you can pick up a reasonably good multimeter from some where like leading edge electrical or dick smith for under 50 bucks. may as well grab a test light while your there, makes testing fuses heaps...

might just add to take the cluster out all i did was take the covers off around the steering wheel, remove the black facia, undo cluster screws pull cluster out as far as it will with connectors then...
