Loosening a stuck nut...

Hey guys,

I've tried everything for this nut short of voodoo magic.. and the ****** thing won't budge no matter what I do.

I've had a large-ish breaker bar with about 3 large-ise blokes leaning on it, I've tried soaking it in WD-40 and then the same 3-bloke treatment, I went and rented an electric rattle gun which, the gentleman at the store assured me would get anything undone.. As a last resort I've tried heating it with a blow torch, 3-bloke breaker again, as well as hitting it with the rattle gun while heated.

So, the nut in question is hard to explain. It's the nut that holds in the tail shaft flange, for the front tail shaft on a 4.2d GQ patrol. It's a big 30mm nut - its in where, once you take the front tailshaft off the gearbox, the big nut that sits under there.

(I need to take it off, because I've just dropped a 4.2d motor into a 2.8t chasis - I've modified the engine mount etc, but the ***** diff's and tailshafts are different. Price of parts wise changing the flange was the cheapest way out of it)

So, any tips or experience from anyone who's ever tried to loosen this particular nut, or a similarly tight nut, would be very much appreciated ! Thanks.

not sure, do they have a roll pin through them, that needs tapping out with a pin punch first?

Are you sure you're turning it the right way? I've always been able to get them undone with a 600mm breaker bar and a similar size tool to hold the flange (diff out of car).

You could use a tool called a nut splitter. It has a jaw that fits onto the nut with a cutting edge that splits the nut in half when you tighten it. Its the last resort but ALWAYS works.

Is your engine running?
I took mine off yesterday, started the engine and let the clutch out in 4L in 1st, worth a shot. If you do it in reverse, it will tighten I believe

Forgive me for being naive but I fail to understand how this would work when the front shaft needs to be removed in order to access the nut being referred to above?

I was wondering how you going about anchoring the Diff yoke while your attempting to undo this nut?

If the yoke is not properly secured, ie: (held firmly in its place while attempting to undo the retainers nut) & your only relying on the Diff internals to stop the yoke from moving then an impact gun will have little effect & nor would much else in fact as the fall effects of the impact itself will be absorbed by the Diff internals, ie: Its loading up the Diff center & the other moving parts which means its not isolating the full force of the impact to the retainer nut itself.

Loading up the Diffs internal components in this way ie: (using a breaker bar & or impact gun without securing the the yoke when attempting to remove the yoke retainer nut) could cause them to become damaged & you may already be in full knowledge of this info but I thought it would be worth a mention all the same.

Mate i have never found a nut that i could not undo with that little gem. I have cracked an Alternator Pulley while resting the Alternator in my other hand without holding the pulley...CRACK!!! and your done.

Big Winner for me.

U could try a toque multiplier I think wurth sells them ... I have one at work n can undo truck wheel nuts with a 1/2 " breaker bar with ease ... If u can't do that try hitting the nut with a big hammer while u are trying to undo it .... Or simple use the gas axe n cut it off

yeah Tony i reckon he meant a conventional plug in Rattle gun that delivers the same as a pneumatic one. These Ezy Wrenches are Nothing like a conventional rattle gun. They will smash it mate. cant imagine being able to deliver the brake he needs any better

The first time i pulled the trigger on one my father in-law had bought it and i thought...yeah right! Tssssssss! Junk, then it went bang and i could see the potential.

It is an animal mate. eats the toughest of jobs with ease. I have a couple of significant rattle guns and when they both fail i get this little thing out to show em up.

Best describe for the action of these is...
