It probably needs a good to run you may have to reco your injectors if she has been sitting for an extended period. I would certainly be changing your filters (engine and fuel), a nice fresh tank of diesel and some new oil give her a nice little run around the yard and see how she goes.
As above injectors

Reckon you'll open a body repair shop after you're done with your current project? you have more skills that half the smashies I know!
Keep up the good work, I wish I had half the guts to do less to my GQ.
Michelle, love, don't dispair. It ain't all bad.
Glow plugs don't give up the ghost reguarly. I doubt they need replacing. Is your GLOW PLUG TIMER working properley? Do you wait for it to click before winding over your motor?
Do you use your throttle lock instead of the exccellerator pedal for cold starting, then wind it down to idle?
Check both your air filters are clean and have not had a rat build a nest in there. This would choke the motor and cause excess Diesel Smoke.
Your Blue Smoke is unburnt Deisel, either caused by overfuelling or crook injectors.
Up here you can get exchange injector set for approx $400-$500. With instruction sheet how to fit yourself.
So your Shorty is a long way from being a pile of crap yet!!!
Tim
Yeah white smoke is raw diesel when it has been atomised. Overfuelling doesnt allow the fuel to burn completely hence the black smoke. I have thrown a link up in general mech for it its a good read and is sure to help everyone.
Thanks guys do ill check out the injectors, filters and oil already done, and ill drain that old deisel out and go from there, Tim I do let the glow plugs warm up and i use the peddle when i start her up, its all good just something ealse to add to the list lol
add to your list?? Damn, what's that like? I'm still in the novel stage..not expecting to get to the list stage for at least another 8mths LOL
Ok so here it comes.... Hubby wants me to sell my baby :( and my car and buy somthing more modden, so what i need to know is whats she worth? if any one can shed some light on that it woud be appereciated, so not ready to walk away from her yet!
after all the work and love youve put into her its priceless
keep going mate youve pulled her back from the brink
Say it's worth bugger all and won't get much in it's current state and you'll get to keep it, that's what I said to my wife and she just rolled her eyes and said typical..but I get to keep it LOL
DO NOT SELL IT ! THESE THINGS TAKE TIME , AND WITH YOUR DEDICATION IT WILL BE WELL WORTH IT!!!. Im doing an identical build to you mq shorty diesel, rusty, (but i can weld so im lucky) but i have to change motors too, upside is ill put the five speed and pwr steer in too, if there is anything i can help with let me know, theses awesome trucks should be savaed!!!, heres mine as it begins so you can see your not alone in your build (:..http://i1096.photobucket.com/albums/...n/IMG_2300.jpg
ian, have you seen my build (Bryans MQ/MK build), could really do with you taking a holiday to..i dunno, maybe Hawkes Bay NZ!! I can't weld, not a spanner monkey, auto sparkie and have not a clue.
Don't worry about michelle, she can't quit as she's my inspiration LOL
Michelle,
Let hubby read my reply. I beleive getting a later model Patrol may not be the answer for you guys. You still don't know what you a re going to get. At least if you finish your rig, you know what you have done so far.
If you sell you may get between $1500 and $3000 grand if it's running sweet, lookin good and complete with 50%tread on set of tyres. To get an average cond ition GQ will cost between $3500 and $6000, and a good GQ or later from $5000 upwards. So you are at least $2000 behind after selling yours, what's your car worth. And, is $1500 enough for all the work you have already put in to YOUR BABY?
Tim
You cant put a price on experience and good times
Gee some people pay $6 for a cup of coffee FFS ......
I spent along time doin my MK ute and it has to go as ive bought something thats a bit wifey friendly , auto with all the goodies (happy wife happy life...)
It hasnt sold yet and i aint given it away, that said im doin another patrol this time a shorty
I enjoy tinkering , the people i meet the help and assistance i get from forums and people and i try to help others where i can
I enjoy chasing bits n pieces and building to time frames or budgets, thats more fun than "Cheque book buying/building"
You cant put a price on stuff like that
Finish it,it wont break the bank and youll enjoy it more than a new "I dont wanna scratch it" car ...
Full agreement with MQ, I've got not a clue on what I'm doing but the amount of PMs, tips, hints and readjustments of clueless plans that has been passed on to me is worth more than I can put a figure on. Admittedly finding parts is friggen hard but when you do find that part, tis like the holy grail (until the next part).
A year down the track you'll be thanking your lucky stars you didn't cave in and buy a GU or something even more fragile.
well i am still about tho all i have done lately is put the canopie back on it has been way to cold and wet lol
Beauty Michelle keep it up ;-)
At least you still have it! Michelle.
Tim
Not much goin on at the moment but I have been useing her in the garden pulling out some old large shrubbs, she loves it :) she has even stopped blowing smoke must of just needed a good run :p
Ahh well worth keeping then ;-)
Tap, Tap.......Who's there?
So It's been a while.... any way my hubby won :( the ol girl goes.... But my little brother has bought her and picks her up friday, I will be sad to see her go but at least I get to visit and see her finished and not used as parts, Ill try up load some pics when he has finnished, or along the way, or better stil convince him he HAS to join the forum XD lol
Its always sad when family members move out. My 20yr old is parked around the side of house awaiting a new owner. lol
Michelle I am doing up an MK shorty, maybe I will start a thread like yourself some day, I must say I am sad your Hubby has made you get rid of it after all the hard work and elbow grease you have put into it.
She looks a million bucks compaired to how you found it in the 1st place..
Sad...... :(
Sent from the crapper while on tappa
such a shame michelle! you made so much progress, and its ashame to see you give in! make sure your brother checks in with progress, im sure everyone on here would appreciate seeing progress on such classic!
Oh well, ban him from the shed, get him inside doin the dishes, dont wanna ruin his dish pan hands ......................
If something is the wifes, ill let her make final decision to sell, i wont say "Its a great idea if we sell whats yours"
Im not that stoopid .................
Happy wife,happy life .........
I just bought her a toy,a 72 dub rag top,now she cant whinge im in the shed as often .......
Bumping this thread for my brother who has taken on the old girl to Finnish off :) lets hope he continues this thread for uss all
He also has lots of questions a lot maybe repeated but I'm sure you all won't mind ;)
hello all, this is not michelle its mat (her bro), as you all may remember i bought the troll off her a while ago, and planning on completing the old girl so all michelles hard doesnt go to waste, i may need some advise from every one along the way, like what doors are the same as the mq will a gq door fit, cheers mat
Hey Bro, if you haven't already found it, there is a section in the forum under 'General discussions' for each make of patrol. You may find your answers there or post a question where it is more likely to be read. Not everyone has followed Michelle's story.
Sorry to hear your saga Michelle, was so please to see another chick with greasy nails. Be sure and share your next project with us though, cause we have no doubt you will find one.
Regards, Thelma and Louise
