I think everything is right! A couple of trips to the Autopro sorting out stupid sized clamps !! All the boost lines are sorted and the tools are cleaned up!!

Ready now for coolant and oil. Turn key. Bleed coolant and heck for leaks then road test, check for leaks and play with boost. Check for leaks. Second battery in. Just having some lunch.

Just a little drive. I got out a few times to lift the bonnet. A little bit of smoke from stuff burning the crap off.

Playing with the boost controller to find its range and I think it's about 22psi now. The cut off dump pipe is very close the the clutch line and I gave it a fair go from a rolling start in second and it pulls well. Much more lively than before. Boosting from low it's a bit boggy like the other one but I don't have a pyro and don't know what my EGTs were but when I went to pull up I had no clutch!! I think I just cooked the fluid in the line close to the dump though. A couple of pumps and it was back.

Called it a day. I'll limp it into the exhaust shop tomorrow before giving it another push.

I did a U turn and did a standing start. At take off the whole car stands up!!! Not just lifting the front left! All 4 wheels seemed to want to lift!! No shit! Like it was in a crouch then stood on takeoff!

It's no race car but I think this thing is going to be a towing beast!

So I bought premixed coolant and there I was at the end of emptying the first 5lts of coolant into the radiator. I noted it was pretty thick. Slowly going in I read the label upside down and it was bloody concentrate! WTF?? Damn it. Off with the bottom hose and got most of it out then mixed it 50-50 and refilled.

Turned the key was awesome. Bled the coolant for about 20mimutes.

Happy days!!

Did you put the thermocouple back in for the drive home? Egts?

yeah i did mate, i gave it a bit of a flogging too ;)

so its showing about 15psi at 2000rpm and 25psi by 2500rpm, its a lot more responsive. I could not get the EGTs to 400c. before i could make it show 600c easily if i pushed it hard enough. definitely need to get it on the Dyno and keen to se the outcome for sure. Its a different car to drive.

5th December 2016, 02:07 PM
Yeah. Sounds like it needs a little more pre load on the gate. As I have said before getting the timing sorted will help if someone has played with this in the past. These electronic pumps dont like to have the static timing mucked with to much. When are you looking at getting it to dieseltec?

MudRunnerTD
5th December 2016, 02:59 PM
Hey! Preload on the gate i can do! how much do you think i should add? the nut is flush with the end of the rod now. the Hi Boost actuator is rated from 24psi to 35psi or something so does that mean it doesn't open the gate until after than?

Hey Sooty, Sorry missed this. So i was running a cheap Chinese Boost controller that ran a T piece and 3 lines. It always made this Odd sound and was never happy with it. I figured id fit a new better quality Turbo Smart unit this time. Just piece of Mind mate.

Kind of the same reason i fitted the new Radiator and Water Pump. The TD GUIV has done me very well but i have not really touched it. time for some love. Just also did a full Service and replaced the Gearbox and Transfer oils too.

When looking around with Daz I found that on track fabrication in WA had a fairly good deal. They do an airbox the same as fatzs but in 316ss and $100 cheaper. Was also cheaper on the snorkel. Radius Fab as well with his snorkel and panel airfilter box.

Still at DeiselTec.

Thanks Matty for chatting with Andy while it's on the Dyno.

So I rolled on at 80kw and 299Nm of torque.

After 13 runs on the Dyno it's off getting the pump timing done. The pump is pretty lazy and maybe near end of life. My 3.9 diff ratios are bogging it down below 2000rpm. Not finished yet but we are at 107kw and 400Nm of torque with peak power from 2400 to 3500rpm.

These figures are fairly good for your ratios/tyres and age of the fuel pump. If the timing is out like I suspect then that will help as well

nissannewby

Need to try and focus mainly on the torque figure. Peak os good but mostly how it generates the torque and then trying to keep the torque for as long as possible.

So a Big day at DieselTec.

got there just after 9am after battling bloody peak hour traffic. All good i was booked in for Dyno Tuning and Pump Timing.

Straight onto the Dyno and the first run was 80rwkw and 299Nm of Torque. My previous tune had been 92kw with the HT18 and i have no idea on Torque so i was a little surprised it was less but made sense as there was only a little gain when driving it. Of most interest was the lack of Boost. I had the gauge in side saying 22 to 25psi but Andy was getting less than 10psi on his bypass unit! WTF!! Andy advised the the way i had my boost controller meant i was getting a spike from the controller rater than the turbo and a false reading inside.

He cut out my boost controller completely and made it redundant.

6 Dyno runs alter and no real gains Andy asked if he could speak with Matty. This thing was making No Boost, laggy and a power band in the hi 2000s. I did not hear much of the conversation but did hear a comment about the exhaust housing may be the wrong one. this thing was bogged. I watched with interest Andy's body language when he was on the phone to Matty and to his credit there was no negative shrug or head shake, he was open to the conversation and moving forward to get the best result.

so after maybe a 10 or 15 minute conversation between Andy and Matt it was agreed to keep playing with the actuator to engage it and chase the boost. Both guys were saying though that the Pumo appeared to be at end of life and likely causing issues with the tune. BUGGER!

