I guess the time has to come soon as to decide the tracks we are going to take and stop overs etc so we have an idea on the fuel we will need the supplies we will need etc.
I am happy to help with this but all I have is maps I have never done it.... First hand knowledge is hard to beat here!!

its looming up quickly now once it hits 100days its on the down hill slide
we will need finale numbers shortly and where from and where to meet either mt dare or dalhousie springs

rottodiver
2nd February 2014, 01:47 PM
I reckon Dalhousie, so that way people can get there earlier if they want for relaxation and swimming etc... It is only 5 months away, I would assume most people would know if they are going or not by now...
Maybe reset the pole so we can vote again( is it possible for the pole to show results of who voted so we know for sure)

Yes Dalhousie it is so anyone early can sit in the springs and relax.

Here is the current Poll and most recent thread. The numbers are a little lighter but still a good group and be keen for a few more to jump on..

Hey Kelly, The forum is meeting at dalhousie springs on the 1st July but a small group will be meeting at Bridsville a few days before(date yet to be confirmed) for the double crossing.
Hopefully some banana benders will jump in and let you know which way they're travelling

The poll has been removed and a new one added to get some latest stats.

Please vote above to get some true numbers.

This thread will need to be bumped multiple times over the new next few weeks so people can see that we have started again and can vote so feel free to keep people updated with this.

Bought this tent on the weekend and slept in it on Saturday night, love it so far.

Don't forget to water it down and scotch guard the seams ,
as for a tent you cant get a better tent IMO for ease of set up.
only down side is it takes up a bit of room.

Picture is of a 3 piece sand flag made from K-mart 13mm tent pole kit
I used to make solid 13mm fibre glass sand flags

In all honesty guys roughly how much fuel money do you think we'll need? Would $1500-2000 cover it?

In all honesty guys roughly how much fuel money do you think we'll need? Would $1500-2000 cover it?

So Winnie, some maths for you to consider about the fuel costs.

If you do say a 5000km trip. (Melbourne to Mt Dare Hotel is 2050kms each way plus 1000kms for play and touring)

If your average say 16lt/100 for the entire trip? (probably 13lt/100 for the bulk and 18 to 20lt/100kms in the desert?) you will use a total of 800lts of fuel for the trip.

say of that 500lts at an average of $1.60 per lt =$800 & 300lt @$2 per lt average is $600 + $800 and it will be around $1200 to $1500 of fuel door to door.

Hope that helps mate.

Typical eastern stater's... us 'gropers will travel 1,000 K's just to find some shade for smoko.
1,500 if we want shade plus no red effin' dirt.
I still can't understand why some people don't like us exporting that shit... 50 years on and we have more than we started with.

P.S. I have risen from a 90% definite to a 99% definite so save me a good spot at Dalhousie

I normally work on $2.00 a litre, to cover any unforseen incidents, even a spare jerry of fuel as well.
I take it the Simmo its self is the longest without fuel. Some fuel can be $2.40 plus depending.
This link may help in figuring out how much fuel you'll need.

Doing more research Ian@Mt Dare recommends 150ltr for diesel and 200ltr for petrol
I would still take a jerry with 165ltr total capacity in mine.
so about 5 tankfulls for the entire trip @ $250 -$350 a fill

More info for you all, only 1100 sand dunes to go.
TLCCV just did a crossing and lots of cars were getting damage from Big red.
Most diesels were getting 20/100 and petrol up around 25/100.
tyre pressures were 25-30 psi
Tyre problems were negligible

Thanks 3d.

Yes Big Red can be a challenge for some. There are a number of ways up it and certainly the most difficult when I was there last could see vehicle damage. There was another 4 ways up though!

The link you posted has been done a few times and is already in the first post of the thread but thanks for the bump.

Here is a link to a thread about fuel consumption. 150lt in a TD42 heavy, 110lts in a ZD30 light, 210lt in a 4.8pet running fast

those fuel figure seem right with todays 4x4s just remember to figure in a safety margin of 20%
Not many jerries of diesel will need to be taken, just out of interest is there any kind of pre trip
inspection or its up to everyone to have their 4x4 in tip top trip condition As it get closer you need a list of who bringing what.
We did a trip once and ended up with 15 camp ovens and 8 chains saws for 10 ppl, it was ridiculus Oh yeah and 6 x 2 burner stoves lmfao

re the tyre pressure i would have thought 25 psi for the majority of the trip and 10psi for big red would be what i would go for, 30 psi will wreck the tracks more than they already are??

That was from a TLCCV trip report , but I would think you need to
adjust to suit the conditions, hard sand or hot fluffy sand

Yeah i did the Madigan Line at 25psi. i thought it was perfect for a heavy loaded car. 30 is silly. somewhere between 20 and 25psi hot pressure would be perfect i think.

