I am.. won't be a heli.. well maybe.. but will probably have a small glider we can strap a cam too.
Might be very useful. I reckon at the time you're going there will be every man & his dog travelling both ways across the Simpson. You could use a RC aircraft with cam to look over the dunes ahead for the 4wd's & bikes coming toward you without Cb's or flags. Seriously I reckon a lot of care will be needed as it'll be the busiest period & there's bound to be a few bozos who left their brain at home out there, & head ons on top of dunes aren't what anyone wants.

Righto, got off my ass and voted..
I went 'wouldn't miss it for the world' and 'travelling with sa crew' but it seams my vote only went the first option. If any?
But it looks a bit quite on the sa front so I might join the vics for the trip.. its the same k's either way weather I got north then west or west then north.

Mate at work is doing Birdsville next month, he just got delivered his meals. Look up gourmet happy camper meals. They are pre cooked meals which do no need to be refrigerated. They look nice too, all home made in Lindenow Vic. I will get some for sure.

Meet at Dalhousie on the 1st. Group up and Roll on the 2nd. The crossing could be done in 2 days but I was thinking 4 days with a day in the middle somewhere and not big days. It's a holiday.
Roll into Birdsdville on the 5th (Saturday) for a meal at the pub on Saturday night. Sounds great!

At this stage Chris I will probably take 3 weeks but that might change.
Keen to head up to Birdsville and travel East west with guys from QLD to the meetup and then back again (double crossing) then maybe head South West and spend a week in the Flinders Ranges maybe. Detour down through the little desert if there is time?
Open to a chat about it though mate. We should chat in the Victorian Planning thread maybe if there are others that are keen. Could be a few from other states keen to see the Flinders Ranges too so who knows?
How does that sound to you mate?

Bump.
And I just posted this in the QLD Meetup planning group
All good Macca, hope you can still make it mate.
To all the other guys your all more than welcome on this trip. As it gets closer things will start to become clear in relation to a plan.
At this stage there was some talk by a few that they may do a double crossing from QLD being that your on the wrong side of the desert. ;)
I intend to head up to Birdsville and Meetup with QLD members and do the double crossing too.
In relation the Camper Trailers? I have a Camper and will likely tow it to Birdsville and leave it there. Do the double crossing without the trailer using an OzTent then travel down through the Flinders Ranges in the Camper Trailer. I would encourage anyone thinking of towing a Trailer to think about doing the same thing. If you are adamant about towing a trailer then it MUST BE a Rated OFFROAD Trailer only! A 6x4 with 6 stud wheels is Not an OFFROAD trailer. I need to be Very Clear about this. There may well be a very big group and the Simpson Desert is littered with try hard trailers that simply should never have been taken out there. Everyone will be travelling heavy and a broken trailer will need to be abandoned and your gear either put on your roof or the roofs of others.
I would appreciate it if every effort was made to limit the camper trailers and then everyone is in the same boat.
Looking forward to this trip.
Cheers MR

If we plan to do flinders north to south then boarder track I honestly think that's a very full week, and busy. Could easily kill a week in the rangers, and the 2 day's On the track and a few down little desert.

Really not sure mate, I'm considering leaving it at birdsville and coming back for it later on. It just makes everything hard on the dunes and shiploads of wear and tear on the old camper.

Good idea. Saw a 4wd action DVD where they took campers through the desert and struggled big time. It would not bother me to have to go slower to assist people with campers but I just wanna do it as slowly as possible. Can't stop talking about this trip to my mates.. Think they're sick of hearing about it? I don't care!

Yeah Rotto I'm keen to avoid as many campers as we can mate. Given your coming from the West I appreciate you will be a long time on the road.
I am planning a double crossing of the Simpson. East - West - East. I will meet guys from QLD in Birsdville and likely leave my Camper trailer at the caravan park there. Head out over the Simpson East to West (the more difficult direction) and Meetup at the Meeting Point at Dalhousie for the National Meetup Group up. Refuel in Mt Dare, then head out from West to East back to Birdsville in the big group.
I will pick up my camper in Birsdville then head South with the camper and do a Week in the a flinders Ranges I think. A few of the guys have indicated they might do the same.
I have a Full HD OFFROAD Camper Trailer and it will handle the desert, its just undue stress on the Trailer, the Car and Desert and the Group.
If your camper is any less than a rated Full Offroad Camper leave it at home, any less just wont cut it out there. Converted 6x4s are scattered all over the desert with broken springs and broken drawer bars . It's vicious on the gear. Leave it at home if you can mate or leave it at Mt Dare and return there and pic it up on the way back, its not that far on tHe road ;)
My thoughts only mate

I hear what you are saying..... Mine is a heavy duty off road camper... Not Chinese crap and is sensational off road, never to this day have I had to be helped by anyone else and being in Wa it has seen a lot of beach and sand dunes, although I have always towed it with the 4500 and now will be towing with the 3 lt diesel( both diffs locked) so I am sure it is more than capable...... I will be evaluating closer to the date and deciding then, might even meet at Dalhousie and then make our own way across so as to not upset the group... Will wait and see..... Also remembering the ideal return trip to wa is going from perth to laverton to ayers rock and then to mt dare and then across the desert and then from birdsville will be the birdsville track and across the nullabor ... Along way back up to mt dare to get the trailer

Hey Scotty,
Dont be to concerned mate, it sounds like your camper is up to the task and you have seen a heap of Sand therefore have some idea of what is coming mate. Just trying to make sure everyone keeps it real.
There will be no need to travel alone. we will go as a group and fully support all members for this crossing, this is a Group crossing and will be a great trip. I hate being rushed and i cant stand The traveller that starts his car and is ready to go before the rest of the group is near awake mate! Drives me Nuts.
THis will be a great Trip and there is a great bunch going. We will roll into Birdsville as one and have a Beer in the Pub (Tastes good i tell ya )

I will probably take a week (7 days) to get to Dalhousie via the Desert mate. 4 to 5 days back including Birdsville then at least a week in the Flinders is my plan. I will be taking at least 3 weeks and will see a fair bit in that time i think. From there you could spend another week doing the Border Track or head north and up into the Mcdonald ranges for a few days. Palm Valley is amazing, Kings Canyon and if your lucky down into Boggy Hole. f your keen then id be thinking 5 weeks an you will have a ball doing all that mate.

