hi,
can u tell me is this family oriented trip and how much cash we looking at

rottodiver
12th April 2013, 09:59 PM
Yes, definitely family orientated, the actual crossing will be anywhere between 400 and 700 km totally dependant on what is organised later down the track (higher fuel economy than normal)and obviously the cost of getting to the star point and back home from the end) you could work the distances out....there are heaps of info online about average fuel economies for the crossing. (We are coming from Perth and taking 3 weeks to get there do the crossing and get home).will be a trip you would never forget.

When you think about it your only really expense is fuel. Your going to eat weather on the road or at home.. I find myself eating less when on the road.

500 to 1000 on fuel pending where you are driving to/from plus setting up your rig but most people have it pretty sorted it doesn't need to be a monster stock 4wds do this route. More just a few spares remember the more you carry the more strain on the vehicle and the more fuel used. Tyre pressures and correct speed should see everyone through.

Yeah I'd be swapping the tank out and taking the Gu if you have it. Or keep an eye out over the next 12 months for another LR tank for the Gu.

When I did the Madigan Line I was going to swap out the LRA tank from the GQ but picked up another second hand tank from a GQ for $350 a month before the trip and now have a Long Range tank in both cars! Awesome.

I'm just having second thoughts on bringing the camper and concerned about 20 other camper trailers in our group too?

MudRunnerTD
27th April 2013, 06:58 PM
Yeah it's been done many times with camper trailers AB. Campers must be rated OFFROAD Style campers though please folks! No 6x4 builders trailers please. You will be asked to leave it behind as we can't drag it if its knackered.

We will be splitting into groups of 10 or less and ideally have a mix of trailers and non trailers. Maybe have a group of early risers leaving at 8am and a second group leaving at 10am or something? Then Meetup for camp each night!

Maybe?

Short answer Healy is No mate. It is not just a set of springs that makes a trailer an Offroad Trailer. Bigger axles. Bigger bearings. Heavier draw bar. Heavier chassis. Stronger trailer.

This great country is littered with 6x4 trailers that had bigger wheels fitted and fell apart in the middle of No Where and were abandoned. When it breaks we then have to figure out what to do with all your gear as we all already full ;)

Pack light. Buy an OzTent or a much better trailer. Sorry mate. Just the way it is. Got to keep It real!

rottodiver

Hmmmm, decisions decisions, to bring the camper or not !
With this many people going there is as much a risk of cars breaking down as there is campers( less likely the campers if they are full off road) ..
I really don't know what to do, a year to think about it I guess!

Seriously thinking now of leaving the Camper at home and travelling light in the OzTent. I have the peaked sides and the rear and side awning on the car and am thinking of doing the East West crossing first with the QLD boys and the extra fuel for dragging the camper both ways will be Huge!

There are also a couple of alternative ways for me to get to Dalhousie from the South East up through the Desert too and No Camper will be a Blessing i think?

The wife is OK with the OZ Tent. Not a bad setup. That Tent that Cuppa has for sale though! Damn that thing is Huge! and packs flat and would go on top of the spare tyre on the roof with ease!

yeah i agree, towing my camper would see probably an extra $400 to $600 worth of fuel at least, if not more given the price of fuel in the outback. At the end of the day the camper is just a Bed and somewhere to carry a heap of stuff you can do without on a trip like this.

I have all the cooking gear i need to go remote and just need to sort out another option for carrying water as i had removed one of the back seats for the Madigan Line last year and that will not be an option this time.

Hay guys, just a thought. There seems a lot of guys who are rigging up for this trip as its the first big trip, me included..
So could we get the more experienced blokes throw together a list for us nubies of the must haves, the not so important but nice, and then the not really needed to save uneeded money wasting and weight..

Things like fuel capacity to work towards, recovery gear, bar work, oils etc

I know things like a good service, tyres ate a given.. and sand does wear rubber quite quick, so that needs to be kept in mind..

