    GQ chassis recall

    hi,

I read somewhere that the GQ's were recalled for chassis reinforcement around the steering box as the chassis could crack. Not sure if this is true, can anyone confirm and if it is true does anyone have a photo of the reinforcement.

    thanks

I don't have a photo but I can confirm that there was a recall to install a reinforcement bracket to the front panhard rod chassis mount that bolted up to the steering box mounting points. The recall affected vehicles built before 1994 or there abouts. After that the chassis was reinforced in the factory and was a weld on upgrade.
Your 1992 should have the bolt on bracket fitted. It's easy enough to spot if it's there, it's just a heavy steel bracket that bolts onto the inside of the chassis rail on the steering box mounting bolts and has 2 arms that come down around either side of the panhard rod mount.

I'm not sure when the change over was but my '92 Patrol had the bolt on and my '94 the weld on. I fitted the bolt on brace to my '94 as well just to make sure. Got a brace and the bolts from the wreckers for about $30. (BTW, the photos in my earlier post are not of my cars but of cars at my local TJM store, the '92 is a TI 4.2 EFI turbo, the '94 a dual cab promo car.)