Oh Well, lets see what happens. A few more runs and we had 107kw and 399Nm of torque. Kinda happy days. the Numbers looked great but the power was at 2500rpm which is terrible. All i could think about was Timbos GU which had a big turbo and was a dog of a thing.

Rolled it off the Dyno to have the pump stripped to get the the timing so i left for an hour or so for some lunch and a break. When i got back there was another guiv there that had just been Dyno'd so i asked how it went. "Rolled in at 80kw and tuned to 97kw" "16G UFI with 4.1 diff ratios" Yeah right, well my 107kw is looking bloody good then. "how was the Torque Curve" "Come and ill show you"

At the Dyno Andy brought up my last run then laid the 16g over the top. Bloody Hell!!!! I want the 16g. My head sank. this thing made power at 1750rpm, peak at 2100 and 87kw by 2000rpm. Beast. Be comparison i was making 40kw at 2000rpm and my curve to 107 was a flat line. my head was in crisis!

Damn!!! my day was crashing. The young bloke was still working on the pump timing. An hour later Andy comes out to tell me the pub timing was advanced by 2.4 degrees. he advised though that this had been done by someone to correct was may have been a lazy pump and advised against turning it back down. The problem was it was a lot of work to strip to adjust. if we adjusted it back Andy was confident that i would loose power and the tune would go to shit. He recommended bolting it back together and getting through Christmas at 107kw and plan for a New pump in the New Year. I was Flat as a tack. Andy was great and spent a fair bit of time talking to me about where we were at but at the end of the day he was confident that we would loose result. It was a tough gigi.

I gave Matty a call to bounce off this problem. Matty stood firm. Adjust it back to factory, this pump has been a dog and it needs to be sorted out. adjust it back to factory. mark the timing case to current setting so it can be moved back if it goes to shit but it won't. These pumps don't like being advanced.

To his credit, Andy did not blink. I told him i wanted to go with Matty's recommendation to retard the timing back to factory settings. mark the casing and see how it goes. This was a bloody big call. Andy said, No Problem we will do that. This was against his recommendation and i give him credit for allow my the space to make the call.

the adjusted the timing and bolted it back together. an hour later i was back on the Dyno. The young bloke put the car on the dyne and got it ready for Andy's return. Andy came over and said "Well here goes" i had bloody everything crossed!!!

after a warm up run he gave it the gas. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Numbers...........

117kw 446Nm Torque! YOU BLOODY RIPPA!

i might have sworn out loud!!!!

Andy powered down the car, turned it off and invited me in to the Dyno screen. "How'd we go? looks Good!", Andy said "Well takes a bit to impress me.......I'm bloody impressed!""

H A P P Y F U C K I N G D A Y Z!!!!!

TRANSFORMED THE CAR!!!! Bloody Magic i tell you!!!

Not only did the numbers all improve which is all i could see from my vantage point but, BUT, Boost came on much earlier, Power came on Much earlier. Completely different car!!

Andy laid the 16g back over the top again and my line was nearly identical to the 16g but 300rpm later (diff ratios) and the 16g flatlined at 97kw and i have another 20kw.

So.

Starting numbers - 80kw and 299Nm of Torque.

Final Dyno run - 116kw and 446Nm of Torque. Peak power from 2050 through to 4000rpm...............(little giggle) Fark Yeah!!

Thanks to Andy from DieselTec for his patient and cooperation and his willingness to consider alternate advice and a Huge thanks to Matty, You just know Stuff!!

oh, i rolled out of there at 5:30pm. 4.5 hours on the Dyno with no less than 25 maybe 30 runs! 1/4 of a tank of fuel used on the Dyno!! 2.5 hours of Workshop time. Andy looked after me on the price but it was A lot!

What was the pump finally set to? What is considered as factory setting?
For example, my factory setting on my TD42T was 0.56mm and I set it at 0.70mm. I hadn't heard of pump timing being expressed in degrees before.

Good write up too!

Sorry mate you are right. It was late last night and I figured that was the measurement. Your right, it was off a dial gauge so clearly not a degree measurement. They were talking about rotating so I called it degrees.

This was all outside my knowledge base but the pump was 2.5 points out. From memory yesterday I think Mat said factory was up to 0.6mm and I was 2.5 point outside that so assume it was 0.85mm. I'm not sure how far back it was retarded but under 0.6mm. Given there was a big question mark as to whether it would be worse or better I can't imagine they went back much more than the 0.6mm limit.

What a change!!! I will post up the Dyno print outs today.

So here are the tell all sheets!

All reports show the Blue line as the Drive in Baseline measurement.

