Something about this long, arduous process Stevo has gone through tells me that I don't think we'll see the "driving Steve" of old!! lmao
Just tap it in ... taaapp it in ....

Looks fantastic Steve. Well done mate.

Oh you are such a good chap, id so hoped you had not forgotten, mate as soon as the thing is registered, im heading over to your place, as i will need to get my "rear end" sorted before doing any sort of off-roading other than the beach, maybe some other forum members with the right "skills" may come along to assist ?
Ill bring the car, some ideas, and the beers :trink13:
Yes mate, its one thing to spend 95% of the time driving for 5% fixing, but when its all 100% work and no play for so long, its easy to get sick of working on it, so the risk of creating more work soon, is not very appealing.
Im pretty sure everyone will understand me taking it easy for a little while, i think i will enjoy just driving it, and being able to go on forum trips etc again, plus im a bit out of off rd practiice now as well.
Its been a painfull journey so far, and this thing will owe me far more than its worth, and im not just talking about $$, i bought it to "use", so i guarentee i wont just be just taking "all" the chicken tracks as it won't be fun, and its just not me.
I just may not be so keen to be attepting to follow where you and the duck go !
He-he, thanks mate, Mal (hardcase harris) and myself came up with a rear end "slider" set up for the back of GU wagons a while ago, its a 100% bolt on design, and you retain all your factory rear bar and lights, but are protected just as your sills are protected when you have sliders.
Its a great design, and i recon would have sold like hot cakes ,but unfortunatly Mal had to move away before prototype construction began. :frown:
Scotty (bigrig) kindly offered to assist in construction of some sort of rear protection (his home made bar is pretty sweet), id buy a full on rear bar, but im in the same boat, i just can't justify the coin they ask for them at this stage.
That would be really good. would sell a tonne if it got off the ground.
Either way this is what i had really liked. Its not my design nor am i claiming it to be, just a bar i saw and liked.

It does have a swing away tyre but if it was me i would leave it fixed to the door. Not having a dig at your idea, just a different perspective.
cheers
Lachlan
Id much prefer something like that Lachlan, i have a black tube front bar, black tube sliders , so a tube rear bar would look sweet, plus give better clearance than what i had in mind.
The only thing i really don't like about that bar, is the round hole mesh in the sides, but that would be a easy fix, i too would leave the spare on the back door.
Scotty is a top bloke, but I think id be pushing the friendship a bit far asking him to do something like that, looks like a fair bit of work, so how much did the guy want to make you one of those mate ?
And do you know if it is bolt on ,or weld on to the chassis (cos id never be happy with weld on chassis brackets) ?
The mesh would be an easy fix, im not overly keen on it either. The bloke want something like $2000.
It would look sweet with the full bar work all round. Im pretty sure it was a bolt on, im the same, not keen on welding my chassis.
I have been thinking about it for a while and it shouldnt be to hard, if you dont do the mesh side but paint behind it black. After all its really only 2 steel tubes with a metal plate spacer in between. i dont see why you couldnt make use of the holes in the end of the chassis rails, similar to the way bigrigs bar is mounted (ive read his build thread and seen it in person)
Car came home today :animierte-smilies-t , it looks quite brilliant all buffed up, its now exactly what i hoped for, and out in the sun it looks simply amazing at certain angles, im very happy with how its turned out !
Another short phone video, but out in the daylight this time.....

Looks great mate!
Very flash mate, looks brilliant!
Nah, then it would be way too hard to tell if its still the right way up !
(ha-haha)
Got a windscreen and the rear cargo area glass fitted today , basicly all the glass bits that need to be "glued" in by a pro
Happy to say the everything fitted perfect and easy, just 100% confirmation that the body is back to the exact shape it should be, its amazing how much better the car looks even with only a couple of small bits added !
So i guess the rebuild has begun
Looks great, bet you're pleased
Very sparkly mate...... Looks superb, gotta love that
Don't stroke it, TAP it!!!!.....
sparkle sparkle!!!

That looks brilliant. You must be so happy.
Thanks mate, i know you would, your offer to help with the rear bar is more than enough, and don't under estimate how grateful i am for that, and as i am a fussy bugger, i know it won't be 5 min work.
After seeing your workshop, i think you would feel rather claustrophobic at my place anyway, i have to move my car outside to open the doors, and if i put the front & rear bars on, i cant shut the garage door with the car inside. :frown:
Ill be giving the rebuild a good smack over easter,(weather permitting), if i get enough done, ill book for the inspection (written off vehicle) next week, these places normally have a very long waitng list (sometimes months), so you have to book in before its "all" finished, if i get stuck preparing for this date, ill put the call out for assistance.
Thanks mate, as with most things, it looks even better in the flesh Murray, im happy it still looks white too, the glare off it is insane when the sun is on it, you can't really look at it without sunnies
Ive got most of the inside done, just got the door trims and the cargo area to finish...
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/today8.jpg
Made a start on the outside, bolted the gaurds on, used all stainless bolts this time as the last two times id removed the gaurds, the bottom bolts had all rusted....
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/today4.jpg
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/today5.jpg
Replaced the gaurd side indicators with clear versions, i think they look much better...
Factory orange....
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/today3.jpg
Clear.....
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/today2.jpg
Headlights and grille all in....
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/today1.jpg
All the glass is fitted now, and all the window moulds , door handles etc...
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...d/today1-1.jpg
As the factory black vinyl was so expencive, i went for carbon fibre stuff on the sides...

