Well, not much as I wasn't allowed in the workshop with the gear running (makes sense), but a short one of Tank on the Dyno.
Some truths are being revealed from the original sale information provided too - there's no way on God's green earth that it was making near 200kw at the rear wheels previously as the turbo actuator is about 7.5lbs ... it spikes up to 14 or thereabouts, but on the machine, plummets round 2000rpm back down to 7-8 lbs no matter what ... that's a problem I can get resolved pretty easily, and would expect a MAJOR increase in output. Additionally, the intercooler is struggling and air is essentially being pulled into the engine as it's working so hard, and subsequently stretching and thinning out the air (and heating it) - another problem for another day ...
BUT, on the last run I saw, it threw out 190HP/140kw's at the rear wheels (they are about 120HP/90Kw standard) and with all due respect, I'm happy at the moment with that due to the fact that it is quite simply just purring - runs awesome, fuel consumption rate (according to ECU - will be different under load on road) is down around 13-13.5 LPH at cruising RPM's and it sounds outstanding!!! More berries will come but not at the expense of the engine - that said, having driven it the other night, I would have said it has twice the power of original just in "feel", and I know for a fact (with witnesses) that I gave an Audi A6 a hurry up when he tried to take me off the line to get in front as the road went back to single lane. So in short, it's hauling.
Not going to change the intercooler, but will be getting a new actuator and electronic boost control put on it (not that expensive funnily enough) which he said would definitely see it well over 200HP at the rear wheels alone as it can actually hold 13-14 lbs of boost from 2500-4000 RPM (peak power range). Probably going to look into Water Methanol for the Intercooler issue and that was on the cards right from the outset anyway, so not too dramatised - proof will be in the pudding this afternoon when I drive it (and already I have plans!!!! lmao ... what a d!ckhead!!!!)
Anyways - short but enjoy the noise!!!

Yep, definitely has a nice 'note' to it ... as said, find it funny about the power output results, as it certainly feels much punchier (I have gained a 56% power increase overall which isn't to be sneezed at I guess). I don't know ... I'm happy with the result, and as said, get to drive it properly this afternoon, so that'll be the telling factor for me. Didn't see the torque curve whilst I was there, and again, that's more important to me than outright tyre burning power - got a bloody heavy camper trailer to lug around!!! ... and the driver of course!!! lmao (start with personal trainer this afternoon by the way ... dreading it!!!!)

threw out just over 400nm of torque and one thing I didn't take into account with all the information in my previous post, is the large tyres!!! He actually commented that even though I'm looking at 140kw and 400+nm at the rear wheels, against the standard rating (90kw and 240nm) my tyres would be stripping as much as 20-25% (no joke) of the number off, basically, it is more likely close to double the factory output ... his exact words were "it's producing a truckload of torque" ... outstanding!!!!

Thanks mate - will give them a call. Going to do the electronic boost controller first though ... once I know it will hold boost, then I'll look into the rest, but for the moment, I am just going to take some time and enjoy having it back!!
The power delivery has me impressed, no real 'sink in your seat' feel as the turbo spools up. Moreso a seamless delivery of power right through the rev range and it doesn't actually feel like you're hammering, but the speed pickup is more than impressive. I reckon you're right - that Audi A6 would have a far harder time of it now!!!! lmao.
Can't wait to hook up the trailer on Saturday and hit the highway up to Bribie to see what all that torque does ...
Ben-e-boy

Okey dokey, small update.
Did the first reasonable size trip over the weekend since getting Tank back. Did 407 klms made up as follows:
1. About 40 klms of reasonably hard pedal driving testing it out when I got it back and filled it to the brim
2. 50 klms of what I'd say is average around town/cruising driving to get Timbo from the airport (suburbia, bit of 80 kph, bit of 100 kph, etc)
3. About 200 klms of highway driving
4. About 117 klms with tyres at 20 psi on sand in 2 and 4wd
Returned a consumption figure of ... wait for it ...
17.76 litres per hundred!!!!
I'm dead set stoked with that!!!! The best I ever got pre-turbo was the trip up to Rockhampton with Dhuck to pick up Kelvins trailer (the trip up only without the trailer - about 650 klms) - that was 15.25 litres per hundred and essentially nothing but highway driving.
I'm thinking if I drive reasonably normally, I'm looking at an around town figure of mid to late teens, and a highway consumption figure probably closer to 13 litres per hundred. That's on a near 3 tonne rig, and from an engine punching out close to 200 horsies and 514nm at the rear wheels!!!! And it holds speed heaps better now also (not up and down at the slightest hint of a slope like it was before).
Happy is an understatement.

