Bread will be scarce and stale so wraps for the win for lunches.
AB. (Caps on) DO NOT TAKE YOUR FRUIT AND VEGIS FROM YOUR GARDEN! YOU WILL LOOSE THEM ALL AT THE ROAD BLOCK AT RENMARK.
All fruit and VEGIS must be precooked or purchased in Berri.
I have had to flip my camper at the road block for searching! Serious!
Thanks AB for your list.
Good to know what people are taking as I don't want to be the one who holds everyone up because I wasn't properly prepared.
Front recovery points I have had on the wish list for ages so now seems the perfect time to get them!!!
Dammit, no roast Thorpdale potatoes in the Simpson Desert then...
When we went as far as Oondandatta a couple of years ago we had fish and chips in the desert!!
hahahahahaha I wonder if they are still there!!
It is 504 km from Mt Dare (last fuel) to Birdsville (first fuel) There is nothing between that resembles a supply of anything except sand!!!
Magazine article says around 180 litres for a full size 4x4
That 504 is using the French Line-basically a straight line and the shortest feasible route.
You wind up at Poepples Corner, turn north for 20K then east on the QAA line to Birdsville. You need a Queensland Parks permit for QAA-and they (Q.Parks) don't seem to now how to get the permit--they told me to call the local ranger!!!
Giving the fuel usage some thought guys, we may decide to detour along a couple of the side tracks if the traffic is heavy and we want to mix it up a little. THere are a couple of Land Marks worth viewing. The link above indicates that Daulhousie to Birdsville is 438kms and as Dr Gary indicates the distance to Mt Dare should also be considered.
Mt Dare are recommending carrying 150lt of fuel and usage will be between 120 and 140lt for a diesel assuming a good safety margin. Plenty of folks quoting 95lt used though!. I will probably carry at least a jerry can on the roof which will then give me a total of 195lts which should be heaps.

Having a bit of a read around and most folks are averaging less than 19lt/100 and we all should do it easily. Taking a little extra each should allow us to do some diversions given we are in no hurry.
Looking forward to it.
Here is another good write up and some excellent pics from when the TVan Owners Group "did the Simmo" in 2011.

Is anyone choosing a double crossing--Birdsville to Mt Dare and back??
For Queenslanders that would save around 1,000 km. There is no easy way to get from Gold Coast to Mt Dare, and across the Simmo is the shortest. hmmm
Initially there was a large group from QLD that were going to do a double but they have all dropped off over time. I intended to do the double with them but due to lack of interest and other things I am now heading straight to Daulhousie and crossing West East only.
You are right your probably save 1000kms but not sure you'd save any time or fuel?? Birdsville to and oodnadatta are fast dirt roads.
under 30 days folks!!!!!
Yeah... tell me about it
I got my truck back last week with all the new bar work done, Brembo brakes fitted, under tray tool boxes fitted etc etc.
Finished the Driving Lights, Cabin wiring, HF and other Comms work yest.
Start on the Mud flaps, 2nd battery and Winch wiring today.
Gotta try and finish before Friday when the new camper arrives as I'll need to stop working on the Patrol and fit that out before I leave.
... might have to pack a 3 boxes of cable ties, 20 rolls of duct tape and a good sense of humour
Starting to hit home how close we are to going!
Management are now asking weekly intervals of the dates as well...lol
Yep me too, the troll was in all last week fixin the small bits and pieces, gearbox mount, wheel bearings replaced, swivel hub rebuild, wire the solar panel in, fitted the tent again today and started sorting out all the bits to take. It goes back to the mechanic in the morning to finish wiring in the solar controller, fit the travel buddy into a removable frame so I can mount it on the twin floor or remove it easily. Then just double check it all before going to the auto sparky to fit the rear power panel and check the electrics that I have done, I have to go this way as I'm just running out of time to do it myself.
Bugger, it's still in the workshop but I pick it up tomorrow, may need a bank loan :(
Getting excited and overwhelmed at the same time. Lots to do....can't wait to be on the road so all the organising is over!! hahaha
Me and AB got our sub tanks put in on the weekend. Mine is now wired up but I've gotta take it somewhere to get the fuel gauge on the sub tank wired into the switch
I'm so looking to getting on the road too, I have put my departure date forward to the Wednesday prior now as I can't wait :)
Shit, that means you'll pass me around Giles or The Olgas.
Save me a good spot at Dalhousie/3 O'clock... which raise a good point.
Where are we going to camp/meet up? I believe Dalhousie can be limited for spots that time of year and that 3 O'clock is the better camping, shady etc albiet no crappers.
Just about ready to roll out

What did you do for a flag pole and where did you get the flag
I was going to use PVC conduit but it's way too flexy. Andy's fibreglass rods are too short... doh!
Old fishing rod!? Lol.
