HID Projector headlamp kits to suit GQ and GUs

Hi there as some of you may know I just recently set up a business selling and installing HID projector kits to suit mainly GQ and GUs but I can pretty much fit them in anything providing there's room. Like any HID kit in standard lights there not technically legal but as there a projector and not just HIDs bolted into reflectors which give HIDs a bad name these aren't blinding to oncoming traffic and look just like the lights you see in new luxury cars. I don't sell any bulbs other then 4200k to 5000k as once you get past 5000 you loose usable light and 6000k on wards does really irritate oncoming traffic.

I've been using these for about 8 months now and I'm very happy with the lights and to this day I've never been flashed and I do a lot of night driving. As they have a really sharp cut off there really less lightly to blind oncoming traffic then upgraded halogen bulbs. There are 3 projector options but that may change as I get into doing more types of vehicles.

For the 7 inch round H4 light that goes in the GQ the prices are below. I only use the Britrax Poly carbonate lens for these if I do the retro fits but if you choose to do the install yourself they can be fitted to anything.

The projector kit is $300 which includes

2.5inch Bi-xenon projectors (add $50 if you want 3 inch projectors)
shrouds (these aren't visible in these kits as there cut down to nothing but they hold the angel eyes in)
Angel eyes and drivers (white or orange) this way you can use them as parkers or indicators. Available in LED +$30 a pair
Ballasts (35 watt) I also have 50 watt but there very bright which can upset oncoming motorists.
D2S bulbs in 4300K or 5000K (Add $100 if you want Osrams instead which I only sell in 4150K)
H4 plug and play wiring loom.

I now keep the 7 inch GQ headlights here fitted with 2.5 and 3 inch projectors pre fitted ready to go. The only thing that's not done is the lens isn't fitted so it's just a matter of putting the angel eyes in to suit and fit the lens and there ready to go. The 2.5 inch projector version is $650 including freight and the 3inch version is $720 including freight and both have a pair of led angel eyes as standard now. Compared to a pair of HID spotlights these are pretty cheap and something that can be used all the time not just on a road when there's no other traffic.

Now the GU has a couple more options.

The first is similar to above. the projector kit is $300 which includes

2.5 inch Bi-xenon projectors

Ballasts 35 watt. I have 50 watt also but there very bright which can upset oncoming motorists.
Angel eyes plus invertors (available in white or orange) you can have either a parker or indicator) + $30 for LED angel eyes

These kits are a lot easier to install and can be done at home if your confident enough to throw a light in the oven for 7 minutes on 150 degrees and separate it, screw the projector in, dab a couple of bits of glue on the shroud to hold it in place and repeat the process. It only takes a couple of hours to install or I can do the install for $100.

The angel eyes in these pictures aren't the ones I'm using and some now have a protective cover (depending on size) so they don't need to be wired in like this one is. The ones in the above picture of the 7inch insert is what i'll be using in everything.

This is option 2 which is only really an option for GUs at this point. Although in the next couple of weeks I'm going to put a set in a 7 inch insert to see how they look. Here is some pictures of a custom 3 inch projector set up which I only recently did. With this kit I'll sell all the gear you need to do it plus send detailed instructions with pictures but I wont attempt to do this set up without the vehicle plus the labour involved in doing this set up would make these very expensive headlights especially now that I can get a bolt in 3 inch projector kit. These are well known as the best projector set up you can get for right hand drive vehicles. I'm hoping the custom 3 inch bolt in projectors will come very close to these if not the same. If I can successfully fit these into a 7 inch H4 insert then I can do these without the car as I have jigs made up and being a round light it's not a critical to get the light straight like when fitting to a GU or 100 series.

This is low beam and you can see they have a nice spread for spotting animals and a clean cut off. These don't reflect off the road signs either are the cut off prevents this.

After a lot of enquiries about devils eyes I now stock them to suit the 3 inch projectors in Red, blue, purple, green and yellow. These are a full halo like the angel eyes only they fit behind the projector. There $50 a pair with the drivers to run them. It's the blue in the centre of that light which is the devils eye. It's the only picture I have of them at the moment as I've never installed them yet. When I actually install a few I'll get some better photos. I think the above picture is to much colour and makes them look cheap but with just the red or blue in the centre they do look nice.

Bigger projector = more light?

Sort of. The 2.5 inch projectors have a longer distance on highbeam but the 3inch projectors have a wider beam all round but not quite as good a highbeam as the light is more spread.

Hi Mate, Do you have fitting instructions for these. Do you use your stock reflector to mount this into... Will Om for more details

What type of 4wd are you refering to mate? I'm in the process of doing ones for the GU. I have all the pictures but the GUs are really easy and now I have locators made up for our roads there easier again.

With the 7inch round ones I don't have instructions as I've made jigs, use a laser level and use glues that aren't available to the general public. So how I fit them would be no good for a one off install. They can be fitted at home but to buy the right glue and gun for the 2 component glues to do it you would need to be fitting a dozen lights to make it viable. Some people choose to use urathane and liquid nails but it's not something I'd recomend.

These are the glues I use and to get the hole in the middle of the 7inch lights exact you need a jig as there is no way of lining up the holesaw otherwise.