You looked into the world of intercoolers any more Biggus Riggus?
No boss - going to leave the XR6 one on there and if an issue when I get the electronic boost controller, I'll be going water/meth injection to cool things down - cheaper and easier alternative to swapping out the intercooler after all that effort (and truth be told, I'm not convinced it's having the issue truth be told - they rate them to 260kw and behind a large 6 engine, and I'm nowhere near that currently, so thinking it's more the "setup" than the intercooler itself ...)

Outside of electronic boost controller, I sorta think the build is coming to an end ... lots of cosmetic stuff to do, but I've hit a threshold on serious mods and am pretty happy with where it's at ...

That intercooler you have, are the ends where hose clamp to/over it rather thick?.
I found on my car that this caused alot of turbulence may-be back pressure on inlet port.
I cut a car wash sponge making a round plug and pushed a little way into in/out ports of cooler, coated this with spray grease to seal this over and ported them out, " tapering " in/out ends of cooler .
keeping tilted down carefully used long-nose pliers removed 1 sponge and cleaned up, made a through job to ensure nothing left behind to fall inside, and then cleaned the other the same .
this made a notable increase to torque.

The inlet and outlet are 60mm - think the tube itself is 2.5-3mm making an inner diameter of 54mm. I'm producing a heap of torque at 7.5lbs of boost, but more than happy to try this down the track once the electronic boost controller goes on and I know what I'm dealing with (should be thumping out around 650-700nm at the rear wheels!!) - appreciate the info mate!!

Have to get used to it now - it has heaps of grunt, and on beer o'clock hill, if anything, I actually had to get off the skinny pedal - was hitting it too fast in low range (with reduction gears!!) at about half throttle!!! Funny thing (and I have a theory - a bad one, but a theory none the less). When I had all the lights off, it was running hotter than previous (no joke), and I literally spoke of this to two people the day I got it fitted, as when I put the new bar on and mounted the lights, it ran cooler again?????
Soooo ... my (bad) theory is that in some instances, spotties etc actually cause turbulent air in front of the grill in same principle as those Hiclones etc, and allows the "thinner" air behind the small vacuum caused to get in easier ... I can't figure it out otherwise - we're talking running at half on the temp gauge without spotties, and no more than just under/around a third with the spotties .... I'm certainly confused and would love an alternate explanation ...

That's interesting about air flow.
Possibly because of extra airflow going under car is scavaging what air is going threw engine bay more so with spots on.
Without lights you may be getting an air lock so to speak.
Getting an invisible wall of air preventing air flow threw engine bay, cancelling one another out.
Result to much air not being able to exhaust so to speak.
FYI
Its said those big mud-flaps owners have fitted that run across the back their cars actually interfere with this air flow and cause over heating problems not enough air flow under car to scavaging hot air from engine bay, big air buffer caused by restriction "out back" .
cheers.

Well - just dropped Tank off for yet another bout of work!!!
Getting a couple of flat spots ironed out in the fuel map, and low and behold when we got to the park on the weekend, the front seal on the water pump poo'd itself and is leaking, so a new one going in.
On top of that, the gremlins are back and the TC isn't locking up again (manual switch isn't working either, nor the temp gauge) - the switch and gauge are on the same fuse, so can understand that may have blown, but again, as to what's causing this constant issue .. no idea ...
As ridiculous as it sounds, I hope the TC is either stuffed, or the solenoid is stuffed .. straight replacement for new part and move on ... spending 3 days going through electrical issues to find a loose wire/faulty connection is not my idea of "value for money" ...
And just so it's on record, even with Tank still a little under the weather, he can still climb straight over the top of other makes and models!!!!! :smileyvault-cute-bi

If it is blowing a transmision fuse i'd say it would cause the tc to not work at all.
I remember wiring up a torque converter lockup switch on a gq about 8 years ago from memory it put power to the lock up solenoid an easy test would be to do that yourself and work back from there.
I have also heard of the switch in the gear selector being at fault so worth checking that as well.
The trans computer being where it is does make it prone to water damage and i would also check it for dry solder joints and the plugs for corrosion they are a common cause of intermittent issues.
Their is an electrical contact cleaner lubricant available from most electronic stores like jaycar dick smith etc.

I am not 100 % sure of this but i think from memory the trans computer on the carb models has a few factors used to calculate the tc lockup as well tps vs speed etc so anyone else having trouble it might be worth checking the tps with a multimeter to make sure it is working properly as well.