First report is tuned to 108kw and 393Nm of Torque. Note the steady climb in power peaking at 2620rpm. I was making about 60kw at cruising hwy speed of 2000rpm. Not ideal. I'd be forced to tow in 4th just to get into the power band

First Tuned Run. No pump timing check

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/12/179.jpg

Bit the bullet and retarded the timing back into factory specs.

Ta Da!!

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/12/180.jpg

Quote "Takes a lot to Impress me..... I'm Impressed!" Completely moved the power curve back into position. Boost came on and stayed!

Epic!!

So by now the car was suffering from Heat Soak and every Dyno run was loosing so we had to rest it to cool.

Bloody happy though.

Here is my Mock Up of the 3 runs over each other. Sorry I did not get the 16g run but it's basically the same but earlier.

The ti pumps with there basic electronics are an odd thing.

Even so a lot of this is still Andy's efforts. This is what makes him a good tuner. He is happy to try different things without making a fuss. He didnt have to do anything I suggested yesterday I am just a nobody and I wouldnt have been upset if he didnt take it on board, it is after all his business.

Same as every other aus supplier. 7-10days. So they dont keep stock or very little and just purchase out of the us when you place an order. There lowest advertised price on that site is a little higher than what you can purchase them out of the states yourself. Au suppliers are really behind the ball with the supply of these turbos.

I would agree too Dowie, Andy at Diesel Tec has seen a few of these now on Patrols where most have not. He knows what to do and how to tune, I know it's a slight hassle to get over east from west but get all the bits and just drop it off.

You could even just spend a day over here whilst he fits it. 100m up the road is a roller skating rink which is dead during the week and you can hang out there with a nice cafe etc.

If you do head down this path put up a list of everything you've bought so we can ensure you have everything ready to drive in/out same day.

Ummmmmm.......

Forgot the camper was there for the whole trip. Could not feel it at all!!

Cruised at 105kms all the whole way. Hit 110km zone and had no trouble cruising at 115km/h.

Oh, overtaking Sucked a big one! 125km/h in 5th without thinking about it, just rolled on!

Sik!

EGT sat at around 420c for most of the day and about 22psi.

On a big climb I saw 550c just. Hit 30psi a few times too. But safe, felt safe. Not a stressful drive for me at all.

I can see that fitting a decent intercooler now will help a lot. That cruising temp would drop into The 300s.

It just ate the kms and ate the camper.

Was boggy off the line and going to 4.1s is high on the list to do now, that would probably drop the EGTs too as it would lift the revs better into the power band.

Bloody great drive, really got to know it today Matt. Very pleased mate.

Mamba 18g 6cm I think?
UFI 18g 6cm I think?
Borg Warner something???
Swapping diff ratios to 4.3s from 3.9s ( anyone have any they want to sell?)
Hi flow injectors
Inline pump.

Is 18g X 6cm the right setup? I understand it will boost fairly early so good for towing.

I'm keen Not to upgrade the pump. I might need a clutch though?

Hoping to see somewhere around 140 to 160 rwkw. Currently pushing about 95rwkw

Cheers guys

What i really wanted was to be able to Tow the Camper and Hit the Beach and not stress that i was running for 5 hours with the EGT gauge at 550C!!

I have absolutely fulfilled this wish.

As well as the Borg Warner i have fitted a Brand new radiator, a hi output fan, a Hi output JPC Water Pump and a Hi flow low temp thermostat.

When i hit the beach it was a dream come true guys. OMG!! This thing is a Beast. in previous years id be straight into Low range and use 3rd 4th and 5th all day. No Chance! I was in Hi range the whole trip really. It just Ate the sand.

So 2000rpm seems to be the weak link as it had previously been. Trying to pull at 2000rpm before this turbo would see the EGTs bounce out the top. 550c easy, 600c no problem although i tried desperately to avoid this from happening. With the new Turbo if i am trying to pull hard in a hi gear at 2000rpm (Say 4th gear at 80km/h on the beach) i can raise the EGTs to 550c, but back off and its down to 500c. Drop back to 3rd at 3200rpm and it drops back to 420c immediately and purrs! This was not really a problem to be honest it was just that was the cruising speed for parts of my Murray Mouth Run.

So i did the Mouth of the Murray River run, 170kms each way on the beach. Hard beach, Soft Beach. Deep as Fark Beach!! I led 5 cars and just soaked it up. seriously! this thing was awesome. No Shit! can't believe how good it is!

I had a mate with me with a GUIII TD42Ti looking for an upgrade to tow a 3t van around Australia, he was very interested. He was stock as a rock, 2' lift and 4.1 diffs. I have 3.9 diffs so he has the advantage. I lined him up on the beach! from a standing start in Hi4 1st gear we gave it a run. I immediately launched and left him standing! by second gear i had 5 cars on him.! WOW. middle of 3rd i blew my intercooler hose off and that was that. Very Impressive. and this gave me some perspective as to how big this upgrade really is!.