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/today7.jpg
Its starting to look pretty good now, and almost looks like a car again.
I still find myself spending 20 min just looking at the paint after ive finished working on it, its so great to be happy with the car, and enjoy looking at it again
Sh1tHot Steveo just hope ya don't cry when ya get your first new bush pinstripe on it ;)
I trust you will be getting stripes :)
Yeh, i probly will shed a tear or two growler, i will really try and keep it mint for as long as i can, but just so you know im realistic, ive already ordered enough spare paint flake to be able to paint 2/3rds of the whole car again !
It aint never gonna be a soccer mum shopping mobile ! :049:
Oh yeh, i got some new treads for it as well, they are 305/70/16 KM2s, i also bought some factory GU alloys from another Steve on the forum (thanks steve) , these wont go on till its all registered, but should aid in getting me over things without damage (or get me further into things causing damage ?,lol)
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/treds.jpg
You mate are a mirrical worker, thats bloody great job you have done!
Great job, must be satisfying to see such a result from your hard work. Well done.
That looks fantastic..... From one extreme to the other.... The rusty bolt thing is a bit of a worry though!! Or is that just a "its been on the beach" thing??
Well yes i do like to do the beach trips, but its pretty much the way the GUs are designed, all the mud, sand and water ends up sitting in the bottom of the front gaurds, this is also a common place to find rust.
The bottom two gaurd bolts not only see all this muck, but the threads protrude through the bottom of the captive nuts in the sill, and so are exposed to "everything", the first time i removed these bolts the bolt heads snapped off (i thought, no big deal on a old car)
So I replaced them all with new bolts, and 12 months later when i went to remove them again (after the roll), they snapped off again, its only the very bottom 2 bolts that are a problem, but i thought i may as well replace "all" of the gaurd bolts with stainless, only because they came in a box of 50 or so. :)
Before i put the front passenger seat in, i fitted this folding meal tray id removed from a kia carnival, it has its own gas strut, so you just pull it and it pops up, push it down and it stays in the stow away position.

Seems to hold a fair bit of weight, more than enough for what my daughter will ever put on it, food, drinks, drawing, dvd player etc.
So when you finish do you wanna come down to Sydney and do my car, don't worry in my garage your lucky to open your door 2 get out, so you will feel right at home here :)
Looking good Steve
Good to see your on the home stretch and it's all starting to come together. After our chat the other night and until I read this thread, it was hard to understand the humongous task you took on. I think I would have given up a long time ago and just bought another one. But, your perseverance and patience shows in these pics. WELL DONE! and NO! you can't park that next too mine! It just looks too good! Looking towards seeing it all done Steve, and you back behind the wheel! and behind the camera for some nice shots of the finished product....
Thanks Todd, yeh it sucks having no space to work eh, having to pack everthing away each night wastes heaps more time.
Ill get back to Sydney one day , my brother lives down there as well, probly more likley ill come round and help drink some beers tho, (lol)............. anyway, you were "supposed" to come up here first remember !
Thanks steve, yeh if id have known what i was "really" in for, id never have started, but im very pleased with it now, i can get a little joy from it even now, by just walking around it watching it sparkle !
Yes ,my pic thread has suffered a lot with us not going to the nice places as we often would, not having the troll, has taken a toll, thats for sure.
Look forward to hitting some tracks with you in the near future Steve, im keen to see how your monster truck tyres go off road :hpfredgeorge1:
Unlucky about your car but it seems to be going good for you now. Good luck
Ive got a bit more done this week, ive been limited by the rain, so decided to install my onboard air compressor set up, im over doing the compressor in the bag thing (plus mine died)
During my rollover repairs, i kept thinking the big void in the LHR gaurd is a waste of space, and how good would it be to install a compressor hidden inside, i also wanted a air tank, ive still got plumbing and wiring to do, but this is what ive ended up with so far.......
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/02ard/tank.jpg
Its a tight fit, i went with a 9L tank, and twin TJM compressors, they are not the fastest or most powerfull of pumps, but are reliable (and i got them at the right price), having the tank should help them a little, i will put the pump/s "on" switch near the driving position (will have auto pressure cut out, when tank is full), that way ,i can turn pumps on and pre fill the tank "before" i stop to air up.
I also plan to put seperate fuses on each pump, and one way valves on each of the pump output lines (before the tank), that way the system will still pump up tyres ,even if one pump should fail, and air wont ever bleed back out through the pumps as well.
:trink13:
Thanks mate, i didn't even know later models came with seat trays, ill have to go to a stealership now and have a look now ! (thanks)
I dont think you would normally imagine the amount of room in the LHR gaurd, unless as i did, you already had the trims off, im pretty sure the Ti models have the rear A/C fan unit in this space ?