Dont suffer the related issues.
Should easily handle all the extra torque you have now.
Even give extra power as auto's lose suck rear wheel power and torque.
Better fuel economy.
A bolt on upgrade, so to speak.
Better brake response.
Lighter in weight increased pay load.
Easy to service.
But if you drive around town I agree an auto is certainly easer to drive in traffic.
Yes possibly quicker gear change in auto.
With all the extra go you have now, that might not be such a problem anymore.
You'll love this, even the Missus by her own choice will only drive a manual. lol

Would of thought it pretty even.
I take onboard your comment.
I guess was looking at it from manily a mechanical point of view before.
Not trying to stir the pot please don't go there, but.
If going off Rd most of the comments thought really stack up off Rd.
I forget to mention, no transmission cooler to worry about.
Radiator not loaded up doing 2 jobs unless separate cooler fitted.
another system to worry about and more cost.
Trying to look at whole pic now since it been pointed out to me, that's all.
Please explain why better,I can guess but not the same as going by someone's real world experience.

I admit to saying and would prefer if I had to drive in say Sydney type traffic, an auto would be the go.

As per many adventures (which are posted up here) I'll pit my auto on sand, mud, and rock against any comparable truck with a manual ... simple as that!! lol
Yep, potentially more costly to maintain (and this is my first auto by the way over 6 fourbies including 3 other patrols) but I am either lazy, stupid, or both ... because now I have the heavy duty valve body, and the reduction gears, it is simply superb ... Remember, I had the TC problems last year (just hasn't been rectified by tightening the band etc) and could just be an electrical problem.

All good indeed mate!!! I give way too much crap to everyone else to not expect it to be flung at me!!!! lmao
Just love the ease of an auto - yep. I may be lazy, old, naive, etc, etc, but in reality, it's just so easy to drive, no riding clutches through rock work in creeks etc, no up and down gear on sand and mud (and no loss of momentum as per Lucas' post), and allows plenty of ability to answer the phone, whilst cracking a tinny, as I'm adjusting a mirror, and putting my sun visor down without having to worry about changing gears!!!! LMFAO!!!
And no, for any crazy kids out there, I don't condone talking on your mobile or drinking whilst at the wheel .. Feels plain wrong that I feel I even need to add that these days ... But you can adjust your mirrors and sun visors at will though ... lol

I've never ever thought that Auto's would be good 4WD'ing. Always stuck to my "manual" guns.
While there are a few pro's to having a manual, there are certainly just as many pro's to having an auto.
All comes down to driving preference and suitability. I can get a bad back sometimes with an old injury plus I have arthritis in both hips. Pushing a clutch in all the time can give me some grief.
But using a manual is just so visceral! lol.

Do ya find any run-on with the new turbo setup?.
Takes a while for engine braking effect to assist slowing vehicle when you lift off the go peddle.
Not necessarily a bad thing.
Means less lag when you stomp back on go peddle.
But at same time less "instant" brake effect.
Turbo still supplying enough air to inlet manifold to prevent inlet vacume causing engine brake.
Another reason/effect turbo's have in freeing up an engine to spin when you want it to go.
Wondering what you have now, so I can figure this into my build while sorting mine.
That stainless manifold I just showed you probably helps creates more run-on compared to a std TD42 manifold.
Not preaching to ya, just trying to figure and maybe help others understand a turbo set-up.

I'll get that irond out, but other than that, just itching to get it out for another flogging (ahem, I mean 'test run' !! lol).
Through another member on here, I have a carbon fibre high flow air box on the way, so will be interested to see what, if any, performance changes come form that.
Lastly, I've decided to bite the bullet and get the scoops put into the bonnet to let some heat out from the turbo. Picking up 2 GU style scoops from Raider Industries and will be putting them on next week - will update with snaps once done.

Righto - have been thinking about getting a scoop to try and cool things down at least a bit with the turbo. Spoke to FRP at Kippa Ring today, and he advised me away from the bonnet scoop - he does a fair bit of off roading, and has a sponsored comp truck also. He reckons he's seen a great deal more improvement from installing "gills" as per below. Essentially allows the heat the escape when not moving, but when driving, the force of air flow over the top of them actually "drags" the hot air out, removes the air pocket inside and lets more airflow through the grill also as a result (meaning cooler engine etc also). Sort of solves the whole 'mount a scoop forwards or backwards debate also - in the shot below, the fins face backwards, so don't "swallow" water as such on creek crossings, but allow air to actually flow past the vents as speed causing the dragging effect).
These were cheaper than the scoop so certainly didn't push me down a path of going something different to line his own pockets, which seems bloody good of him.
They are scheduled to go on Monday of next week, so I will update on the result post that. Fingers crossed!!!!

