Best way to stop rear wheels rubbing on flares?

Gday guys...

On my way up to the cape and with the patrol fully loaded, these new wheels are starting to rub on the flares in the rough roads. So far just between bourke and longreach but im worried it'll get worse from cairns up.
Currently running koni shocks and dobinson springs for a 2inch lift. And mickey Thompson (233/11.5) 285/75/16 with neg 13 offset.

Im thinking either new springs with a higher load rating. Or airbags in the coils. Not sure what's going to be best/easiest. Probably will have to get whatever it is in cairns on Saturday.

Whats going to be the best to stop it wearing out new tyres and a hole in the guards?

Extending the bump stops will also help.

If your car is sitting so low on the suspension that the tyres are rubbing on the gaurds over bumps then you definately need heavier spring rates or air bags in the rear coils. If you get desperate I have seen photos of people filling the coil springs with tennis balls to increase the spring rate!
While you're under the car inspect the top spring mounts on the chassis for cracks, known weak spot.

If the problem is getting worse as you travel then this could well be your trouble.

Have a good look mate. It can get ugly.

If you have so much weight that the springs are sagging beyond serviceability then swap them ut if you can or install some bags as you have suggested. Or loose some stuff;)

Can you posta pic of the side view of your car loaded please mate to show us how it is sitting. Also some specs on what your running in terms of springs and lift.

If its sitting ok and also traveling well just scrubbing stuff out then maybe grab a couple of cheap +10 offset rims for the back just for the trip and pit them on the back where the scrubbing it. This would alter the clearance by 23mm and positive 10 is standard Nissan Offset

So far only scrubbing on the rougher sections at higher speeds. I had a quick look earlier couldn't anything wrong. Ill have a better look in daylight.

Its only scrubbing at the top so I dont know if changing the offset will help too much. Thats why I was thinking springs or bags.

Whats involved in adjusting bumpstops?

Even in those photos it looks like it wouldn't be any higher than standard.

Yeah it's looks pretty low.

Changing the offset will put the tyre inside the flare and it may well clear the inside edge and allow the tyre up into the wheel arch.

If your running without a lift maybe its time bud;) what brand springs have you got.

In his sig it says he has a 2" if he does and going by those photos it looks like he is running factory springs loaded to the hilt. I'm with everyone else heavier coils or bags and inspect the spring mounts.

Yea x4. Bags are awesome. Keeps a nice smooth ride when empty but gives the ability to load em up.
If unavailable then as YNOT said, stuff your springs full of tennis balls. You'll need to extend the spring first though, so Jack the body up and stuff em in. A quick wrap with race tape to ensure none pop out (unlikely but some people say they have seen them pop out) and away you go..
The tennis balls work like a make shift air bag, won't allow as much flex, but will fix your scrubbing issue..

You on corrugated roads or blacktop? Could it be shock absorber fade? Does it do it after you've stopped for a while allowing the fluid in the shocks to re-constitute? Is it bouncing onto the guard or sitting at the same level?
I'm guessing springs aren't rated high enough for the load though.

He mentioned Koni shocks in the original post so I wouldn't think fade would be the issue, but you never know.
I wouldn't recommend extending bump stops to fix the issue.
Edit, Dobinson shocks not Koni's.

Little about me: 23years old, Currently working as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in Avionics for Regional Express. Living at home until I can afford to buy a place (might be a while now after this purchase). Girlfriend of 12months who isnt overly enthusiastic about camping /4wheel driving but comes along on the agreement I find her a toilet, and if its over two days, there has to be a shower handy.

Im looking at doing a lot of weekend trips around the area (Wagga, NSW) and hopefully in the next 18months Im looking at doing the Cape if we can get up there!

So either you have way too much gear in teh car or your Kings Springs are too light for the trip mate. Consider a pair of HD springs into the back then take you current springs with you or pick them up on the way home and fit them for general use and the HD springs for heavy touring.

Or Air Bags

change the set up it will only get very costly the further you go.
where are you atm, may know someone for you to speak to.
looking at pic either airbag it or change rear springs. other components are suffering
as well

Quick call to arb, set of old man emu coils for the rear just shy of $350 supply only. Install isnt overly difficult is it? Jack it up, remove wheel, compress old spring and remove?

Longer bump stops something that would just be an off the shelf item?

There ya go. Good out come. But do check top spring plates for cracks.

Nah mate you won't even need a spring compressor. If you can take both back wheels off together by supporting the chassis then undo the sway bar and the bottom of the shocks and drop the diff down. Plenty of room. Watch you brake line for stretch.

If you can get it on a hoist you'll be done in less than an hour.

Not for 2" lift anyway....

Mine was doing the same thing, but only in the giant holes on the Eastern Sides of the Bigger Dunes in the Simpson, and I have way more air between my tyres and flares, but it was fully loaded with 176Litres of Fuel, 60Litres of water, and all the rest of the gear for four....

undo shocks & rear draglink at the bottom only, brake line will be fine, take wheels off & jack one side of the diff up with another small jack, coil will fall out, do same on the other side, 30 min & done, don't fit air bags as it stress's the top spring hangers, weak link in GU's, common failure often brought by air bags, aftermarket ones are better, lift the suspension 2" add 1" spacers, this will level the ride under load & make it comfortable to drive

New springs fitted today by ARB townsville. Sensational guys there. Good service and done me a good deal. Old man emu coils. +200 kgs constant load. $360 fitted.

Ended up gettingba call from my local arb dealer. He'd justvrang the shop to see how it was going while hes on holidays, heard about my story. Rang me to see if he could be of assistance as he was near by. Great service I thought!
