Do you have a winch mate ?
Assuming you do, some of the essentials...
Recovery hitch to slide in where tow tongue goes as tow balls can kill.
Snatch strap, tree trunk protector, rated d shackles and recovery points ( threedogs is the man for these ).
There is a huge list of what to take,,,, have a search and you should find it,
also a very detailed camping list as well
What about brands to use and brands to stay away from. Lots of kits on eBay.
Personally I'd stay away from the cheaper stuff doesn't seem to last, other than that look for rated gear ,
vendor sponsors here Iron Man have A recovery Kit as do all the BIG 3 ARB,TJM and Opposite lock.
Always buy the best you can afford these are safety items, learn how to use them properly and
NEVER ,NEVER USE A TOWBALL AS A RECOVERY POINT. Keep your gear clean and inspect when washing
etc and turf any suspect gear, this include winch cable and shackles as well. Exhaust jack is useful if sand driving a lot
Also a decent portable compressor is handy in more ways than one
X2 with 3dogs, I personally think a shovel is a mans best friend. It should be #1 on the list.
Toilet roll never go bush without it :D
I am in the same situation, I searched around a bit but I couldnt find if any meetings have be organized where things like how safely use winch, etc have been discussed. Maybe we should organize one?
If you want info talk to/join one of the many clubs. I know a bloke in the Mitsubishi club who was telling me about their driver training weekends that cover all that sort of info
depends on where you are, heaps of clubs in each state but you can also tee up a meet with members here wo can also run you through the basics as well.
Duct tape and cable ties
Best thing to do is join a club with the same interests as yourself be it touring or weekend trips,
most will have a driver awareness course as part of your joining fee, this way you're taught to
a standard that is recognised Aust wide. They will also inform you on what you need to carry.
Agree with Steve4wdin a shovel should be your best friend on most recoveries, the more shovel work
the easier to extract yourself. The main aim is to have fun and enjoy, getting bogged is half the fun. lol
I'm new to the 4x4 thing myself.....post a list when you have it all sorted :)

I did this on our Knockwood trip, the camp weren't very happy with me.
I knew I shouldn't have but my will just wasn't strong enough and went any way.
Although I made it back safely (albeit 3 hrs later) oh yeah midnight drive.
I had the camp out looking for me.
Communications were down.
I wasn't happy with myself as weren't the camp with me.
Point to my story, things can go wrong very quickly out on the tracks and with no one to help could end tragically.