I will certainly benefit from a 4.1 diff centre swap and that is now very high on the list. This would also solve that 2000rpm issue mentioned above.

I have not yet refitted the heat shield. Damn it!! i blew the intercooler hoses off no less than 6 or 7 times on the return leg of the Murray run. This event is the interlude to a bigger intercooler that will not blow hoses so it was timely ;) A better intercooler would drop my Beach cruising EGT of 420c probably down to 370c or even less and that is magic and would be worth the investment.

I got very bogged 3 times on the Murray trip. each time i was helping a stranger. each time i self recovered. each time they were very bogged and needed a decent recovery. The GUIV delivered the power each time to drag very bogged cars out of the heavy sands.

Do i need more power to fulfil my requirements?? NO! this thing is Epic!

I am relaxed when driving and not stressed, i got used to being able to overtake and not worry about running out of road or winding up enough momentum.

So Diff Gears and intercooler for EGT control are on the list now. The fact that each of these changes will give me a performance gain too is a true Bonus.

I have No Hesitation in recommending this setup to anyone looking for a rejuvenated TD42Ti tuned for reliability, safety, Power and longevity.

Matty! Your a bloody Legend mate!

How did the economy fair?

I used 6lts more on the Mouth of the Murray run which was 340kms on the beach than the 100 series TD and 8 its more than a 76 V8 Cruiser dual cab. i used a total of 116lts for the run up the beach. Note that i have fitted the lift pump producing 6psi of fuel pressure and this has created a leak in my Donaldson Fuel filter assembly which might see me strip the system off completely. that has got to be worth 4lts of that usage i reckon.

So Bloody Good!!

No idea around town and have not driven it without a load yet.

Just a little update, I have not made any changes to the car but drove it today Towing a tandem with a motorbike onboard for a ride in the bush.

A good testing ground for me is the Geelong ring Rd. It has a number of epic hill climbs that used to see me go down to 4th early and even grab 3rd on occasion to control EGT temps off the chart. Today I traveled the road in both direction with the trailer, both ways has a huge hill.

I held 5th @ 105km/h the whole way and caught myself speeding at 115km/h a couple of times. Just so relaxed.

It's amazing how much oil levels change from icy cold mornings to warm afternoons. Had me stressing a bit!

Levels can change 5mm to 7mm on dipstick.

Being lazy, didnt want to read 41 pages. Would like a non-technical answer if possible.I am Looking at fitting a turbo to an 01 4.2N/A ute, 289xxx kms. Dont want to spend big $$. What brand turbo and would I have to intercool it as well ? ( my wagons not intercooled) Not looking for go fast or anything. More for towing power, and to get rid of the 'black fog' I'm currently running. ( old thread, I know. Saves starting a new one.

Hey Kat how much would you want to spend?

for an extreme budget I would try and find a second hand ht18 turbo that someone is upgrading theirs.

Standard turbo for td42 and turbo manifold.

Putting an intercooler in would be ideal, you might even find a complete turbo and IC set up like this one below...

Td42 Gu turbo and intercooler kit on Gumtree http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/1187227775?utm_campaign=socialbuttons&utm_content=app_ios&utm_medium=social&utm_source=sms

Hopefully Matty can help here but I would look for shaft play of the turbine, condition of fins on turbine making sure they don't have chips out of them and the shaft doesn't move side to side too much.

Check the inlet where the fins are to see if any scratches on wall and check if any signs of oil leakage around turbo compressor housing.

Check for cracks on IC and just general condition checks, etc.

Roll off

176rwkw.

AF of 21
Max EGT of 550.

Speaking with the Tuner tonight and he compared the result to a UFI 18g but with a better AF ratio and lower boost. He was very please.

When it was tuned by deiseltec Andy re removed the boost controller ans tuned the boost off the Actuator which he set at 27psi. 4wdObsession didnt want to change that setting so gave me a safe tune with what i presented.

Roll On Power is kind of crazy in 5th and plenty of punch in every gear.

Very happy. Clutch feels weird but once im used to that I'll be stoked.

Darren, great install. Word of caution though, from bitter experience with the silicone bends on intercooler circuits, and bearing in mind my boosts were a lot less than yours - those elbows are going to give you grief. The bends get hot and they slip from under the clamps. I see you have gone with the heavy duty bolted units, but. I found the only way to retain the silicone bends was to 'cocky spatter build up ridge' like a furl, so the hose clamp could clamp against a ridge and not allow the hose to slip. To rectify mine after a heap of trouble and twice coming home with leaking pipes on a 2.8TD - not fun - I converted the system to SS elbows and kept the joiners on the straight sections where they don't see the change of direction forces in play. Just my 2c observation.

