I was talking to one of my pommy customers today, he came in while the cricket was on. He said they only really have two small problems with the team. They can't bat and they can't bowl, but if they can sort those little problems out they'll probably do alright.

The whole walking thing is crap.
In my 25 plus years of playing competitive cricket I have never walked. I have been on the wrong end of that many shocking umpiring decisions that I take the good with the bad and even then the odd one or two that go in your favour never make up for all the bad calls that don't.
And this pre-occupation with checking no balls after a wicket.....WTF? Total rubbish. The umpire should be paying attention to every ball and they are not. I have seen a number of replays of balls bowled (Australian and English) that were no balls during an innings that were never called. It promotes lazy umpiring. I say ban checking for no balls unless referred by a batsman.
I'd be curious to know whether the average number of no balls called in a game has changed. I'd be willing to bet it has decreased on average and we have the referrals to blame because the umpires just don't bother watching the front foot any more.

One of my great peeves with cricket at the moment, see it all the time. It pisses me off that umpires don't bother with no balls unless there is a wicket. The ICC need to do some thing about it because it's wrong, a no ball is a no ball. Just like any other referral, it should be up to the batsman not the umpire to ask for a no ball review as the umpire should be calling them as they see them.
The umpires are getting lazy.

If I was an Ump that's the first thing I'd look at "a front foot no ball"

It's the first thing they should be watching for because it affects everything thereafter. Extra run, bowl it again etc.
If there not going to call it, what's the point of having an umpire in the middle? Dumbasses are doing themselves out of a job.
All the talk is of umpiring decisions costing matches. What if a team lost by 2 runs and there were no no-balls called on the last innings? Do we go back over every delivery to find them? I bet they'll be there.......

Johnson and Harris are both a bit over 30 but there's not much respite with Pattinson, Cummings and Starc (among many fast bowlers) coming through. If they can stay injury free, look out!
Batting is more the issue for us.

You are right though Fracster, I think the Aussie top order still needs to get their shi.t together before the team is really considered to be back in form. Our bowling has been 1st class, and the tail has wagged, and done a bloody terrific job of saving more than one innings in this series. Just about all the Aussie batsmen have managed runs at some stage, but not in a manner that is consistent enough yet for them to claim the World No 1 jersey again….yet! Bailey needs to show some consistency, and Watson too for that matter. Clarke has skippered well, but has played some dreadful shots to give his wicket away. Rogers looks great, and so does Smith. Aussie cricket is picking up again since Lehman took over. No doubt about it.

fracster
4th January 2014, 11:26 PM
I think a lot of the plaudits should go to Lehman to be honest, he seems to have made the team hungry again, proud to play for the country and seemingly enjoying playing cricket. Things that seem to have been missing for a while prior to his appointment.

BigRAWesty
5th January 2014, 05:22 AM
Lehman has what is needed to make an awesome coach. He clicks with players and also pits in the hours.

Not sure if I can think of a better all around cricketer than Kallis. He was a cricket machine and I'm thankful he won't be playing us in a couple of months. He's put us the sword many times with bat or ball.....or both.
