Is the exhaust flexi pipe needed,looks hard to get at?

Hiya lads.
My wagon is gettin a little loud,so i had a look and both connections to the flexi pipe have rusted out.Do i need this or can i just bridge it with pipe,and if I do need it,do I have to dump the trans cross member plate to get at the end closer to the engine?
Looks like a prick of a job,but i assume its needed........I was thinking of permanantly welding pipe in there cause both flanges are pretty much stuffed.
Any opinions appreciated.

You do need the flex joint so the rock and shake of the engine doesn't snap it more..

Doesn't matter. You'll find stock will have a flexible joint were the cast headers meet the pipe built into it.

A woven flex joint is a lot better

Hopefully 3dogs pipes up. He has seen the result of no flex joint on his car. A flex joint is generally required otherwise you will rattle the exhaust to bits causing it to crack out and also as above the natural motion of the engine when accelerating/decelerating will cause failure.
If you do not want to use one then make sure all your exhaust rubber mounts are in good condition. I don't run a flex joint in my GQ ute but the exhaust stops at the cab.

Those flex joints are expensive, manufacturers wouldn't use them if they didn't have to...
