Which clutch to buy?

My clutch is starting to play up, I think.

It did slip once about month ago when I gave it a bit to get going in H1 when I should have been in L2 or 3.
It feels like its slipping and grabbing once or twice when I start moving particularly noticeable when turning as well, the other day it had a vibration and the engine was moving like something was off centre and out of balance.

It drives OK, doesn't slip but I think that is where the problem is.

So what to get for it?

It's a 4.2TDi 2005 year model.

Any reviews on what to install and cost of the parts would be a help.

There are a few options available.

Exedy safari tuff
NPC 6x6
4terrain.

Each of these for your application will do the job well and pedal feel won't change. Do a little shopping around to see who can give you the best price on those options.

I have the safari tuff and was told the pedal feel would be a nightmare but only noticed it slightly for a week and its such a minuet difference but highly recommended for towing and reliability.

Surprised we've had no other brands spoken about. What about OEM? Safari talk of more clamping force, that is a good thing?.

For the cost the above options are the go over oem. They all have a higher clamp pressure than standard. The npc uses the same clutch disc as the exedy. I am not aware of which clutch disc the 4terrain use.

Thanks mate, will probably head this way. A mates son has had a lot to do with skylines etc and found the exedy were not up to the task in those cars suggested I do some research on the internet. Seems the 4x4 ones are better.

I can not find clutches on Patrol-a-part, am I missing something?

Item no. 290588654168 is a 4 terrain clutch.

No doubt about it eBay is handy for car bits. That autoelecac in Bairnsdale is a great example.

How did you go with this Macca?

Well it's been an interesting couple of days. Been pointed towards a exede HD not a Safari Tuff as they are too aggressive. Either engaged or disengaged no in between. Then found a gear box / diff specialist who owns a 4.2 GU . He is old school and fits OEM, he does not like the after market stuff saying it causes other components to fail. So he is fitting a new Nissan clutch, rear main seal etc on Monday. See how we go.

That's interesting as that has not been my experience with the safari tuff.

It would be interesting to know his theory behind what else an aftermarket clutch causes to fail???

For your application the eom will be fine though.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

Was heading to the exede, other mechanics I know have all said stay with OEM as my Ute has done over 200000klm on the original so why change? I'm a bit conservative I suppose and use genuine Nissan parts where I can, filters, bushes, bearings etc. As to what other damage, I will ask him to elaborate.

i swapped from a standard clutch to the exedy and it did feel like a on off switch until I got used to it and after jumping back into my mates ute with a standard clutch the exedy craps all over the oem and my old girl has 450+km on the standard gearbox with no dramas at all

I put in the safari tuff clutch when the motor was swapped out 2 years ago and its never missed a beat. It did take a little getting used to compared to the oem clutch, but that only took a couple of days.

Extreme Outback

The new OEM clutch is fitted, the other one was nearly down to the rivet's so was a good time to replace it and the pedal was "hard" not that I thought it was unusual.

There were no broken springs but they were loose in the plate, that causes a lot of the low rev noise / chatter in the gear box, so I'm told.

It drives completely differently, smooth, quiet, softer pedal just nicer to use.

All in all I am very happy to have done this job before anything else got damaged.

The mechanic said the original clutch had copped a beating and "I had got my moneys worth". 206000 klm through god knows what before I got my hands on it then some good trips, long and short, as well as work it has had a workout. He was very impressed with its longevity.

So tonight I am one very happy Nissan Patrol owner.

I got around 250k out of my standard unit and the clutch plate was ok the pressure plate had started to loose its tension and couldnt hold 25psi :).

I don't know about pressure plate tension. What is stock? or the aftermarket plate tension? At 25 was yours slipping?

Well it started slipping at less but it certainly couldn't hold the extra power and torque.
