Keen to see the finished product though Dazz, will be a huge winner!
Mig will still have a heap of spatter. Not quite as bad as flux core but plenty. If you want spatter free you will need to tig it
How much did you take out of the body lift??
If your getting lots of spatter you need to spend a little more time on the setup. You wont get it spatter free but you can certainly have very minimal spatter when the welder is setup accordingly.
yeah my welder is a very basic model with 2 switches ( 1 - 2, hi - lo) and line speed. It is also only 140amps and i was welding 4mm plate so basically had it on High and line speed 8/10. I think if i slow the line speed down and slow the welding down, its already slow it may well reduce the splatter. I am satisfied that i got good penetration though which is the main thing at this stage
I remember now.. was just wondering if you could close the gap a bit by lowering the pipe down the plate a bit and then place a gusset above it to add more strength..
Also remember you want to pull a Flux core mig.. same as the stick..
When there is slag, you'd wanna drag..
Normal gas mig you push..
But also gas less you'll need to run hot.. if your worried about it dropping threw back off the heat and wire..
With that sorta gap full peno will not be an issue lol..
Very helpful thanks Kallen. I was pushing today. Cheers mate.
Here is a better pic of the gap I was dealing with. Not too much.

Looks good Darren. Can't wait to drive Mt Sunday with you!
Yeah the gap shown in the first pics is what it looked like after I cut the plates off to show the angle difference. That's how much I had to trim. Got them pretty close.
You've mounted them the same as I did on the troopy, I drilled and tapped 4 holes with 1/2" UNC thread,
in the corners of some 12mm square plate, then welded those plates [3] to the chassis then bolted the
steps to them. Must admit as you would know they are as strong as. You can jack the whole side off
the ground they are THAT strong.
No name cooking spray is way cheaper than anti splatter, smells better too LOL
Hi Mudrunner,
Please can you put up some more pics if you have them of the current positions of all the fuel lines and clutch etc and how you managed to mount them? I'm keen to add a snorkel and dual battery setup under the hood on the passenger side. The clips holding the current lines are all buggered on my GQ so I would see moving these as a win-win.
Cheers, Chris
Bugger sorry Chris I will sort out some pics for you mate

So did a bit to my weld on rack on Sunday. I am going to add a flat rack to the back so I can carry a bit of fire wood or whatever. The cross bars are there so I might as well.
This is how I bought the bar work
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...016/02/257.jpg
I cut it off that roof some time ago and have been planning it for ages. Time to get it done.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...016/02/258.jpg
So I'm going to add 5 bars running front to back then weld mesh on top of that. As I said, it will not change the height of the rack at all so I might as well.
I cleaned off the paint at the 5 points so I could weld the new tube on.
I test fitted the first one.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...016/02/259.jpg
So I don't have a notching machine but watched a pretty cool YouTube vid a few months ago which explained notching without a notcher well. Piece of piss!!
So. This is how it's done.
________________________
Measure your tube diameter.
My tube was 25mm.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...016/02/260.jpg
This system uses 1/3s. Divide the diameter of your tube into 1/3s. My tube is 25mm so 8mm is approx 1/3.
My tube needs notching at both ends so I ADD. 1/3 to both ends (16mm) and cut to length.
Put a mark on top and bottom of tube dead centre. (The longest part of the notch)
Now put a ring around the tube 1/3 back from the end (8mm on my tube)
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...016/02/261.jpg
Now place the tube in your cut off saw. Centre mark straight up. You want to set the angle of the cut to be end of tube at the centre line back to cutting on you 1/3 line on the side.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...016/02/262.jpg
Then spin the tube over and your bottom centre Mark will let you do the opposing cut.!!
Your Done!!!

Come up good I think. Need to clean up my welds and weld the mesh on top. Then strip all the paint off it and prime and paint ready to weld onto my roof!!

Looks very good Darren!
Throw a bit of expanded mesh on those bars mate you the smaller bits don't come threw and peirce your roof..
yeah i have a sheet of 50 x 75 mesh i think, it is behind the shed. had it for years. you know.... I'll need that one day! Went to grab it yesterday but found a bloody European Wasp Nest in the retaining wall behind the shed damn it! between me and the Mesh! The mesh is still where i store it! fark that!! I will drag it out after dark tonight maybe. But yeah always intended to put mesh on it for sure.
Killed the Wasps! Finally. Took a couple of goes.
Last few weeks I have organized a bottle of Argon/Co2 Lite as this Gasless Welding is rubbish! Got it going but really junky welds.
Priced Buy versus Rent! Rent wins hands down.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/04/15.jpg
The buy price was expensive and the Refill price was Rude!!!
I ended up with a Rental E size bottle at $19 a month and $73 per change over. No contract, month to month. I can drop it back any time. If I not going to use it for 3 months it's cheap to give back a half full bottle.
Bargain I reckon!!
Well dragged out the mesh today past the wasp nest. Cleaned up the Gasless welds and cut and welded the mesh.

Took ya long enough ya big woosy..
This rack is gunna be wicked..
Not as good as we had last night though.....
You having flip up lights on the roof or enclosed in that awesome rack onsom LOL
Like your thinking
Bloody Hell!! Big day! Knackered. Most of the day with a 5" grinder in my hand. Many years ago I had my own business as a Cabinet Maker and had a Sander or Grinder in my hand all day, between that and riding a Sports Bike my forearms and wrists are rooted. Today was a hard slog!!
Tried a few different options to strip the paint (all expensive) the Wire wheel worked a treat. Lethal but effective!
PPE was ear plugs, safety Glasses, full face shield over glasses and hat. Nasty bit of kit is the wire wheel! Spits all day.

Lookin good Daz, will be worth the hard slog
Yeah I tried a Flap disk, an abrasive disk like a hard sponge thing, the wire wheel was by far the most economical and least aggressive on the tube. I used a flap to clean things up after grinding.
With all the internal angles and mesh the other options wore down pretty quick and really did take steel off too. The wire wheel just stripped the paint. Was a slog though!
Very nice work Darren as I have come to expect from you. This is going to be awesome when it's done!
Do you own a mower :p
Leonardo 67 can't touch you Darren!
Top work mate :-) !!
I set up the roof rack in the car port a few weeks ago and gave it a paint with a long nap roller as the spray wasted so much paint!!!
I gave it 3 good coats.

So after it dried for a week I was not happy with the finish. The long nap roller left a stipple finish that was going to sh1t me forever so last weekend I rubbed it back with 1000grit wet n dry, then rolled it with 2 coats using a foam roller. So soo much better. Pain in the area but much happier with it and it's ready to mount.

OK, might of missed it but how are you mounting this. Does this bolt up to other bar work?
Now to the rear bar...........
I have decided I don't want to risk making a centre recovery point again so I have fitted the H&R tow at off the GUIV to the GQ.
THIS IS NOT A DIRECT BOLT UP!
The GQ tow bar bolts to the side of the chassis rail with 2 bolts. The GU tow bar bolts up under the chassis with 3 bolts..... I can make that work!!
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/20.jpg
I used so angle I had to weld nuts to to use inside the chassis rails.
First I drilled the holes in the angle and bolted it to the tow bar then welded the nuts in place.
