new big earth strap is cranking of its head now so very happy[emoji106]. Pyro fixed ( needle was off chops all over the place). Fixed battery monitor not showing imput from redarc BCDC (neg wasn't going through shunt simple fix but needed fresh set of more professional eyes). Think that's about it in the auto elec department she's petty sorted now (apart from swap alternator) so ready to put in Redwinch supercharger soon. . . Picked up from there then dropped @YV4WD for new front wheel bearings, stub axles and uni joint in rear shaft bloody Tassie mud damitt. . Think she's about ready to enjoy now[emoji106][emoji106]

So after last trip away ARB single compressor which is pretty old and done a heap of work gave up on life, luckily held on long enough to run lockers and winch freespool for a marathon winch halfway up Mt Selma. Decided to upgrade to Little one to run lockers and winch freespool and double for tyres. . Long time coming as usual but all installed now. .

Old single was mounted in corner and as locker compressor nice and compact managed to move that to back of aux battery tray and fit in red winch supercharger in corner spot. . Fits prefect was meant to be lol. . .

Looking back at this thread was a year ago got everything discontented from aux battery tray to hook up 24v . . Can't rush things I spose but close now lol.

Put double under front seat and fits a treat [emoji106]

Used old fire extinguisher (cheers Daz) for air tank directly under it. .

Got rid of most of the ARB loom and ran 6b&s through midi fuse from lithium in the back. Apart from that you can just switch the compressor from the purple wire going into it. .

Gave it a little go and seems like it will be a beast. Certainly wouldn't want to run lockers off it if mounted in cab, she loud and also may double as a masage seat on those long and lonely trips [emoji106][emoji106]

I see you have the intake filter at floor level. I ran a hose under the carpet and door trims so I could mount the filter in the rear quarter panel trim card. It made it a hell of a lot quieter as the intake is so far from the piston. Now there is less chance of flooding the compressor.

I have my twin under the pax seat. Not that loud. Plus Catherine gets a kick out of the under seat vibes! Lol.

I need to put a compressor in the Mrs new car, I've been tempted to buy a twin ARB and put it in my Patrol, then take the single out of my Patrol for her MUX... hmmmm still thinking about it.

It’s easier to ask forgiveness, than get permission for your well planned “Good Family Adventure GQ Upgrades”Chrisso Mate [emoji106][emoji106]
FWIW: ARB twins need at least their purchased outlet rubber/braided lines given within. Great things, crikey than can melt lines if attempting to get ingenious re-routing and nuffy stuff [emoji23]
