Sounds just like what a car dealer might say (insert personal opinion car dealers). Would this spongyness be an ADR-compliant design aspect? I think not.

I have no idea how Patrol brakes meet minimum standards.

    Gong him Red!!

I complained & the workshop manager assured me that this was normal for Patrol brakes. Thinking he was treating me as a dumb car owner who knew nothing I made it clear that I did not believe that any properly working brakes could feel so bad. He assurred me again that they were normal & added that Nissan deliberately design them like this to ensure that owners are less likely to lock the brakes accidentally in off road conditions! Convinced he was spinning me a line I continued to complain, whereupon he led me to a customer’s almost new ST wagon & invited me to sit in the driver seat & test the brake pedal for myself. It felt exactly like mine - like if you press hard enough the pedal could touch the floor. In reality the brakes would lock before you got to that point. Nevertheless the brakes inspired no confidence whatsoever. Different pads & rotors on the front gave a noticeable improvement. (Anyone know if there are any performance shoes available for the rear drums?).
Humm the old GQ maverick wasn't spongy per say but teflon lines made a notable improvement in feel and response.
And patrol, well I'd say a little more pedal play than I like, stops well but yeah don't like the play/travel either.
Have a set of teflon coming for Pat, will let ya know how that goes, soon as they turn up.

Not biting here, just clarifying why its being talked about.

Yep 2.8t dry + 3.5 trailer, see then how the std brake system stacks up.
yes trailers have brakes but in an emergency you need all possible.
Or then going down a decent you want to be able to rely on stopping power.
That's the problem as I see it.

Then why do people "up grade" to TB48 rotors looking for more stopping power.
Just maybe mr nissan thought that people would buy the biggest engine for towing and gave it the larger diameter rotors and calipers.
    finished crying lol

    I completely agree.
    They could have been better.
But it's sorta like expecting a Chrysler 300c ride from a patrol.
    People want lambo stopping power.

Yotas have good brakes.. 4 pot fronts and rear.
    But there diffs are shit.
So maybe more went into strength then brakes to help keep costs under control.
Give me strength and I'll start slowing down 100m earlier lol..

Id be investing in a set of teflon SS braided brake lines.
That should take a bit if no most of that "spongy" feel
away. Brake Safe are a vendor here and sell kits for all models.

Im yet to see how 10mm extra diameter,,really 5mm will improve the stopping power
IMHO I dont think a 5mm bigger rotor [316mm] will stop any better than the 306mm rotor