These lens are also held in with a double sided tape which can be tricky to get off without damaged the poly carbonate lens.

In that case yes I'll have some instructions made up soon. The GUs are very easy to do yourself. The wiring side of it is plug and play and the projectors just screw in and are self located with my locating sleaves. There is no cutting of the light or the 4wd to fit these kits. I'll also PM you a link you may be interested in.

The GQ kits I do all in house so all you need to do is fit the whole light to you 4wd and fit the wiring loom which is almost plug and play. I cut the light, fit and align the projector and fit the lens back on.

I'm really tempted.

There more water proof then most lights as there fully sealed but like every light they all have a little breather on the top of them which I don't seal off. You would have to be under water for them to fill up though the breather though.

So if i'm reading the pricing correctly its as follows for a GQ

$300 for the the projector kit (per pair?)
$100 for the inserts
$50 for the boots........ sorry not sure what these are exactly, so you'll need to enlighten m.
$150 for your labour and trubles
So looking at total $600 for the pair?

Oh and must forget extra for freight I guess?

Please correct me if im wrong........... could be an option as long as the good old tax man is kind to me this year, otherwise may take a little while longer

The boots are CV boots which cover the back of the projector and help seal it from water and dust. You'll see what I mean in the picture below. $600 will cover everything but freight.

Hi Irvs no thats not a stupid question and your right there only cosmetic. The angel eye is just another name for a parker really which goes around the outside of the projector. A devils eye is a coloured bulb that goes behind the projector giving you a red, blue, yellow, green or purple eye.

The LED angel eyes have finally arrived. I'd bought about 4 different brands and had done a bit of testing before finally sticking with these. They are a really even colour all the way around and orange is actually orange plus there very bright.

Installed one of Micks kits in my GU8 over the weekend, 3 inch projectors with Osram bulbs and 55w ballasts.

Job was a bit bigger then i initially thought, could easily be done faster having done it once now. I think most people would be okay with it as long as you have a slightly technical/mechanical aptitude and know how to crimp or solder wires together. These new LED angel eyes will definitely be the go, i got the little fluorescent tube ones as wasn't willing to wait for the LED's and managed to snap one, so ended up pulling em both out and am just running without em.

Once installed just had to jack the lights up a bit with the adjusters as the cut off was about 4m in front of the car. Boy do they make a big difference once adjusted, low beams is crystal clear white light with a really nice even spread, As in Micks photos of his car the cut off is very defined. High beams are amazing, no need for spotties with em i reckon, projects the beam right down the road and also lights up the sides very well for spotting roos, emus and even cows where i live.

Ill try and get some photos in the next few days and post them up.

Thats good to here is got it all fitted with minimal dramas Tim. The first time I fitted a kit it took me pretty much all day to get it right. I think it's only a matter of time before the LED angel eyes make the CCL rings obsolete.

The Osram bulbs really make a huge difference to what from what i've seen too.

does the original reflector still do anything to focus these HIDs, apart from locating the projector etc, or is the focussing and low beam/high beam thing all done within the 'projector'?

There's no comparison one is just a bulb fitted to a reflector which throws light everywhere and but where you need it on the road. These kits replace the bulb with a HID projector which the bulb sits in which controls the light and aims the light and gives a clear cut off. So you don't annoy oncoming traffic. You get the same light quality as a new BMW or Lexus. If you read my first post it explains it better.

On the shrouds yes they are cosmetic but without them you see an exposed projector and wires plus there is no way of holding angel eyes.

No that's why a lot of people ask me to paint the reflectors black. All the light goes threw the projector only. The reflector is no longer used.

The projector is fixed and the adjustment is done by the headlight adjusters just like they are from factory. There is no need to focus them the low/high beam is controlled by a solenoid which opens and shuts an eyelid inside the projector.

Cheers mick, So the bulb is still replaceable within the projector (so say if I had a 35w globe I could change it to a 55w if I wanted too) and when you turn on the low beam the globe turns on and your high beam switch just supplies the solenoid which then opens the projector up a bit more and let's all the light out and that's how you get such a precise cut off? Just trying to wrap my head around all this, I like knowing how stuff works.

You can put a 55 watt bulb in it but you need a 55 watt ballast as well.

The cut off is done with a laser cut piece of stainless which is part of the projector.

Do you sell a projector and lamp/ballast combination that would equal the performance of a quart2 halogen bulbed Lightforce SL240?

I guess I'd have to settle on fixed rather than 2oom so would look for parallel beam - I'd be looking to fit it with a mounting bracket to go onto one of the remote window mounts used by shooters. All of the shooting spotlights I have seen look just like the 'old style' equivalent. So mugs like me will buy them, I guess, or because it is cheap, it allows focusing (not sure they do) or ?

The gain is the small si2e, and ideally the right colour light (could I wish for more light?)

The downsides would be weight and $$?

No there not even close. There high beam is equal to a 70 HID Lightforce XGT with spread and nearly the same distance.:smile:

There not really designed to go in a spotlight though. You would be better off converting your light you have now to a 70 hid bulb and ballast rather then trying to fit a projector. It could be done but you would need a projector designed for a fog light which is smaller and doesn't have the high/low solenoid in it.