Yeah cheers Phil. I had a fair bit of trouble blowing IC hoses off with the factory top mount so i know what you mean. I have tried to use the good quality clamps everywhere although i did run out and had to tax a couple from other tasks which i might swap out. Hot summer day and long beach run will test it out for sure. Thanks for the comment mate, ill keep an eye on it.

Hi all, so I have been reading through this thread for a while now and am inspired to give it a go myself. This thread has answered loads of my questions but I want to be 100% sure with what im going to be spending my hard earned on.
So I am in the same boat as MudRunnerTD: td42 HT18 looking at buying the BW6785 and -everything that goes with it, hoping to keep the 11mm (non-electrical as its 2000 model) and factory low mount manifold. not chasing big power by any means, just need to get rid of the HT18 before it self-destructs (its done ok for 350000km). This is the website I have been looking at: https://www.full-race.com/store/borg-warner-efr/turbos-efr-series/borgwarner-efr-6758-turbo-2/ , Opinions?. Cant seem to find out what adaptor plates I will need anywhere. I live in a pretty small country town, i believe about 300km away from anywhere that does diesel tuning, could that be an issue?

Thanks guys, new to all this forum stuff so apologies if I'm not using it right.

This what you need Dazz, this is from GCG but shop around as prices have come up a bit...

Try out Eastern Turbo Chargers in bayswater and MTQ

You may need a short bracket for the actuator but I have one here for you.

Are you going to upgrade your airbox too?

Thanks for that list, what do you recommend for oil/water lines? Also is Ebay the go for buying the turbo? I cant imagine it would be since the listings on ebay I found with a quick search were already in Australia, so im assuming that price would be marked up from the US?

Thanks

Ok, so been doing more research. Fond this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Borg-Warner-EFR-6758-A-Turbo-54mm-T25-Single-Scroll-0-64-A-R-250-500hp-179388-/183065247157?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10#viTa bs_0 . Thoughts? Is under $2k landed to aus which is considerably better than any other seller I can find. I'm still unsure with the actuator, whats wrong with the one it comes with? What are dual port actuators? I read another thread that spoke about electronic boost controllers, thoughts? Current turbo has a boost Tee, can that be used? Will I need a different actuator bracket?
Mudrunner, what was the problem with yours on the dyno, as in how did they resolve the boost issue? From reading yours I gathered that your pump had been advanced in the past and they set it back to factory. This was enough to improve it completely?

As for fuel pump (lift pump), I see that you also installed one of them, is this essential?
For oil/water fittings, what local stores would stock what I need? There is no Pritek within 700km of me. Would agriculture stores have them? (live in the country)

Sorry for so many questions, feel like there is so much stuff I need to know before I even consider buying anything.

P.S Why are v-band clamps so expensive??

Hi Rob,

Yes my 11mm pump was advanced causing me issues and probably causing me issues well before the BW was bolted up. my EGTs where off the top for years. drove me nuts. When the timing was corrected the change in the Dyno reading was extraordinary and you can see that by the dyno charts earlier in the thread, the only change there was the timing of the pump!!

Deiseltec removed my boost controller and tuned the boost off the actuator. i thought this was a little unusual and my most recent tune the tuner did not want to play with it? so left it set at 26psi which is good for me.

I believe the actuator that comes with the turbo wont go more than 25psi maxed where as the replacement will go to 35 if you want. Rather than being at the limit give it some wriggle room with a better suited actuator.

The VBand clamp should be available off the same page as the turbo and i got mine from USA. The oil and water lines will be available locally but very unlikely to be from your local Elders sorry. Your better to get the details from this thread somewhere and order online. AB posted the fittings etc at some point early in the thread.

one of the other guys will chime in too.

Right. So if my budget didnt allow me to spend the extra $300 on the actuator, I could run the one that comes with it for a while, or at least untill I get it tuned perperly?

Alright, awesome. Has anyone ported the factory exhaust manifold? Im thinking about trying this and getting it ceramic coated. Might also get my adaptor plates and exhaust side of the turbo ceramic coated at the same time. I want to keep my HDP top mount so want to keep as much heat away as possible.

Has anyone paired their BorgWarner and dual port actuator to an electric boost controller? Been trying to do more research into getting the most out of 6758, could a GFB G-Force electric boost controller be a good unit? Does the actuator bracket need to be changed to accommodate a new actuator?
What I'm looking at:

I want to get the electric controller, I don't think anyone here has done it unless Matty has or knows of someone?

Yes the bracket needs to change as well mate which is good as mine was bloody close to the engine bay (GQ) and even still hammered the panelling in a bit for engine movement.

Alright no problem, reading a thread on another website and they were saying that an electric controller and dual port actuator really gets the most out of the little efr. Would you happen to know which bracket I will need if I am using a factory manifold?

Darren have enjoyed the read. Maybe U will be able to help out with a common mod.

Induction - Came across your thread searching for Fatz and Radius Fab air boxes and snorkels.