Haha ... still has the ability to mate, but not sure if that means the box is holding up!!
Looks like it's all coming out anyway to replace the torque converter -- going to give it a 'tickle up' whilst it's out, but now have shudders in the TC when hot and at lower speed (80-90) which is somewhat indicative of the TC clutch being shot ...

Gday rob,
Turbo beanies trap the heat, when shutting the engine down the car should idle for a set period of time to let the cooler water and oil to pass through the turbo. This stops the oil and water almost boiling inside your turbo killing your bearings.
A turbo timer does this trick automatically.
You mention heat soak. ( Remembering that turbos beanies only block radiant heat, not conductive ) Best described as heat transferring from the exhaust side of the turbo to the compressor side of the turbo heating your air that's being fed into your engine. Everyone has their theory on how much it does heat the compresser core up.
A intercooler will eliminate that, as the "warm" air that's now being heated up by the turbo passes through the intercooler.
The plus side to a turbo beanie is it traps that heat into the turbo, and we all know heat= energy. Some even go as far as saying that the turbo will spool faster. I don't think the difference would be noticeable, but im no expert.
Chappa
19th April 2012, 08:28 PM
We have them beanie's on every thing at work and they have caused that many issue's it's not funny with melting things and fire's from oil leaks getting soaked up by nappy, conditions are alot different to underground and gear is differnt to patrol's but just be careful of were all the heat goes!

It's official ... I won't be getting one!!
That said, bigger turbo planned to go on it as the current one too small and generating too much heat ... Going to a 3.25" exhaust also, and complete remap of the fuel ... sucker for punishment really!! lol
The new turbo is a Garrett, but insure of model ....
Big power and torque are being achieved, but the heat produced from the small turbo is ridiculous, so not seeking more power as such (should be a side benefit though) bit more efficiency.

Thanks mate - the gauges are about to multiply with a pyro and air intake temp gauges going in also ... so lucky me, I need to get a 4 gauge pod rather than the one I bought!!! lol
Rear windows come out next week to be replaced by fixed glass with rubber frames (from Aussie AutoMoulds), and the new flex plate arrives next week also, so the gearbox comes out, new flex plate, new torque converter and new lockup solenoid going in. Hopefully that'll be the end of my TC grief (being dramatic of course, not that painful as I have the TC lockup switch but I keep forgetting to turn it off and wonder why I have lost power at low speed!!! lmao .... what a goose!!!).
New seats in the next month or two, and then the turbo and exhaust upgrade ... these seats that were posted up the other day would be a treat, but costly through Mr Nissan no doubt ...
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/05/6.jpg
Thinking super flex arms down the track also to give the front end more flex so it sits flatter (photo below shows what I mean - heaps in the rear, but the front just not moving as well as I'd like just yet) - front not flexing as well means car on angle ... not to my liking ...

Hahahah ... after the wife, the 4 kids, the rent, the credit cards, the bank, the wife's Jeep repayments, the truck mods, and assorted other creditors .. sure ... why not ... it'll be something like $6.47 remaining I reckon ... lmao
Not that costly mate - it'll owe me about $40-42K I predict once done (that includes the original buy price) and that's over a few years ... the same as someone buying one for that price and paying it off over that time in my thinking ... I bought a bucket, and have done it up - spending as I have it, no different than taking a loan and buying one and making fortnightly repayments ...
I still look at other peoples rigs and setups and drool ... what I'd give for a top condition TD42t GU with a pile of goodies on it ... love my GQ no doubt (have had two GU's previously) but its for play, a GU in my world is for awesome touring setups (still mighty capable and strong as a skunks odour, but 'prettier' and more comfortable for the family for touring --- I'll have the best of both worlds then .. but that's a pipe dream currently!! lol).

Sure does!
1.06 A/r rear, that's referring to the rear exhaust housing size. The bigger the number the bigger the housing and the bigger the housing the bigger engine you'll need to produce enough exhaust gas to run the turbo efficiently.
0.5 inlet, that's the size of the compresser housing. Not a big important factor..
60mm trim, that's the size of the compresser wheel. Bigger wheel the more volume of air it can move.
Your issue with the massive flat spot at 3000rpm is that little turbo running out of puff. The exhaust side of the turbo isn't big enough to produce enough air volume to hold the set boost pressure. The 1.06 rear will sort that out!!

For those interested, Tank features in the Auguest issue of 4WD Monthly Customs Magazine (comes with issue 184 in August). A bit excited to see how the happy snaps turned out ... especially since my rough head may be in a few!! lol
