    Comments about GU 2.8l

    Hey all,
About to buy a '98 GU 2.8l. Looking for peoples' opinions, experiences, thoughts.
I've heard they're a bit underpowered but I'm not planning to tow with it.
I can't afford a 4.2TD, and I don't believe petrol motors belong in 4X4's (sorry to those that own one and love it)
    Cheers for your comments,

i just bought one about 6 weeks ago. 98 2.8 turbo diesel and i love it. i did have a ML triton which was a 3 litre and very zippy so i noticed the drop in power but i still think its great. im going to do the mods that people recommend to get more out of it and then should be perfect.

Yeah, they're good mate, block the EGR, remove the butterfly, maybe chip it, as soon as the turbo arcs up, they're off like a dirty shirt.
One important thing, what ever they tell you, as soon as you get it, replace the timing belt, tensioner and idler, could save you a total engine rebuild.
Nizzbits on here can send you genuine parts a lot cheaper than Nissans.

EDIT, forgot to mention, ALWAYS loctite the harmonic balancer BOLT!

    Wink

Hi buddy, Have a 98 GU RD28Ti myself, They are a bit sluggish down low and on hills, but when you learn what they can handle rev wise, you can drive them accordingly to compensate, a chip can also fix that problem.
Absoulutely love mine to bits, mate has a 200 series cruiser and is shocked how much power the 2.8 has, he cant pull away on the open roads, and its great out bush.
Where some can just crawl up mountains, the 2.8 needs to rev, but like I said when you learn how they rev they are awesome.
Here’s a couple of threads worth checking out.