Hey 3D.

When I did the Madigan line I had sandwich ziplock bags and took samples of sand from stages across the desert. Unfortunately I started the sample taking from near the middle rather than the start. The change in sand colour is extraordinary. Made a Great school Project for Zach when he got home.

In line with that request and the fact that there are so many pages to wade thru...

Would it be a good idea to have a "logistics" thread stating the timings and place vehicles are leaving from, exactly where the meet up will be, etc. and maybe ask to limit the posts to attendees to get their poo in a row or is it ducks in a pile

Trying to sort that out from this thread alone is impossible.

Hi ET, the plan was for us to leave Friday 26 th that is Rotto diver and me and going via the great central rd to the rock, and meeting at Dalhousie
springs other than that nothing concrete.

Hi mate,

Yeah, we're lucky as we can chat at the Club etc but even the WA thread on here is over 11 pages now.

At this stage I may be coming in from Vic or NSW or maybe even Qld as I may head east first to pick up a Camper Pod I have been drooling over otherwise I'll probably hook up with you guys.
The permits to travel the Great Central are online jobbies so no dramas there.

So who from Vic will be leaving when? Roofy is heading up earlier, looks like other than him it's just Rossco, AB, Mudrunner and myself going from Vic? Let's organise a convoy boys. First of all when does all your leave start? Mine is booked from the 23rd of June but am probably roughly looking at leaving on the 19th which is a Thursday.

I'm easy Winnie and will work with what others need to do.

Chatting to Dazz today and we will start a new thread on each convoy and ensure it does not get punished by the wrath of our dribble so its all relevant info for those coming and planning, etc.

Hiya blokes,

I am mainly curious on 'rough' itineraries on getting there and when people anticipate arriving and how long people want to bum around Dalhousie before launching across the Simpson.

I reckon Dalhousie and Mt Dare will get inundated by attendees of the Bash the closer that event gets.

Could maybe do that in a single thread but happy to go with the flow

Hey ET the Meetup is planned for Daulhousie on the 1st July. Given the size of the group we can be a little flexible but basically get there when you want and we roll on the 1st. If you want to get there a day or 2 before and sit and relax then all good. We will be done and dusted before that next wave comes in.

Given a previous post from you that your not sure on your location we are planning a double crossing. Meeting in Birdsville first and maybe heading Sotuh and doing the Rig rd East West. Head to Mt Dare for fuel then back to Dalhousie for beer.

If your interested in meeting in Birdsville watch this space bud. Originally I planned a double crossing to Meetup with all the QLDers coming down, head across the desert with them then Meetup for the National meet at Dalhousie.

That would make a great round trip Birdsville to Birdsville.
Given a bloke would want to camp up at Dalhousie for a couple of days to rehydrate and tell lots of lies before departing on the 1st... when do you feel you would be departing Birdsville?

Yo!

What size and how do they usually attach to the pole?
Also, do they have to be bright like a bright orange or would white with a np logo stand out enough?

bachelor lyf!

Roofy made a typo mate, right link is http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/home

Hey Darren, how long before the 1st of July (which is the official date for the meet at Dalhousie) do you plan on leaving home? I've got the whole week prior to it off, and have to account for the drive to Birdsville and across the desert.

That's a good question Winnie, thinking about it now mate it will be 3 good days in the car to Birdsville. Then 1/2 day in Birdsville before heading out. 3 days to cross, day at Dalhousie to get to mt dare for fuel and Meetup. 7 days mate.

More info for you all, only 1100 sand dunes to go.
TLCCV just did a crossing and lots of cars were getting damage from Big red.
Most diesels were getting 20/100 and petrol up around 25/100.
tyre pressures were 25-30 psi
Tyre problems were negligible

http://www.exploroz.com/TrekNotes/Deserts/Simpson_Desert_French_Line.aspx

150lt in a TD42 heavy, 110lts in a ZD30 light, 210lt in a 4.8pet running fast

http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/100929/1st_time_simpson_desert_crossing.aspx

G'day,

This trip sounds existing. Is there an itinerary outlining the proceedings for this year's "Meet in the Middle" run? My understanding is that the group meets at Dalhousie Springs on 1 July and that from there a crossing to Birdsville is planned. I'm keen to participate, but would like to get more information. As I'm in Alice Springs, are there any other participants from the NT? I would prefer to join a convoy as this will be my first trip into the Simpson Desert.

Hi mate,

The Meetup is on 1st July and we will be heading out of Dalhousie. You should have little trouble getting to Dalhousie from The Alice via Mt Dare for fuel. Heading down the Ghan Trail from memory then across to Mt Dare. The roads are simple and big wide Dirt roads with little trouble to deal with.

If you can hook up with someone would be great but without company you will be find making your own way. The Desert does not really start until Dalhousie mate.
