Recently the PC, when started, instead of going to the desktop, now opens the menu on all the "plugged in" hard drives. This is happening 9 out of 10 times.

Any ideas why, and how to stop this happening? I think it may have started after the most recent auto OS upgrade.
Sounds like a feature re-introduced in W10 (PCs used to do this ages ago).

I remembers what yo had open at shut down and automatically launches those programs for you at startup.

Try closing all open windows / programs / apps before you shut down.

Shut down and startup again and see if the windows re-open upon startup. I strongly suspect it's this.
