i ll probably end up using the pliers more often but its good to have on my belt at work and in the glovebox of my car
[QUOTE=93patrol;493320]I picked up on these little Ball Tearers
Straight into the centre console, nice pick up
Research if interested Harrison bros and howson Special steel.
I have two from my great grand Ma, one Ive dated to early 1800's
wooden handle not sure of other,
FYI "special steel" was made before stainless and from memory that's late 1700S
but would need to check again,
Warranted steel is different kettle of fish it just means its been poured [forged]
These guys were Cutlurers to the Royals, I think they made a heap of the faux bone butter knives
Loving that stone, did all my Mundial butchers knives, very sharp indeed.
I'll put a pic up tomorrow
Think I got the date of special steel wrong from memory I think it was invented around 1730 -1735
It was on another thread with all the old stuff on it, I'll have a look
Slowly getting my survival stuff together, picked up a large gold blanket, and a couple of flints and strikers
Doubled up on my first aid stuff to fit Molle pouch, also have a compass and a proper mirror with a hole in the centre for signalling.
I think some water purifying tablets cant hurt , basic stuff as Im only planning on Cape York and the simpson in the next few years.
spare batteries and led torches, plus some high wind matches. and of course there is a knife of some description in there, the Leatherman Kick stays in the car, I'll lay it all out soon and take a picture. Mirror and other stuff was all part of a Boeing survival pack, everything had a use by date even bolts and mirrors go figure.
the pack contained a small led torch and spare batteries ,smelling salts and sachets of burn and antiseptic cream, lint to stop heavy bleeding and a few bandaids
Here are my Columbia Cutlery knives, I'll put them on consignment at a 4x4 shop and see how I go
Also the pig trotter gun rack, Its never been used
forgot about this one its taken all arvo but think Cleaver and razor sharp
I love the look of these cast iron knives, needs heaps more sharpening,
but getting there
That's a bloody big knife 3dogs
@ 93P more cleaver than knife I like these cast iron knives as they taper from the spine about 5mm to the cutting edge no shoulders.
Its very sharp now and ideal for getting the skin off a pumpkin, and chopping off fish heads yeah more suited to the heavier jobs around camp or the kitchen.
Working on another walking stick, its the ball root from an Acaccia tree [wattle]
need to sand it and use some walnut coloured varnish to finish and put a rubber foot on it
Just checked my emails and it's official, just received my certificate of business registration from ASIC, Southern Leather Solutions is up and running.
Just need to make up the website and find a decent platform for it.
Just received lastest 4x4 aust Mag and a great article on what makes a great "survival" knife.
None of these tanto blade tacticals got a look in as the knife hade to do more than cut, eg,,, dig ,paddle
150mm was at the smaller end and 300 was at the larger end. shape wise they have a 300mm full tang
no point more a large Paint scraper shape with a home made saw back, I'm going to get some 75mm wide leaf
spring and have a go at making one. It wont be pretty but it will work as a survival "TOOL"
Quote from mag " A good survival knife will potentially have hundreds of survival related functions,
cutting,slicing,digging,splitting,self-defence,food prep,fire making, hunting,prying tool, signalling,hammering
make shift screwdriver and so much more," interesting read
If I made this survival knife it should be all I need around camp,
I'll see if I can find a picture of the shape
9That's what I have doing for awhile now, going through tons of different knives etc that would make a good general purpose "tool".
I got the twin bowie set hoping that it would do the job but kept coming back to my Gerber LMF II, can cut, chop, hammer, break glass etc has belt cutter, molle sheath and shapener, used as a spear, trap etc but can't paddle but it can make 1.
That and my backup X Tactical sheath knife is more than enough for my survival pack but have a pocket knife in there as well as a GP knife for skinning etc if needed.
Need to track down that article as it would be a good read
I'm thinking of more like a small machete with a lower sharpened edge as well as on the shovel end.
para cord handle it would pout last cockies egg. wouldn't win any beauty awards but I know it would work.
You hit the nail on the head when you said "Tool" and it needs to be tuff,

This is close but a long way off as well, other pic is what they think is perfect shape
Gecki has 1 of those, not a bad set up but still find it a bit big
Might get Gecko to make me 1 once he is geared up, MC is still playing up but I think I posted a drawing I did awhile back of 2 different types I wouldn't mind having made up
Latest additions, celtic stamp set, screw post kits and a big ar$ed piece of croc print hide.
TD, regarding your ?? on the different textures like croc, the hide is put through a massive press roller.

thats looks like an awesome skin mate
Wasn't cheap to get either, will be using it special pieces i make up
awesome finish, so it goes through a set of rollers similar to a clothes mangle ?
Pretty much, same applies with stamping of the belts. About $500 for the roller plus $X each for the dies.
That leather is about 1-2mm thick, not sure how it would go for a sheath unless it was applied on top of another piece but may be able to use it as the front piece of a sheath
you could make a nice little vest out of that haha
would you make the sheath out of cow hide and then cover that or is roo hide cheaper??
as a sheath I think that would be a excellent selling point with roo backing layer.
And yes would make an great vest
Wifey wants me to make her a bag out of it lol
In a sense Roo leather is a lot more expensive but a lot stronger than cow hide.
To get a sheet of roo leather around 3-4mm thick would be several $100's which in turn would make say a bowie knife sheath around $80-90 per basic sheath once completed.
The croc print bowie sheath depending on how I use a backing on it would probably be similar in price where as a straight cow hide sheath would be around $35-50 depending on what was included on it.
Pocket knife sheath would be around $20-35 depending on style as I have 2 different cross draw styles and a pancake style with adjustable press studs in case you chose to use the same sheath with different sized knives up to 3 1/2 possibly 4 inches in size closed.

My knife finally arrived! As is typical, the afternoon before I fly out so haven't got a photo but, by thunder, it's a beauty! I see what you mean 3D. The blade is a nice weight and feel. The scales need a little bit of a touch up as they sit proud of the handle and catch on the fingers so will fix that in due course.
Speaking about survival knives, even though the tantos never made the list, I still reckon you could make a tanto blade survival knife. Just a wider, heavier blade with serrated back edge and hollow handle....
Which brings me to my next suggestion.... how about a wee competition to see who can come up with the best design, judged by members or a select panel.
I think the guidelines 3D outlined are perfect place to start...
I will even put up a bottle of Bourbon as a prize (if I am allowed to do that AB)
What say you?
thinking some "Croc" skin undies for camp oooohh yeeeaaaahhhhh
@OD, have you tried tanning your own roo hides? Cheaper or not?
# GKO you can see how well it would look as a bumble bee ah,
I have sharpened the tanto edge and left the rear blade area for chopping applications.
also those twin stones I've put in the pouch, not sure if it'll stay there
as a small leatherman style tool might be better
I gotta say that I am impressed with it 3D. and a multi-tool would fit into that pouch too!
Fits a few profiles , like you could cut, chop, saw sort of and dig not sure how good a spear it would make.
But ticks a few boxes not all but a few
Did you see my earlier post about a comp? What do you reckon?
I already have an design in mind that should cover most of the specs...
I too have been drawing a few ideas but not happy with what I have atm.
I'll whip down a shop tomorrow and grab some old leaf springs.
Its the digging/spear bit I struggle with, I can see it in my head but not
on paper GGGGRRRrrrrrrrrrrr
EDIT:: think I have a good design just needed to look at all the tools in a pile lol
I'll start on it tomorrow if feeling ok
I was struggling with the spear idea as well... up until a few moments ago. A simple solution came to me! :D
Can always utilise a similar set up to the LMF with 3 x holes for roping to a pole
