With the lights off down the side yard ... (not the best test as the lights are angled outwards to spread the light either side, but even so, that shed is a good 30-35 metres away!!)

and with the lights on ...

Not sure how many of you have them, but I bought a few of those little LED panels for the interior lights (about 1.5" square) - the ones that have the various adaptors to attach to a variety of connectors (bayoney, festoon, etc) and then the panel sits off the end of the connector cable - AMAZING amount of light output in the car .. simply awesome for the map lights/centre lights etc ...

I've been looking at these lights on Ebay, 1180 lumens is about the lowest and they range up to about 1800 lumens.
This afternoon I picked up a pair of 900 lumen lights (from Ashdown Ingrams) to go on a machine in Lismore. I hooked up one of the lights in the back yard an hour ago just to see how much light they put out, a LOT of light! I think I'll be getting a few more for outdoor lights at home.
What price do you sell these lights for Fletch?

Had a look at some of your photos Scott. And all of you guys really inspire me!
I am convinced now (as if I needed convincing) that I shouldnt part from my MK, and that there is heaps I could do to keep her going for a little while longer and make her look a little better again.
Or....I should actually say.....there are lots of things others could do to make her a shining star again.
I probably need all your advice on this forum with ideas where to go with what. I've got two left hands and no one nearly interested enough to help me out (and little money of course ;, otherwise there would be a newer car!!.......hmmmm, or maybe not?)
After my new hub with the help of Tim, (and de-moulding, haha, and then a good service to fix something exhaust related I believe) it is probably time to do a little anti rust work (if still possible) and then possibly a little lift.....
Oh, I can feel a new life project emerging....

Oooohhhhhhh, many ideas and wishes now! Maybe the forum is not so good after all ;)

1020 Lumens output ... essentially (in my guessing) they are spreading about 25-30 metres at the widest point, and lighting up backwards around 40-50 metres pretty clearly ...
These are the LED panels I was mentioning ...
2879
2878
2876
2877
With the centre light and map reading lights on only (not the very rear light) ...

Great idea - kick one off Henriette, and we'll all start throwing our two cents worth in!!! With all the assistance and advice, you might find you get a lot more miles out of the rig than you think!!!
By the way, chatting with Henriette today, she has done some awesome travelling in a very stock Nissan Patrol, so she may not have many mods yet, but she certainly has plenty of experience (and stories no doubt) of touring this great land of ours.

Not sure as that first price I gave you included the light installation in the rear cabin also, and a fix of the rear 12v connection also (hasn't worked for yonks). I'd say allow 2 hours at most - probably $100 max for wiring plus the switch etc - ballpark $450 for the bar and fully wired up by itself?

Well, driving along this morning I noticed a slight knock in the steering when turning right. I didn't think too much of it other than to 'have a look later' to check bushes and the like. Suffice to say I came home and went back out again without checking anything and whilst driving down Redland Bay Road at about 80klms per hour, I notice the balance feels more out than it had previously (had a slight wobble post the LCMP trip and figured I needed a balance). Get to a set of lights and turn right and "clunk" - a large knock that I feel right through the steering. Pulled over to suss it out and low and behold, my steering damper is p!ssing oil and the bushes on both ends are split badly - the top one so much so that it had peeled open and was just hanging there allowing the damper to move an inch or so either way. Strange thing is, when I got back home, there is no oil on the driveway, so it literally let go whilst driving!!
Dropped into Redlands 4WD (was literally around the corner) and picked up a new Ironman foam cell damper and just fitted it - all hunky dorey - no wobble (so must have been on the way out and don't need a balance) and no more knocks.
Moral to the story - if there is knocking coming from your suspension and/or steering in the front end, then it ain't right and should be looked at thoroughly before it goes to poo on the road.

Haha ... all I need now is the disco ball and we're set at the forum meetup!!! LOL
Everyone who has seen the lights so far have said the old "nice bit of bling" comments etc, but those who have seen them at night have all of a sudden said it's a "must do" - cheap, easy to install, easy to replace, and very effective for those times where you're on tracks at night, setting up camp or unpacking the car at a campsite late, etc. Love em!!

Thanks all - well two and half hours later, I have a working transfer case - good process for me to learn, but painful none the less ... gears are going back on Monday, and as I found out, they were the last set of 85% reductions they had on the shelf, so hopefully they can machine some new ones up before the next outing ...
I feel bad for Derek as I offered him some coin for his time today, and he refused it, stating it "wasn't your fault". Not his fault either, but he just wouldn't have it. Seriously good guy and great mechanic for those in Brissy hunting for one - AutoArt Capalaba.

Righto - Marks reckon the noise is being caused by the spring loaded "washer/spacer" assembly at the front of the gears putting too much pre-load on the gear set - hence the noise in 2 wheel drive. They have told the guys to remove that and re-install (which I'll be doing - scary!!! lol) and shouldn't be an issue. My obvious question was "that spring loaded assembly is there for some reason" to which we got the response "needed for some, not for others" ... strange, but I should be putting them back in tomorrow or Thursday and will let you know how I go ...

I've been lucky so far I guess, but yeah - spending a couple of thousand to have them fitted only to take them out again (which I did to assist the blokes who put it in as I felt bad for them) is a bit dis-heartening - especially knowing I have to remove the current set and reinstall "at least" one more time, if not more if the fix doesn't work .. makes you wonder if the gears prove to be faulty (machined wrong etc) where do Marks stand in all of this to cover the time, effort and costs??

