Warn make good winches but they don't seal them very well. Reckon if your going to see water is worth striping and sealing the thing whatever it is.

To water proof my aldi winch, I pumped a lot of silicone into the end, and covered it in a bit of lightly greased glad wrap, taking care to leave the seals and screws exposed. I then just sat the
drum on it and pushed it down a bit. I left it to dry, lifted the drum, peeled the glad wrap off, greased the silicon and whacked it all together. Have done swamp and river crossings and not had a drop of water enter the winch.