And I think we need to put I concrete a must.. I think every vehicle needs a solid recovery point, not the genuine ones.. this way everyone is on the same page and we know we are taking every possible precaution possible to make this trip as safe as possible..
I'm not saying everyone needs a point from td, (I hope you do support a true Aussie though) but at least a tow bar tongue shackle..

And put all this info into a closed thread for us nubies to refer to.. like I said ill leave it to you experienced guys.

These are things I've got planned to do before the trip

Remove body lift
Dual batteries
Drawers
Top mount intercooler
Long range tank
Water storage
New HD radiator

and hopefully a new (smaller) turbo

Hey Westy, RLI has a pretty comprehensive list of things to take in his Cape York trip thread. Theres pre check lists, first aid lists, etc. Have a peak you might find it useful
Fuel stop distances will vary and also consumption but bersides that the rest should be pretty good.

Wow Winnie I would not be thinking of dumping that turbo mate! And before you go planning a heap of cash outlay on stuff to cool the sweat girl is be booking it in for a decent tune mate! There is likely Nothing wrong with it other than a really junky tune mate!!!

Seriously mate! You probably won't need the radiator and could get away with tuning it without an intercooler at about 14psi and get a power gain and great temps. This should be your priority 1 before any other plans for your car take hold mate. Truly.

Winnie

I showed the dyno printout to Diesel-tec in Lilydale and they said they could fix it up a bit, get temps down a little and maybe a bit more power but he said it's probably not worth it and the turbo is too big for the application, which is exactly what Benny and Mat had already told me.

That looks like a good blog Kris. Interesting comments about the trailers too.

Note those from Qld looking to cross East West first, this crossing is a fair bit harder than West to East as the prevailing weather comes from the West and you are climbing the soft steep side of every Dune.

Going East West first was the clincher for me not taking the camper and going back to an OZtent.

Yeah if you have a look at my Madigan Line thread near the end you will see a pic of a 15lt round drum I carried on the roof for washing smalls. Worked great.

At the end of the day though we will be in the desert for 3 to 5 days in total assuming a couple of rest days to enjoy the company and everyone should be self sufficient for at least that period.

Remember that the luxuries all take water! Think about what you really need.

I took precooked rice and then heated it in a pan full of boiling water that I then used for dishes.

The toilet. Sort it out. A portapot is probably not going to work. A toilet seat on a chair is the go and dig and bury as to go.

Maybe a toilet tent which you could use for privacy and for a wash if and when you can. You can have a good wash with 2.5lts or water used wisely including washing your hair. If there are 4 of you though that's 10lts of valuable water. Baby wipes Rock!

You could leave it at Dalhousie springs and take the link road back after the crossing and pick it up...or do a double crossing and head back and pick it up. There might be a few WA guys heading back the other way, maybe have that chat in your planning thread.

Worth consideration. 5 to 8 days out of your trip in a tent is not a bad deal ;)

Trying to decide whether to bring the entire tribe.....wife and 3 kids (5,7 and 10yo)
The big thing is the amount of "stuff" required and water!! By my calculations 6 litres of water per person per day x 10 days equals 300 litres! That's a heck of a lot of weight before I even add 220+ litres of ULP. That's almost leaving me no weight to carry passengers.
Any thoughts?

drew mate theres water at dalhousie springs depending on which way we go to birdsville if the tele track
its approx 436ks 3or 4 days and maybe 12hours depending on what you want to see
you wont need 300l of water unless your bathing every night im hopeing to carry at least 80l to allow for a wash
dont leave your family at home they will benifit from the adventure of a lifetime
work out what the kids need then halve it to travel light

Yeah Drew this is a once in a life time mate! Can't leave them behind. You won't need anywhere near that much water mate.

When I did the Madigan Line I was away for 2 weeks and took 90 lts of water. 3x20lt Jerry's for dishes and cooking and 3x10lt casks from the supermarket for drinking.

I took precooked rice and heated it in a saucepan of boiling water that I then used to wash the dishes. Don't take dehydrated food you need to add water to like dry pasta. Cook it at home and cryovac it. Buy your meat in SA on the last day of civilisation and it will have a long used by date that will see you through the trip without freezing.

