And Wreckers !, i know they have to make money, but the thieves want to charge near 80-90% of new prices, no wonder insurance wrote my car off, as ive been finding out, some of the wreckers that have web sites with pictures dont seem to update them, so half the cars they show on-line, dont even exsist, so this means i have to ring around.


Im going to strip the inside of the car out tomorrow, and will most likley end up just ordering a "brand new" roof skin from Nissan, not cheap ,but only $50 more than wreckers want for a roof !

Another LHF gaurd is what i really need, (ill pay more for white) i need this fitted so i can see if my door repair is good or not.

Thanks for careing guys, but I'm not that stupid, the first strap was trying to tow a mate out ov a bog off proper rated recovery hooks and the strap snapped instantly( brand new strap), the log on the other hand was choked in the strap and the strap was a bit worn and using a rated rec hook again and the strap snapped about hold way along!! Don't be fooled by drag chains, they are generally not rated and can also snap as I have seen before, my best option is to get a black snake and not use the common snatch strap!!

Or line up a smaller log, if you have a choice :-)

Do you reckon a chain around the tree would cope better with abrasion etc than a strap? I guess then it would need to be chain all the way to the vehicle.

Rated chains normally have a mark every few links - I agree that not all are rated. I bought one, gold anodised, from a produce store, that had specs listed on the bulk bucket, but the chain itself is plain. The ones I bought from Serafini Chains up here are marked.

Hey Guys,

I just bought a GQ and it's springs are badly sagged.

At the moment all it will be doing is some light 4x4ing and touring so the slight raise some standard (non sagged) springs give should be all i need for now.

Will also look at slightly raised aftermarket springs. (2" max)

They will need to be out of a low k GU, that hasn't done any heavy towing/touring.

I'm in Perth and can come and pick them up at a time that suits you.

I am chasing the mounting brackets to mount the driver side 3rd row dicky seat. I have the seat but the brackets are missing. I need these to get a roadworthy on the car.

Alternatively, if you are in the Canberra area and can loan them for the duration of an inspection it would be appreciated.

Mate, I thought the fixing bracket is fixed inside to the top of the wheel arch. Or is it the bracket to latch the seat in?

I'd be surprised if they weren't just a straight bolt on job mate ... mine have headrests, so if at some stage over the coming week or so you have some time, I could slip over and we could measure up the bases so you at least know what you're up against if they don't fit.

No joy but I asked the guy about the GUs on their site - got all excited thinking there's got to be a bracket off at least one of those wrecks but got the same answer as you. And yes, the Wrecker pic situation is very frustrating to say the least, ive rang twice, and spoke to 2 different people over 3 weeks asking about panels from the exact same white GU (in the ad Yendor posted), no parts are available in white, yet the ad showing the 99 white GU wagon, is "still" there today, read the ad, its very descriptive about that one car (car 786), so its not just some general we've got GU parts ad, but ring for avilability first, its, here is the car in our yard, "call for price"............ if no panels (including the roof) are available in white, the car is gone, 3 weeks is long enough to update the site !


Honestly, all this leads me to conclude, that they, (Wreckers in general, and this is only one example) are happy to blatantly advertise pictuers of parts they simply do not have, in any other retail industry this would "surely" be classed as FALSE ADVERTISING, and as far as im aware is against the law for a reason, but more than that, it quite simply just PI$$ES PEOPLE OFF !


Anyway, i opted to spend 15% more on what the wreckers wanted to charge, and buy "brand new" genuine panels from Nissan !

I would still be interested in any white GU panels if anyone comes across them at a good price, be good to have for the next "incident" :wink:

You make a very good piont mate, it's false advertising but more than that it's just down right misleading to customers, or potential customers, and treats them with contmept & disrespect. It's a rude practice & it's either intentional or laziness - either way it's very unhelpful, particuarly for a bloke in your situation.

Lol, good question flemj & I'd be the last person to ask on colour matching. Be impossible to tell from the photos without knowing the colour code of the paint that guy used. White unfortunatley isn't white - must a thousand variations of white.

Hi all,

As I continue to do more work on the GU I keep finding things that the corrugations have busted.

Has anyone (maybe someone who has built a comp truck from a wagon) got a high mount brake light for a GU Wagon?

They have two bolts holding a light coloured moulding in all of which is hidden by a trim piece. My trim piece is fine, the tags on the light coloured bit that it bolts up by have separated from the body of the light on both sides.

Hmm ok I have thought about the Duramax 6.6l whilst researching the Cummins, but I crossed the Chevy's off my list a while back now after alot off phone calls, web search and talking to other chev 6.5l owners. The Duramax do sound very powerful but all the electrics and emission controls on the motor turn me off eg. egr system, engine management systems etc etc...

I've had enough troubles with those things on my 3l. It's are same I've heard a negative comment as this is the first one I've heard about them! Just takes me back to square one with the goods and bass of the Motors I've been looking for. Maybe I should just get an LS3 Petrol V8 installed!?

