Personally I'd be asking why they only lasted 12 months, 1000 km's is nothing.

The first set I changed out on my GU had done over 220,000 kms and weren't chewed out, they were just getting brittle...

Thanks for the in depth response, I know the feeling of watching gauges on a long trip, having just returned from a 4 month trip myself.

It's a track just south of the Frenchmans that kind of runs parallel to it, 38km long.

I'm not sure if that's its actual name but that's what some locals called it.
