Hodge's new 4.2

Against my wishes and hopes the new exhaust didn't get rid of the rattle/noise thought to be my old exhaust... Mudski heard it yesterday too while he was in my car.
I just drove alongside a bloke in a 4.2 ute and at a set of lights he said my thrust bearing might be shot as he can hear it rattling big time every time I change gears ? Mind you he looked to be off his tree, and I hope hes not on the forum to read this lol.
Is there any other symptoms of this going, other than the noise ? Gears change smoothly and fine no dramas...

Imo. That didn't sound like a thrust bearing to me. Mine was cactus in the zd and it whined.
Yours just sound like driveline chatter.

Possibly engine mounts... Or has this already been mentioned?

Hey mate, I popped in briefly with a workmate on Thursday, but the guy there didn't know which one was which... I think it was the store owner I was talking to, it wasn't John, he was out somewhere. Now that the bullbar is on I need a set.

Fitted up a new stereo today, got rid of the ancient "Cassette" player. Bit of wiring and soldering and happy with the job.

Was gonna run the wires for the dual battery system from front to back but the farkin' rain put a stop to that so I called it quits not long ago. Was also gonna do the UHF unit.

Can you hear the noise when stationary? Does it disappear when you put the clutch in?

Nope, definitely not when stationary. Or when putting clutch in. Just tried this before across all revs etc.
The only time it sounds, is 1st gear, just after releasing clutch and applying a bit of throttle, same thing when going from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd but this is rare ... It also happens when I'm slowing down and don't down gear and engine has really low revs and is begging to be down geared...

So more of a growl type noise from the gearbox area?

Difficult to pin point exactly where from by that general area.
Stopped by Jonothans house today, he came for quick drive and he reckons it's the clutch and it's normal. His GQ had a very similar noise. How he described his, by labouring the engine at low revs and being lazy on the clutch, is exactly what provokes my rattle. . Mudski said the same thing about his neighbours GQ.

Yeah they have a common noise. Sounds like gear rollover noise.

Yeah I was reading some of those now, super common on Patrols and land cruisers too.
Thanks heaps for that, I'm pretty certain it's pin pointed now. Our work diesel mechanic told me it was gear chatter when I mentioned it to him. I suppose it's the same thing just different wording.

Blocked out the junk recirculator. 5 minute job. Boost kicks in a tad earlier. Happy days.

Ok next inline is the gauges. EGT is straight forward, from what I have seen, my exhaust has the bung there already. The Boost I can pickup from the small hose at the back of the factory intercooler, right ? Just put a T-ee in it, and bingo ?

As for the gauge/s and water gauge I was going to go with this redarc unit below. This way I get egt / boost & maybe water temperature in one unit. And most importantly (to me) water temps are as a numerical display. Which is what I want!

The temp display on this gauge is optional and i have to order the specific sender. One of these below.... WIll any of these work on the 4.2 ?

Also MUDSKI. I noticed the other day at JPC you had 2 separate redarc gauges ? Any reason you didn't go for one of these ???

I have three separate gauges mate. The boost/ egt sits between the speedo and tacho. The two on the pillar pod you see was the dual oil pressureand water temp and the other is the dual battery monitor.

The dearest one is the one I linked. Boost efgt and temp. Can be bad for $350-400. The others variants are below 300 I think...

My boost /egt gauge is McNally, the other two are Redarc. I prefer the McNally out of the two, theres too much to look at on the Redarcs, but McNally don't do the combo's I wanted...

They're just a simpler gauge. Dont get me wrong the Redarcs are good. But having both in the car, the McNally is easier to read at a quick glance while your driving.

Have a look at gloshift as well. They do a tri gauge with boost, water and oil. The boost is analogue while the water and oil are digital readout.

Will do my keeping my options opened. Just reading some reviews and a lot of redarc ones people are having issues with accuracy. Don't know wherether its the sender side of things or the gauge ...

Does this canister have a certain polarity ?? Can I swap these hoses around ? Would make a perfect fit. Lol

Reason I asked is if I could move that canister to the other side (compressor) side, I could use that space between the canister bracket and the battery tray/coolant overflow for mounting the BCDC , fuses etc... But to spin the canister around and mount it nicely I'd have to swap the hoses...

You can move the canister to where ever you want. As long as the hose are on the same way. Notice that top hose with the arrow too.

Damn! Didn't notice that arrow. I guess it has to be a certain way. I'll think of a way. Cheers mate.

I had the canister on the zd in a different spot. I just manipulated the steel pipes carefully.

So stupid question, diesel doesn't flow through those, it's just the fumes? So if I disconnect a hose fuel won't be gushing out ?
I can't remember having one of these on the CRD so don't know much about it.

It's a vacuum canister isn't it, to give more volume of vacuum (haha how's that for an oxymoron) for the brake and clutch booster???