CRD as U know but looking for improved flow, currently run Fabwitz SS rnd Airbox (K&N)/ 3" pipe to turbo / JT cooler (TMIC Tube&Fin). Looking to improve low down torque and run generally.

Like the Radius snorkel (fwd facing), build and cost. What Ram hd did they supply or did you by an other(type)?

Airbox - Too much stuff under bonnet to shift bits to fit Radius Panel LS1. Maybe the Fatz airbox (depends on function and $$s). Fatz say their filter box fits with 2nd battery tray, only need to trim radiator cowl a bit.

Your air filter, is that Radius Fab (eg: 100mm pod filter)?
What dia is filter can/canister, I am interested in radial clearance between OD of filter and canister ID and clearance between base of filter pod and bottom of canister.
Is the 4" inlet at base centrally fitted or offset?

Radius must be very busy, have made initial contact and waiting for follow up.

Hi John. The filter is a 150 long pod filter. i have recently swapped the filter that came with it for a new K&N and found that the K&N was about 2mm to big to fit through the hole!!! I ended up using a hammer to panel beat the outer edge of the pod until i got my 2mm back and the pod went into the box! I was flabbergasted that this airbox did not fit a standard sized K&N Filter straight in. for the sake of a couple of mm it was ridiculous. I dont know what brand of washable filter is supplied but it was slightly smaller than the K&N.

There is surprisingly a reasonable amount of room around the filter. the filter is mounted to the lid which is on a slight angle making plenty of room in the box. The box is 4" in and 4" out and the induction noise from my car is off its TiTs!!. Really loud and Turns Heads.

The forward facing Ram Head came with the Snork and is basically the same as a safari head but in 4" Looks Sik and works Great. the induction Noise in the cab is very manageable by comparison to a rear facing. Love it.

Thanks Darren, guess having the filter @ angle will encourage the air to flow around pod (this is good). What minimum distance (clearance) do you recon between the filter pod base and the bottom of can?
Have read of a 30mm min design clearance rule between the filter outside faces and its box/can inside profile (for effective flow/filtration).

Sounds like she is drawing real well. Interesting, with my procharge stage 3 h/f turbo (max B 26psi) 3" induction to turbo (IC stock size) got spool sound/real hoot, now with JT cooler 600x300x76mm core the induction is quiet as, does draw of course but no spool sound of note. Pulls well, just need to mod further.

More boost and a snorkel will all help amplify the noise.

Along as it can put you back in the seat and hold it there mate. Then happy days, sound like a good result.

I worked hard and got rid of my resonance (noise) from the cooler under load/higher boost, must say I do like to hear the snorkel drawing.

I run the Radius Snorkel, I bought the 4inch ram head local for around $60 too.... My air box is the FATZ box.
69698

As for the price difference in snorkels. My guess is that the FATZ snorkel has hidden welds. More time and care is need in this. My Radius snorkel you can see where the joins are. Doesn't bother me though.

Mark, have been looking at the Fatz Fab pod air box, assume U are still running this mate.

Fatz tell me that only mod needed is to cut radiator cowl slightly and no need to move the aux battery tray for their air box to drop in. Is that what you found?

Could you measure the box length for me and how much clearance from bottom of pod filter to the air box base (inlet face)?

Are they good to maintain and seal well?

Hey John, i would also seriously consider Millweld for airbox and snorkel i know i always spruke his stuff but cannot fault it at all and such good service and very reasonably priced. He did a totally custom jobbie on mine for the snorkel and airbox with ducting right up to the turbo and couldn't be happier with it. Give him a buzz see what he reckons not sure what he's got on the shelf, might have to drop it off with him for a couple of days but sure he can work his magic.

Thanks guys, do like Millweld box also, was a bit concerned with the snorkel flexi duct but see now it can be solid pipe mod. With box, was looking for proven H/F design as running higher end boost (need >600CFM). Will ring thru to Mill and see what the go is and he may have some results I can look at.. Had Mill do may rear bar at Mansfeild 5-6 yrs ago as it was one of the first new GU body shape builds. Like his work, and he can draw on a lot of experience. Do also like ability to easily observe Fatz air box contents and provides 1180 CFM flow(as quoted).

I run a Fabwitz sys (box/induction piping) but looking for possible improvement low down torque 4&5th. Fabwitz has offered to take back air box and I make dollar contribution for supply SS 4" snorkel (fwd face/safari ram hd) and swap pipe from box to turbo. Understand they do pipe to turbo for Millweld box also..

What boost / approx pwr you both running with your TDs?

Yeah I just had to trim the radiator cowl and that was it. If I had my time again I would have gone a radius fab fox that uses the flat panel filter. I think the air flow would be more even through the entire filter. But this requires the aux battery to be shifted back a bit.

Yeah the LS1 panel box (panel type designs) are considered up there with high flow attributes. Seriously gave the LS1 some serious thought, but not keen on shifting battery tray (min 20mm) and have a number of elec pwr feed rotary switches that also need moving. Just too much.