If dollars aren't a problem, you could try PatrolDocta, they do a nice air box modelled on the ZD30 in stainless, it takes the ZD30 genuine Nissan air filter. I have one fitted to my GQ and I swear by it.

you don't have airbags to worry about, so compliancing is not an issue.

I am after a factory rear sway bar disconnect unit as mine has broken the end off.
If anyone has a shell that is a parts car that I could buy from that would be great.
I dont the cable if there is a damaged cable one out there so it doesn't matter if it is a LWB or short.

Have you tried pulling the top off & using a points file on the contacts as I done this with mine over 12mths ago still working fine today..
This maybe a quick fix to get you round till you get 1..

I considered conversion to a TD42 but too many parts required (I love the gearbox in the 2.8 - a much nicer box that won't fit with the 4.2) and too much work to change and the 4.2 really needs a turbo. So I would like to locate a NEW RD28T engine.
Anybody have any idea if such is available, where and how much.
p.s. I want the RD28T not the RD28TDi, that is the one with the hydraulic tappets rather than the one with buckets and shims (and too much electronics for my liking). Prefer the one with the vacuum pump on the valve cover rather than on the back of the alternator but that's not so important.

I recently rebuilt my RD28T, but before doing it, just for arguments sake, I rang Nissan. You can buy a brand spanking bare motor out of the box, for around $9600 I think it was. They had one in the warehouse in Melbourne too. I did post it on a thread back in Dec/Jan but it will take me ages to find it!

Just gettign the rwc at the garage atm. Got postponed anyhow as decided to take it to a different garage instead. ;)
I don't need a seat for rwc (hopefully) as mine is ADR approved, and the steering wheel i was told wont be roadworthy cause it didn't have padding, but then i read that only applies to vechials that are made after 1995 and conform to a different standard. will have to work out the guards and flaps though :)

Yeah i know nissannewby but i'm on a very tight budget man the misses doesnt want me to spend anything at all on it, but when you can not fit a normal can of coke between the top of the wheel and the guard you have to find ways around it. I was think of buying some blocks to correct the sag but the springs dont look to good anyway, so i just asked the question and hey presto i got some guys offering some help thank you

Nobody has asked yet if you are carrying weight or standard truck.
Factory springs are soft and will sag very quickly. Mine were stuffed in under 6 months. Ring Zordos I am sure John will have some behind his shed that are better than factory and probably free.

You can buy the chassis mounts from Nissan for about $80 I think. One of mine got welded on crooked and have been having lots of vibration issues.

Not to hard, 2 drop downs from collumn that hold a pivot point and bar. flexijoints bolted to the pedals and a rod going to the bar. Got hand controls in my dads patrol.

Owen1200, i have a set of draws and a fridge in the back but the main sag come along when i hooked up my jayco outback caravan so in the long term i will be getting a heavy duty 2" lift for it when i can save enough and the boss lets me buy it

standard springs are designed to take the kids to school. If you are carrying a couple hundred kgs in the back plus another couple hundred kgs of trailer, it will be a waste of time getting standard springs.
There are always people with heavier springs they don't want, and if you ring Zordos Suspension, I am sure John will have some half knackered 2" springs laying around, which will allow your truck to ride level but also carry a bit of extra weight.
the other option is airbags, however, you will lose a little up-travel and therefore not my recommendation.

Also, GQ springs will fit as well. GQ springs are the same, except the GQ weighs less, so they sit up a bit. 2" springs off a GQ qill be 1.5" in a GU, and you may not have to change the shocks right away.

There is a bull bar on ebay that has been in a head on accident.
This bar was on my GQ and was replaced by the insurance company and was to be destroyed.
It is not a ARB bar and steps as advertised and appears some dodgy dealing has gone on from the local ARB dealer.

I would keep away from the bar unless it has been engineered to be ok. Which I couldn't get done thats why it was replaced.

Would hate to see a Patrol with a family hanging of a winch cable when the bar comes apart.

In case you did not know, there are differences across all of the series for rear bumpers, so you will need a full backing frame and bolts.

hey guys i have a spare gu rd28 engine sitting in my shed thati got spare when purchasing my patrol, it has the head off the block as head was chaged around as i was told, was told by previos owner that it had around 250xxxkms on it, all that is needed is new head gasket and head bolted back up, willing to swap for a set of 35' muddies on sunraysias with reasionable tread or open to offers as is a waste just sitting in my shed! located in VIC 3840. cheers scott

X2 mate, Factory springs are fairly average and your sig line says you have BW drawers and a 60lt fridge, do yourself and your car a favour and grab some HD springs, you can get them in Standard height if you want to stay there but there is a significant difference between factory and aftermarket mate and worth every cent.

Manual tranny, LWB 2001 GUII. Its the bracket that is bolted from the tranny bracket to the exhaust about mid way down the exhaust. Mines snappa'roonied.:clapping:
