You're talking about this bit ?? Concern being the washer bending/crushing into the gap ? I looked at this and was just gonna get some high tensile washers tomorrow morning. The shop around the corner was shut today.
Edit: I got some at work, but won't be there till Wednesday.

I've just made two 8mm 40x40 washers for you
that looks like you'll still have some thread sticking out of the nut
    I have HT washers here.

No stress mate, I'll just get some my self. You've already done enough work on these for me. Just some large HT washers and bingo.

I also stuffed up the original "tow" hook's bolts / thread. Well, I'm not sure if it's stuffed up as I only undone them, and it took a bit of force. But now, there is no way in hell or heaven these bolts are going back in. The thread just does not want to grab. Concern is, it holds the bottom radiator support bar, thingie.

So I managed to slam one bolt in with a bunch of washers, and I guess somehow it created / re-created it's own thread?? But important thing is, that bracket is now secure and going nowhere.

If really concerned you could put a heli coil in it.
As I told you I was buying heaps of tools, one thing thats become very
handy was a huge tap and die set about 600mm x 600mm two layers
Thats been a godsend on more than one time,
Looks like that bolt has been put in with a rattle gun at some stage

    Tap and die set
    1 Small ones get lost
2 Big ones never get used
3 No set actually has the size you want when you want it
4 When you snap a tap in a hole because you drilled too small, it is harder than a drill so you can't drill it out
5 All common drills are either too big or too small for your tap
Other than that they are a great addition to your tool set.

This is my one, and you'd be surprised how many you actually use.
and worth every cent IMO. Of coarse you dont use some but who uses a 15mm spanner?

Alright. So excuse the ignorance ...
In Laymans terms, it's pretty much like a "bolt" with a thread, that's generally tougher than the metal you're tapping into, and as it's spun into the metal it creates or -recreates a thread ?????

Not to be confused with a thread file equally as handy IMO