Going the TJM ProLocker (still an air locker), but using the arb compressor as its cheaper and is proven to work with it (pressure level required). Funny thing with arb, they allow others to distribute the air lockers BUT if not installed by arb, you don't get a warranty?? How ridiculous is that??

Morning champion! Decided I wanted to keep an open diff in front to keep trying stuff without the locker. My opinion only, but I didn't want to become totally reliant on a locker to do stuff like we did at Beerburrum - I like having someone guide you and having to direct the vehicle, pick a line etc to give stuff a crack using driving technique - the locker is really just to save the truck if it proves too much, not to make me lazy, if you know what I mean ... good to have, but wanted to be able to turn it off ... does that make sense? Not really!!! LOL

Here's something I found out yesterday as well - Tony, please help me out with the terms here.
When they took the wheels off and took the CV's etc out, where the wheel bearings sit on the CV stem (spindles???) are starting to look worn - they told me that a lot of the time people get what they believe to be a bearing wobble and change them out, only to find the wobble is still there - essentially it's because the spindle? is wearing down and the bearing is loose on it. Mine weren't too bad, but they also said it is more common on nissans than toyotas (yuck) as the bearings are closer together? and hence the wheel load on the bearings is worn over a shorter distance and hence they wear quicker?
Tony - are you with me? If so, can you explain it properly please .... I'm still just an apprentice!!! lol

That's an easier one - ARB won't warrant the product if not installed by them - the agent can sell the product but has to be installed by ARB for warranty!! Being a "support the local sherriff" guy I am, I stuck with the guys I trust and put in a TJM instead (still with the ARB compressor though as they are proven and cheaper!!).
Love ARB's products, but try to support smaller players where possible so the big boys don't get all the business and hopefully it drives price competitiveness for everyone .... hopefully!! ...

I've not heard of this before but I can see that on high milage vehicles especially on vehicles that doo a lot of rough road miles that this could be an issue. The red arrows in the photo show where the wheel bearing casings sit on the spindle. Normally the bearing casings are a neat fit on the spindle but over time the spindle (being made of a softer material than the bearing casings) could wear causing movement between bearing and the spindle. This movement can not be adjusted out leaving spindle replacement as the only option to repair.

Yep - they just don't care. At the end of the day I can't blame them, they ate employees of large companies and like most, they are simply there to earn a wage (which is fine to a degree). I prefer to deal with a place where I can see and talk with the owner - yep, I might pay a bit more, but they generally value my business as they don't have the national reach of the big players, and when it goes to poo, they roll up the sleeves and fix the problem. That's why I go to Redlands 4WD - Peter Kitchen is the owner, he's always there, and he absolutely pulls out all stops to ensure you are not only satisfied, but that you will cone back! Smaller operators often get overlooked, and then when they fall and large players own the market, we all whinge and bitch about it ... Vicious cycle that WE absolutely contribute to.

I'll go one step further - an example which is not trying to open a debate, but when I got my snorkel I was looking at Safari as they are a large and well known superior product (which Pete agreed with), but he suggested I go with Ironman which is actually cheaper - the reason? Because he has forged a strong dealer relationship with ironman and knows they will stand behind him and their product. Safari has a six year guarantee that they proudly splash about, and he stated "good luck trying to get them to honour it" ... essentially they'll put you through the wringer after 2 years if something goes wrong, and basically sap you of any will to get it replaced under warranty. The ironman only has twelve months warranty, but he stood by it and said if it showed true signs of perishing (or whatever), he pretty much guaranteed they'd replace it to protect the brand. Dhuck is an ex-plastics industry worker, and he said the same thing - the PVC used for them is basically the same compound when tested, but Safari use the name (big player) and a bullsh!t guarantee to price up their product - remember the movie Tommy Boy? To quote "I could take a sh!t in a shoebox and put a guarantee on the side, and all you'd have is a guaranteed piece of sh!t" ... it's the people and their genuine concern with maintaining their business that makes the difference ... and if you have to pay a bit more for that, then so be it - you'd be paying a lot more for it in future if they aren't around!!!!

Totally agree with everything said about the big name players and honouring guarantees.
I couldn't get anywhere with claims on two separate suspension components from the same place.
Got the proverbial runaround, and then was told not to bring it back for them to look at, but to e-mail photos
of the problem to them and they would foward them to their supplier who would then decide if a claim was
warranted.
Gave up in the end, it was costing more to chase them than what the claims were worth.
Which is exactly what they do it for.
No more big guys for me!

I like you're thinking big man!!! Exactly what dhuck and I were thinking ... just need some thoughts on design and I'll definitely need to have someone else do the panel chop so it's neat and rust proofed and resprayed etc ...
Thinking dual 50mm OD tube around the outside, opening up as they come around the back, with some flat steel on the top tube to mount a checkerplate tread - I'll out the trailer plugs and Anderson plug up under the plate to get them out of the way (they are getting hammered every time I go out!!).
So many options, so little talent to do it!!! LOL

Yes please!! I don't mind keeping that center piece - it's the outer edges that need to go, but the centre will always be limited by the tow bar so if keeping it is straight forward, I'm happy to give that a go and simply lift the 7pin trailer plugs (flat and round) and Anderson plug up on top to protect them a bit - they got buckled to buggery at the last trip.
