It is very odd Phil. It's a fine hairline crack that bleeds acid when I press it in. No bulging.
The battery was definitely not loose or overtight. It had a rubber mat/padding under it and under the top clamp, and wasn't overtight or anything. It's got me stumped.
Under good light, the corner sides nearest to turbo/exhaust are more discolored than the rest of the battery. I will only speculate, heat may have had something to do with this. Who knows. Regardless, battery is stuffed.
Check the Part # with Full River site.
They make a LOT of different batteries, vehicle, standby, UPS etc and many are not rated for high temps or high charging rates.
If it is suitable for "vehicle under bonnet" use then I have found Full River very good to deal with in the past albeit that was with UPS batteries
This is the one I had ET.

Max temp range is-40°C to 71°C.
I dare imagine that near the turbo/exhaust the temps would be well in excess of that.
However the battery has been there for more than 2 years and it never suffered any performance loss, until last week or so when I noticed the Varying volts.
AGM under bonnet, not recommended I believe./ Max temp on battery 71 degC - bet it gets hotter than that. I thi9nk you need a multi layer heat shield and a wet cell if you are going to persist with that location, plus keep a close eye on the liquid level.
Yes most companies won’t warrant an AGM under the bonnet, especially in a Patrol. Don’t get me wrong because there are some AGM designed that can go under bonnet but as we all know the Patrol is one of the hotter engine bays which is why we read so many threads on people trying to find ways to remove the heat such as extra bonnet scoops etc.
But I too are guilty of having an AGM under the bonnet http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...018/06/164.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...018/06/165.jpg

Guilty as AGM charged also, pardon the pun! Have got another overpriced, yet happy we are, Optima Yellow Top, turbo side on Mrs MB’s TD42T. Have witnessed its top slightly pressurised from the stock turbo shielding over the summer years so should also no doubt consider aftermarket protection layers between the two required parts :-)

I’m also guilty of having a battery (spiral cell) like the Optima as my starting battery

Me too for two under the utes 6.5L non turbo hot as hell bonnet and still trucking on against all apparently unsuitable advice. I do believe though that massive radiant heat does come off the family truckster stock turbo and auxiliary battery placement there we/and or aftermarket battery trays should allow for those inevitable experiences :-)

I bought 2 Optima Yellow top D31 battries for the GU and ran that pair gor 7 years under the bonnet. During that time my bad tune saw my TD run 500+ egts constantly and 500+ for 12 hour stints towing and touring. Those Optimas where awesome!! They died 2 months apart!!
I went to Battery World and bought a pair of AGM Extreme battires because i liked the 135AH rating for each and they where specifically rated for under bonnet.
After 3 months under the bonnet i went to use my compressor one day with the engine off and the second battery was flat as a tack!! Popped the bonnet and it was swallen badly. Checked the drivers and it had also swallen.
Took them both back and they swapped them again. The next one lasted 3 weeks before the psssenger side was a writeoff.
They swapped them out for a pair of D31 Optimas for no charge.
Why did our Yanky ‘Odyssey’ friends move out? Plate vertical batteries with sealed epoxy say tops and bottoms for vibrations, too expensive?

They were renowned in circles as the best of the best in their day, what’s your thoughts YB mate, I’ve never owned/used one?

Great cranking but for a short period. Generally last a long time but no good for deep cycle work. Great in race cars

I'm more cheesed off at my self, as I HAD the aux battery setup in the rear, and then once I got some draws due to space limitations and no feasable battery spot, I slotted it back in the front.
Either way, heat or not, the battery is rooted now. Even though it was a fairly expensive one for a 85AH. Live and learn. Just spent some time at the rear of the patrol, conjuring up ideas and pretty sure the aux setup is going to the rear again. Most of my wiring is there already so, not a huge job.
Ive got 2 odyssey's under the bonnet in my patrol, cant fault them at all. And the best bit...they were free!!http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...018/06/172.jpg

It was suggested to me Eric from someone that if I wanted to have the battery in the rear with draws there also, that I should look at shortening one of the drawers enough so that the battery can sit behind the draws. I was also thinking of some how tucking it in the side above the wheel arch where that pocket is. I let would be half hanging out of course so some fabrication work would have to be done to secure and hide the battery.

Markie. You're a mind reader !!!!!
I spent a bit of time this arvo looking at just that and measuring up and getting come bracketry ideas. And I think I've come up with something.
Will lose around 18cm of the draw, which is bugger all. The end of the draw is easy to grind the welds , cut the to size and weld or rivet the end back on. Drill some new holes for the rubber stops and voila!!! Battery hidden away and still easily accesible when you slide the draw slide open.
I got the idea of someone else who has done it on the other patrol forum. Also , there are a few people with shorty GQ's who have shortened them draws to suit the back of the shorty!
Watch this space!

@Hodge mate, @jaysee mate did a great mod like that and kindly posted on here a while ago. Squeezed a whopping 140AH behind his shortened drawers he modified himself too. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...018/06/185.jpg http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...018/06/186.jpg

numpties asking stupid questions, not doing what they were meant to, and in general being a waste of O2.

Morons entering a two lane carriageway from the left who... after you see them waiting on the side road and you be a nice dude and change from the LH lane to the RH lane so they have a gap to enter... pull the F#$@ out and cross the LH into the RH lane straight in front of you at, like 20 KPH, instead of crossing behind you.
Makes me sooooo want to round them up & cut in front of them and jam on the picks to give them an ABS check as well.
Only hassle is they prob have a Dash Cam so they can show the world what a great driver they are and what a discourteous SOB you are.
Happened to me twice this morning in the rain... effing dickheads
Ooooooo... me likee velly much
I swear I've kicked a hundred cats in a past life!
Haven't been camping or out of this house properly for months, packing the GQ and caravan up to head up the Murray tomorrow and we have severe wind warnings and currently experiencing some nasty gusts damn it!

Yeah little bit worried about towing this van in high winds.
I'll assess in morning and maybe even just stay the night at Yea or Molesworth caravan park because after that it's all open paddock highways.

Keep packing, change directions if required bro! NW (Mildura) has your best chance of less winter windy bliss, becoming calm Sunday morning stay longer for sure mate!

Yeah it's s bit wild took the old Jayco up to Dayslford "glamping" last weekend with Nicole's mates. Crazy head wind heading north up to Whittlesea way.
She'll be right i reckon give it a crack got a nice cosy roof over your head at least. . .
Considering a heater of sorts probably diesel after camping in last weekend's heavy frost, was actually nice plugging in a fan heater until the dog knocked a jumper over it in the night and tried to kill us all. . .
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
You will chew some diesel (factor in) heading straight into it ‘partner’ but better than getting side swiped wobbles for sure!
Why do my bosses nag’s always choose spooky nights alike to injure themselves, bloody idiots :-( http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2018/07/28.jpg

Does bring us all back to Freezing Mexican camping heater safety gents! @AB we never finalised diesel heaters exhaust safety and @Rossco pretty sure all electrics should by law purchase now have topple over ‘off’ switches for home use at least? Deliberately lived in a 70’s Lino clad caravan in my youth and nearly died from an elecy heater without failsafe’s built in then :-(
