question about 3inch exhaust for TD42T

Hi all, wonder if anyone can offer any info on the changes a 3inch exhaust and dump will make to my TD42T.
I am under the impression that it will free up the motor a fair bit, help to get rid of exhaust gases, give it more pull, and reduce turbo lag?
What I'd like to know is if this will also cause the Turbo to run at higher boost and the motor to run at higher revs when highway driving? Excuse my ignorance, not a mechanic by any means!
ATM when driving at 90-100kms the motor cruises nicely at around 2000 revs.
Am worried that if I were to change the exhaust and dump (and I'm only clutching at straws here) it will create a less desirable vehicle to drive long distance.
Will be doing frequent 3-5hr trips down the south east to the coorong.
Any advice from others who may have put an exhaust on a td42T would be greatly appreciated or a link to previous thread regarding this.

No not at all. Fit the 3" exhaust, a manual. Boost controller and a Pyro then put it on a Decent Dyno and you will never doubt your descision. You will gain power and love the result.

Certainly helps to put the mind at ease, have been planning to get the car dyno'd so will put it off till I have the other bits and pieces on.
And the pyro isn't a bad choice either to sit under the boost gauge as I have noticed no one does a single gauge pod for the a pillar.
Guess I better look for some more cashies! Anyone need an aircon fixed?? Haha.....

Potsy I'm running the same motor with a 3" Beaudesert no muffler only the converter still quiet because of the turbo (factory standard) and picked better spool speed at lower RPM with more top end RPM and it made the old tractor a totally different beast to drive . IMHO its the best thing you can do for gain at the lowest $ .

Best thing I ever did. 3" exhaust, manual boots controller and dyno tune although local diesel bloke is almost as good as a dyno. So much better to drive with 155 hp at rear wheels on dyno with standard pump and tyres. No improvement in fuel economy because you tend to use the extra power. Exhaust temps are better under load as boost normally is 8 to 12 psi but will go as high as 16 to 18 psi under high load and up hill thereby keeping exhaust temps under 500.

Will be booking it in as soon as I have the money but will probably just be going for a mild steel 3inch.
Will book it in with aaa exhaust on nelson st, stepney as I've heard good things.
Don't know about 155kw the guy I bought it from showed me a redout that says my bus (Patrice) is only making about 80kw, but I guess we'll see. Fingers crossed the exhaust is blocked as buggery.
Hey mega texture, did wonder whether I say no interstate jobs or not, and I'm not on route to Cape York either....yet.
Check the filters on the unit spitting ice and if they're ok your probably gonna need it re-gassed.
If so be sure the bloke pressure tests it so you don't have the same issue next year. Too many gas and go blokes around nowadays.

Hey mate, I didn't think that the diesels needed cat converters or am I tripping?
Is it maybe just a hotdog muffler?

Wizard noted 155HP not 155KW. ;). If your 80KW now you might see into the 90s and be happy with that as a mild tune with good long term results. If your chasing bigger power your going to spend more money on another turbo, another Intercooler and pump mods before you see anywhere near 155kw.

You will love the 3" though.

added factory Turbo & Intercooler (off a 2006 motor that had hydraulic'd)
added a 3" straight through exhaust

only running 8lb boost - (factory)
putting out about 116Kw now

I just fitted a Redback Exhaust to my 4.2, engine was stock with factory exhaust. System I bought came with dump pipe, straight through with no muffler.
I fitted it myself, everything lined up good and seems to be excellent quality. I haven't had it Dyno tuned yet, but the difference is already impressive, ute is quicker and sounds awesome. The turbo seems to wind up quicker.

Today I did the EGR block and removed the butterfly from the intercooler, didn't notice any difference in power, but getting it tuned soon to hopefully see better results.

Hi Nev, I can highly recommend Chris Dalton from Dalton Engineering in Wood St South Geelong to tune your TD42T, he is a great guy and will get a great result for you. tell him what you want and he will get it for you. Very well priced and an honest Tune. Make sure you have fitted you manual Boost COntroller before you go there and he will sort it out for you.

Oops, my bad. Should of picked up on that. A little optimistic maybe.
Will go with the exhaust and see how I go, planning to fit a front mount down the track as the car doesn't have one (early model GU) but need to save.
Also just to check have you guys just gone straight through (no cat and no muffler)?
Any recommendations for a brand of boost controller or stick with something like turbosmart?

It's funny you should mention Dalton's, I went him a saw him yesterday after coming highly recommended from work mates. The ute's going in on Tuesday, see how it turns out. He's just around the corner from me too which is an added bonus.

Cheers nev, have had a bit of a look around on the net but have also been into AAA exhausts just near mine where he quoted me $800 for a custom 3 inch straight through exhaust and dump pipe. Have heard good things about them so will more than likely go with them.

The Redback exhaust was $1040 delivered from Queensland to Victoria, I didn't shop around locally, but that was the best deal I found online from a reputable company. I've had it tuned this week, which included dyno tuned, boost increased, fuel + idle adjusted and manual boost controller fitted. Cost $330 and the results are fantastic, it's like a different car. Much more torque, faster and he said to expect the same if not better fuel economy, attached is the dyno readout.

Cheers for the reply, good to know it's not to loud and the gains look good, original output is the same as mine so will be interesting to see what sort of power I get once it's dyno'd with a different brand of exhaust.
Will make sure I pop the dyno readout up on this thread.

Darrens gu I think has one muffler.
My na td42 was louder with stock exhaust.

I can see a trip to Geelong coming on once my exhaust & gauges are fitted.

How much boost and what size Tyers are you running

This is my tune dyno'd at JPC with 3 inch system with no muffler (think I may change this) for $450

33's and 4.11 diffs.

The turbo is too big and takes a little to spool up.

Just wondering about the $450 vs the $330 that Nev paid. Is there normally that much variation between tune up places? A case of big city 'tax’? or just that different setups take different amounts of time? Daltons are looking good to me both pricewise & recommendation-wise.

No my exhaust cost $450 for complete 3 inch system and the first dyno tune I got done cost $330..

When I took the car back the other week to check out the new engine it only cost $120 as it was perfect and did not need touching.

I'm running 33's, can't remember what he increased the boost to, I'll ask him next time. He said he sets it at a safe level that gives extra torque and power without compromising economy / wear & tear.
