Could it be coz the steel tray is thicker and heavier than the back end of a wagon ??

Thanks again for everyone's input and i hope i get more replies so i can get a more accurate average of fuel consumption of these motors not only for myself but to others thinking of converting to a TD42
Hi Alitis007,
I am a new member. I have a 1993 Patrol GQ II ST TB42E
I have been told as you increase the diameter of your tires your fuel economy gets worse.
What size tires do you think I should get.
What is the difference between a td42t's and a TB42E, is the td42t's a turbo diesel. Mine is a 4.2 injected petrol.
Increasing your tyre size only increases fuel consumption if you try to accelerate at a faster rate than normal, if your using your trip meter / odometer to calculate fuel consumption larger tyres will show a lower distance travelled because a 33"(285/75) tyre has a larger rolling distance than a 30.5" (265/70), so one revolution of the 33 will take you further than the 30 thus making it calculate to a higher fuel consumption coz of the lover odometer reading. Tyre size is totally up to you coz you need to work out what terrain you drive on and what you use your car for. The main difference between the tb42 and the td42 is like you said, one is petrol and the other is diesel.
The td42's are much much better than the tb42's too. Thats the biggest difference :p
Just did the Simpson crossing east to west my td42 got 19.5 lt per 100. The tb42 got 26 lt per 100 on petrol, for the rest of the trip I got between 16 and 17 lt per 100, dirt and bitumen, these cars both were fully loaded and roof racks. Unloaded city/ hwy I'm in the 13/14 lt range
Around town and short trips <3 hours from Jervis Bay to Canberra 13.2 on 265 TOYO HT's ..
Heading north in two days towing a small CSU (Camping Support Unit) will post as I'll fill up at Costco in Casula, NSWand then again in Brisbane.
I have just fitted 35's to mine once I have used the tanks I will report back
The 4 cyl diesels economy is on par with the 6 when heavily loaded, on the recent trip we did the hilux's best economy used 10 lt less fuel than my 4.2 , sometimes less than that, seen similar with the GU 3 lt and prados.
Only measured fuel consumption once on my 2005 4.2 TDi ex Telstra ute with the pod on the back and got 16lt/100km. I'm still running cheesecutters. haha.
99.99% of my driving is on country roads and is mostly driven in a head/cross wind. It doesn't help that the pod protrudes externally of the cab, as it basically acts like a wind anchor.
That's probably why I sit on about 90k's everywhere I go. lol.
Rossco.
Just did a economy check from Casula to North Lakes with a 2 hour stop and go stint in Sydney. I usually drive at or above the posted speed pulling a camper trailer and one box on the roof.
16.2L/100
Okay update now that I have some reliable internet.
$145.99/L at Casula
$147.99/L Brisbane
Casula to Brisbane, 16.2 L/100 with the speedo at 110+ most of the time, only one small box on the roof rack.
North Lakes to Gympie (going up and down the hills in Mapleton multiple times) 15.9 L/100
$145.99 /L Gympie off to Emerald 100k/hr
Emerald (biggest fill up) $146.99 /L (Navigator got some cold coffee drinks for another $0.04 off per liter) 16.02 @ 100 km/hr (as close as I could keep it)
Emerald to Charters Tower with a side trip to Townsville, 16.03 (yup the same)
Charters Tower to Atherton, 16.3 (I put two storage containers on roof rack in CT) $165.99/L
Hi Sonof
How are those 285/75's going.
Notice any difference to fuel economy.
Thanks,
Neil.
2000 GU coil cab
Aftermarket turbo/intercooler, 12mm pump, 4/6" lift, 4.3 diffs, 305 mud terrain's @ 40psi, 400k
14L/100klm.
Without trying! Mixed driving from freeway to bush.To think I would be in the 13's if I did an economy run!
Just to add something a little different,
Fully loaded, 33 muddies, all factory under the bonnet, in sand 14L/100. Straight diesel
Running around town, I get about 11L, turn on the gas, it drops to about 9L, and I dont drive like a nana....
Well, I have a TB42 carbied GQ with a 350 Holley on it (don't ask)
Running 32's, 2" lift, roof racks and drawers, pulling about 2.7t;
on road (85-95kmh) I get about 19.6L/100km on ULP and 20.5 on LPG.
Fully loaded towing a 17.5 ft caravan (75-95) I get about 24 on ULP and 28 on LPG.
Just acquired a TD42T GU wagon, stealing the donk.
Will post figures when she's in!
Wonder if I can bolt the TB42 into the GU and sell it on. hmmmmmm. :-)
TD42Ti, standard intercooler, modified airbox lid, 3" ss exhaust, egr deleted, adrad radiator, original injectors, original injector pump (tuned by myself), UFI 18g @ 25psi.
The old girl has just knocked over 330k she is getting tired in the fuel side of things and the above is certainly at the better end of the figures for me. It has been serviced in the last week so I think that helped.
GQ TD42T (GU Factory turbo), disconnected wastegate and had pump compensator modified to suit.
33's, 3" lift, roof racks, bullbar with light bar on top. All the nasty wind catchers.
Average 11.5 - 11.9 L/100km on longer trips. 12.5 around the Snowy Mtns.
17.5 towing a 17ft full height caravan.
Soooo stoked.
I don't like reading this thread, cause either you guys are all full of shit or my economy is :(