So guys. Around the 10 months mark now to go.. How about we start making lists, groups etc.
Should we keep all here or should we beg Andy to make a sub forum where we can open threads dedicated to parts, routes across and also to and from different states??
Also maybe a to-do list before taking Off covering things to check to ensure everything is mechanicly A1?
I'm getting excited..

Once interior is done its a radiator.
Finish roof rack and hopefully a bag. Injectors would be nice aswell as tyres, but not essential

Me and Bene for sure. Need to have a look at the calendar. I intended to do a pretty quick east west crossing to get to the meetup then pretty casual back as I need to be careful to make sure I have enough leave. They only owe me 12 weeks at least plus long Service. Thinking of taking 3 weeks, maybe 3 and a half.
Thinking probably 26th or 27th June in Birdsville.

Okay this is a question not just aimed that Gary but to everyone, the tyres I would take now are a 265/75 Maxxis AT700, how would they go in that country? If I buy new tyres they will be KM2s which would surely be better but if the ATs are alright I could put it off for a bit longer.

Big tread blocks aren't as important as quality tyres in the best half of their life. If your maxis are worn to more than 60% remaining then leave them at home in my opinion.
The sand does not need a Muddy. Not sure about the flinders though mate??
If your going to buy K m2 anyway then keep the Maxiss for commuting and take the kms to the Simpson.

Just don't use old tyres the heat, load and corrugations will make them fail,
If you are buying new tyres anyway get a muddy, some people think that the large tread blocks are better for stones,
I've done cape York , the Kimberly , googs track, the Simpson and never had a puncher in the tread only the sidewall of Bfg muddies though the 2 sidewall punchers I've had we're km2's and 1 had the inside of the tyre delaminates without it showing on the outside, yet to check the other 5 tyers

Winnie, I had an interesting chat with Brett at 4x4 Obsession last week regarding tyres. Up until then I would have said KM's for sure but now......
In a nutshell he was suggesting that he's seen a lot of the current KM2's go out of round because of some crappy manufacturing faults. This is what he suspects is the culprit of my front end shake because everything else is tight-as in the front end. Michelin (who make them) shifted their manufacturing to China a couple of years ago.......
Make of that what you will.

it all comes down to taste with plastic after it warms up and of course the price
in the end i went stainless 60l and fits behind the back seats of the gu but then you have to look at how much you will use it

Hi mate,
At the start there was allot of interest from QLD in the original thread. In the new thread and Poll the QLDers are a little light on, I hope a few more guys put their hand up.
I know Beneboy is heading down for it and I think Newby if he can get the time. I am meeting them in Birdsville and heading east west to the meetup. Not sure of their departure details from QLD but I think there is a QLD planning thread around somewhere.

Birdsville on the way and leaving the camper in Birdsville for the double crossing then using the camper through the flinders rangers for a week after the crossing.

I will be traveling with my 8yo boy Zach and 3yo daughter Amelia. We will be traveling and camping in an OzTent and towing a Camper to. Birdsville on the way and leaving the camper in Birdsville for the double crossing then using the camper through the flinders rangers for a week after the crossing.
Bring the kids for sure mate, I promise I will Never give you a hard time if your being held up by the kids. This is a pretty laid back trip and it's for the Family. Short days in the car during the crossing and maybe even a rest day in the middle somewhere depending on the weather.
Going to be great
Sweet. Now I have some ammo to go across with. Lol.
I might follow ur trail. Rent a camper I guess cause I ain't got one.

Looking more and more like I just might make this trip! Feeling quite happy right now. I will probably do the double crossing with the qld convoy.
Also an idea, completely understand if people don't want to fork out even more cash, but as well as the meetup in the middle shirts, and stubbie coolers, why not make up some nissanpatrol.com.au sand flags? Just imagine 50 patrols flying the flag in a convoy!
Cheers

What size and how do they usually attach to the pole?
Also, do they have to be bright like a bright orange or would white with a np logo stand out enough?

i call july 2014 at dalhousie springs and then over the simpson desert as our meetup.
There are some public liability issues if we call it the national meetup of the forum and this also rules ab out of the organising group. This trip must be seen as a group of mates hooking up for a great trip together.

Is it a Southern Cross? If not it’s a damn good copy. Definitely one of the best designs around - most practical, easiest & quickest for one person to erect & pack & is spacious. If it is a Southern cross & has the ‘clips’ above the door to attach an awning, I have an awning somewhere for it you can have if you want it.

Pretty crappy awning though isn't it...lol
Winnie
13th January 2014, 06:19 PM
Yeah and the ropes they supply are even worse... the rope is too slippery for those grippy things and keeps sliding loose and the awning falls over haha. My plan is to park the car and roll that awning out so they match up and just tie the tent awning to the roof rack.