I have also heard there is 30mm min clearance rule eg: need to have 30mm min clearance between any of the filter effective surface and the container inside faces (box or cyl) that it is housed in.

Also looking at these also $340 w/o fiter. Uses 150mm long pod K&N. Looking at options.

I also bought a filter sock. Catches a lot before it enters the filter, without affecting air flow to a point where it matters. I did see a comparison vid somewhere, with sock vs no sock for air flow restrictions and it was virtually nothing. I also bought a spare pod filter from the same guys as it was half the price landed of what Fatz were asking.

Yeah it goes over the filter itself. Goes on dry. The mesh is super fine. I found the filter is cleaner when I change it out every 5k service. Makes cleaning the filter easier too.

See if Donaldson make an Ultraweb version of the filter you are running. Better quality paper media is used in it. Probaby wont last any longer but the filtration capabilities are better.

Good link Mark. Problem here is that I run dust daily unless wet roads. In my case use sock over snorkel and give it a shake or wash out.

The B series (non turbo of course) diesel in my SWB cruiser, had Donaldson cylindrical filter can on guard with their clear cyclonic pre filter on top. Great job.

Best for catching grass hoppers etc and the dust and just undo and tap out. Would use same pre filter if was considered suitable for turbo diesel application. Any ideas anyone?

You mean a precleaner? A 4inch one is good up to 340cfm. They do one called Topspin. Same thing but with a propeller type inside it.

Good for up to about 400cfm, not sure what this equates to in Patrol language though. Both are very effective at catching dust before it enter the filter box. Sold heaps of precleaners and quite a few top spins in my time.

Valid points Mark, wet dirty sock would certainly not breath too well and with a snow blanket she would just choke up. Guess the drain in the air box with tap open (millweld) would prevent drowning but put the plug in if going for a drink crossing. Yeah not sure if all snorkels can be rotated rearwards. Something for me to think about. on the fly mod fit (90 Deg extended elbow).

You mean a precleaner? A 4inch one is good up to 340cfm. They do one called Topspin. Same thing but with a propeller type inside it.
https://www.donaldson.com/content/dam/donaldson/engine-hydraulics-bulk/literature/north-america/air/F111382-ENG/TopSpin-HD-Air-Intake-Precleaner.pdf

Good for up to about 400cfm, not sure what this equates to in Patrol language though. Both are very effective at catching dust before it enter the filter box. Sold heaps of precleaners and quite a few top spins in my time.

Yeah 340CFM is the limiting factor, need up around 600CFM so no good. Just carry spare pod.

Had an old mate down from Cairns last winter for a quick blast over Matlock area when a blizzard came through. Forward facing only ram design and his Cape York dust sock was the only thing that got him home with constant defrosting off. Still much better than ice/sleeting up the entire airbox like a block!

I just turn my Ram head around if needed mate. For the other 99.5% of the time the Ram Head makes it sooo much nicer to live with.

Also love millie special drain tap, seems to work well.

Just completed dinner phase, lost the thread drift. Must say recon 4" snorkel with fwd(ram hd) or rear facing would provide for minimal difference in eng performance (TD or CRD), but am certain the noise generated from rear facing would be the cause of unwanted questioning re: the value of the mods,,,Also prefer the quieter option (happy campers) and spin my hd when needed.

Rossco, Going to have a chat with Mill tomorrow, missed him today and was wondering what ram head you ended up with and also want to turn it rewards.

What build specifics can you advise me of for discussion with Mill, eg: the ram head and snorkel compatibility. Prefer recessed snorkel and also do a solid SS duct thru along inner guard for snorkel. Currently run 3" SS pipe to turbo inlet with MAF sensor port in place, of which should be able to be retained with the use of a silicon joiner. Interested in air box/snorkel combo.

Any advise is appreciated. If a good outcome, I will do a run to Mansfield for install.

Hey John, snorkel head I bought beforehand from a truck place and is 4 in but don't know what brand it is tho. Mill uses the safari 3.5 inch head and fits inside the tube which i do kinda like. A bit controversial tho with some schools of thought saying it won't drain properly in heavy rain I did ask mill and he said if you utilize the drain be puts in it's not a problem at all. The drain in mine works a treat i reckon have driven in crazy storms and just open the trap the next day and all good.

Reckon if you nut it out in the day together he'll be able to work with whatever setup you want. Looking at Daz @ Muskis snorks really do like the recessed look the radius ones are very nice i reckon but think he could do something similar. Actually just thinking MBs is really good and recessed and that's a millweld.

I have a 4" Donaldson forward facing snorkel head on my SS snorkel. I don't think they look as 'finished' as the Safari, however are very strong and branch proof, it slides on the outside of the tube and drains externally. Its a bit more work in the fabrication though to get the head sitting vertical though. Noise wise its pretty quiet but you can hear it sucking when the revs get up.