Bring the family mate, my wife Naomi and 2 kids 8yo boy and 3yo girl will be travelling with me. Can't wait. No trailer. You will work it out mate.

Hey Roofy,

You can buy precooked rice already to go in single meal portions from any supermarket relatively cheaply. only about $3 a meal it turns out to be (a Family Meal portion) so i did not even bother pre cooking my own at that price, i just bought enough for my trip.

I have a Cryovac Machine too and precooked a couple of Chicken curries and vacced them but the red meat i ended up buying the freshest i could and had stuff with 2 to 3 weeks in the Used by date. Sliced Ham in single serves and salami all come with a month or more of Used by date form the meat section.

We even stopped 2 days into the trip in SA and grabbed another couple of Meat portions while grabbing Vegies as i could not bring them from home and got stuff that i had on the last couple of nights in teh desert. Worked Great.

Shop smart and you can do it really simply and eat well.

Buy Bread on the last day of shops and that will last a couple of days then Wraps for the rest.

Hope to be sending a convoy from WA, too. Looking forward to it.

Been thinking about this after I was told off by Daz for saying I will not be coming and I need to have a long discussion with the one who should be obeyed?

One of my concerns which Daz says is not a problem is dual fuel.... the other is not so much the expense of the trip but the expense of preparation, trying to move house and of late am spending a bit on renovations plus what I had to spend after my stupid day in puddles.

I do wonder and was reading about people going in large groups and doubling up on tonnes of crap that was not needed... eg how many tools would you need to bring if everyone else was bringing tools?

I so want to do this trip , I do feel it is not everyday (for some of us) to get to the Simpson or other like destination?

I tried to flick through all the pages but kept getting distracted with talk of VB but will try and see if I can have a read through later...

Hey BA I have embedded that link on the first page top mate. Sorry for giving you a hard time mate but keen as buggery to have you and your family along on this one mate.

I think your fuel will be heaps mate.

As the time gets closer then we will start a section for this trip. All the meetup convoys can go there and a list of tools and parts will be started. I will have most things mate but a set of hoses and belts and a service before you go. Wear your BFGs and your in business mate

Jonathan you need to be there simple as that. Going in such a huge crew is a once in a lifetime thing I reckon. Looking into a new turbo for myself then an intercooler and new HD radiator and I'm ready, the rest are creature comforts.

If you're happy and you know it tap a post!

BigRAWesty
17th June 2013, 07:09 PM
For sure mate.. once closer I think we need to get serious with a good list of supplies and parts, and then split it over the group.
So you have a few spare 50mm shocks, they'll do as emergency for stock threw to 4" lift, but I'm doing radiator hoses and belts so, nothing wrong with them but just preventative maintenance so ill throw them in..

Nothing wrong with dual fuel.. my father inlaw has done the Simpson 4 times in his duel fuel 4.5ltr 80 series. He took 90 petrol and 70 gas, plus 2 jerry cans and never had an issue.. and only used one jerry can once as a precautionary..

So dont let that turn you off hay..

But yea, once closer we'll all sort it out.. still 13 months away..
Just make a realistic list of mods you want and aim for that. Anything extra is a bonus.. I'd love a 2nd tank setup, in reality ill probably just get my 140 main done and 2 jerry cans.

There is nothing wrong with it Drew, it's just the wrong turbo for my application, far too big and lazy. When it gets happening it's awesome but it's all too late, a smaller turbo would come on a lot earlier and improve everything!

2062kms from Melbourne to Dalhousie Springs, 436km for the crossing and 1909kms from Birdsville back to Melbourne. That's straight there and straight back in under 5000kms.
Those are all according to Google Maps.

Those kms come in at $1250 for me in normal conditions.

Winnie
17th June 2013, 08:41 PM
I reckon like Daz said if you had two full tanks at the start of the crossing and take a jerry just to be on the extremely cautious side you'll get by without a drama! My brother in law's old man has done the crossing in his dual fuel 100 series he said he took two jerry cans and did not need either of them.