Yes, and to MB point, the airbox does fill up pretty quickly with bugs and crap, but the engine is also drawing a lot of air as well I guess.

Yeah Rossco, Mill does GU recessed, Safari do the 4" hd but if Mill does not carry I will pick one up. Will do rotating ram head, but must say in the 15 yrs of running fwd facing snorkels never needed to rotate them. Then again not much snow or convoy driving but good to have in case. Do like his drain set up.

Phil, recon both ram heads would do the job fine, profile a bit different and the drain slots on the outside drain the water ingress surprisingly well and yes as long as they are not blocked. But heavy rain, may open the tap as Rossco mentioned. I have stage 3 h/f turbo with safari snorkel and does like to draw the air thru, one main reason for upgrade and do not mind the throaty sound under load with revs up as I can hear that all is happy.

Will post here. Millweld prefer to use 'Flex Duct' to run thru inner guard void to connect their SS snorkel (solid pipe) to air box. I prefer to use a solid SS 4" pipe section but Mill considers it is too labor intensive and room is limited, especially with recessed snorkel, Yes plenty of manufactures of 4" snorkels do use solid piping right thru with silicon joiners/bends.

My question is, has any one had experience with using the "flex duct" mat'l and how have you found its suitability and serviceability?
.

Seems fine on mine John mate, 2 years fitted now. Must be near impossible to run solid all the way inside the guard and out again on my recessed version. All in all it’s not exposed to UV or engine bay heat either.
I would imagine that all snorks have to flexy or elbow join their airbox’s inside somehow so 2 joints only ever either way you go.

Good Mark, the material is standing up to it then, thanks.

Yeah, near impossible to run one piece all the way w/o lot of panel beating I would think. Most use a second solid pipe section along inside guard, but use two connector/joiners of type (5 clamps), instead of only 2 if running flexy duct from snorkel thru to air box (so bonus there). Had a good chat with Mil yesterday, recons only take a day and may fit in before end of yr.

Lot of good info here lately gents, on intake and snorkels... Forum community at its best.
This has been my #1 watched thread since Darren began his upgrade. I've got the green light to go the BorgWarner just like his, but the intake was a grey area for me so, I'm snipping all the info for when I eventually bite the bullet. Which I'm aiming for Feb 19.

For me thus far, recessed black SS with a ram head.
Air box, I have room to play with since i dont have a battery there so... I'll have a few options I hope.

Hoidge, Have a look at Radius Fab.
There LS1 panel filter has terrific flow and has good reputation. Would of gone that way but too much stuff under bonnet to move. Normally need to shift battery tray approx 20mm rearwards. If you do not intend to use that space check it out. Personnel preference, is to use sealed lead acid battery so I do not stow battery in veh cab.

Thanks.
That LS box looks like the go. Quick google and a read across several forums reveals that panel type is least restrictive.
My mate pointed out that , there is always LS1 radius fab units popping up on FB market. People have bought and realised they wont fit due to the battery. I'm tempted to snap one up, which will save a bit of coin and a wait directly from the fabricators. Otherwise, I'll just buy the complete combo from them and will source the ram locally.

I was leaning towards the radius SS unit. I have seen Mudskis and it means business. I already have a Safari snorkel, so the cut on the panel left after fitting the SS is minor.

Hodge, Checked out his web page the other day and he is fitting a see thru panel in lid for 200 series landcruiser airbox ($750). Get a visual of filter. Must say though it is the down stream eg: cleaner side of filter but nice touch and you would see a discoloration as dirt accumulates.

Hey mate they are not pages as such. Just people putting thing up for sale on FB market. And sometimes the fatz boxes come up.

I like the clear view of the filter panel.. looks neat instead of just a stainless steel lid.

Now understood, social media (FB) is pretty new to me. Thanks, search came up with "FB Market Place"...getting better..haha

With Radius Fab, have communicated thru his FB page (Richie, I think), waiting on some pics showing filter clearance (not yet arrived) so think he is pretty busy. Good sign.

Early on there was reports of the panel filter failing and getting sucked into induction pipe, pretty rare and think it is now supported much better and problem may have gone away.
Fatz Fabrication do a LS box as well but use a K&N pod filter:

I had the kettle dynoéd at Dieseltec last week. Geez Andy is different person to deal with.... Anyhow, he spent the day trying different tunes and this is what he came up with.
76897

He came to the conclusion that a Garret GT3071 is too big for a TD42. The turbo starts making boost later in the rev range than what should be for a TD. As this has been the way since I have had it, I don't know any different. I just drive it in the power range it delivers. Boost down low would be nice, but I cannot justify spending more just for that.
He suggested if I wanted to have lower boost to get a 2863 or Similar. Meh! I just want to get rid of it now.

But atleast now there very minimal smoke. It was a choo choo train before.....
