All I can recommend is using another computer to do a backup then running a full checkdisk and this should tell you if the drive is repairable or not.
Cheers mudski. I have the Windows 7 install disk on its way.
Rusty_nail has been helping me so far and it sounds like he's taking me down the same path you have mentioned apart from downloading the drivers. Grab a USB and get the drivers tomorrow. How big are they? Should they all fit onto a 2gb stick?
Andy if you need an XP disc, W7 Ultimate disc, Win8 disc, Office 2007 or 2010 let me know. I got'em all. Plus others. Lol.
Thanks for that mate!
I can't check disk in either option as it fails on boot to check and in cmd it says the volume is in use.
Attachment 36040
Without a disk there is not much you can do
No only vista lappy. I do have an old clunker xp clevo laptop from the 90's somewhere here but I would be amazed if that dinosaur fired up...lol
What version on XP is it. Home, Pro?
Hmm. I'd have to look, but I might have a Pro version here if you need. Def got home though.
Not that I have tried this and mudski would probable be able to tell you if it will work or not
Can you link your lappy up to the pc and map the the pc drive and check for errors
Just a carlton dry thought for the night :)
grab a copy of Hiren's BootCd from here http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/ , extract it , burn to a CD and boot off that disk. it has dozens of tools to diagnose/fix computer issues. Full list here http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd . And its free and legit.
TBH I have never tried when the lappy is only in safe mode. I would remove the lappy hard drive and connect it direct to a desk top and repair it that way.
Ronin's way would work too. Can use Ultimate Boot CD too. Geez its been a while since I've used those...But since Andy more than likely won't have either, getting hold of an XP cd would be just as easy I reckon. Two more sleeps until BF4 is released..wOOt!
That's 1 hell of a loaded disk, will getting a copy of that for sure
Are there any excel nerds on here who know how to crack into a password protected file?
This is a legit operation, nothing dodgy I promise...lol
Hey AB got a Google account ? Try uploading it to googe docs or Google drive as its now called I think and it'll convert a excel file into the google docs spreadsheet type. It just may by pass password that way.
reckon you can follow this?

this guide is probably easier to follow
Thanks guys only just got home now so will check back here tomoz and see if I can follow those links...lol
Brain tired, no more thinking today!!!
Email me the file if you get stuck and is not sensitive info, I've done it before and probable still have the program on the other PC.
Use nissangq42@tpg.com.au not my google email as I never check it
Well i think i have successfully reinstalled windows on my lappy. A big thanks to you Nic, your help was appreciated greatly.
All seems good and its running lightning fast again but no doubt ill have a few more questions along the way.
First question: Windows Action Centre is prompting me to go online and get an antivirus program. I was running Microsoft Security essentials and i think that was going ok for me? Should i go for that again?
I dont want one of those crappy AV programs that slow down my computer.
Go for the Microsoft one Lucas. One of the best going around, and its free !!
Just use a match
Ok so my lappy is running beautiful BUT every time I shut down it installs updates and ofcourse every time I boot up it has to configure those updates. It can't take anywhere from 1 minute to 10 minutes installing before it shuts down depending on the amount of updates. On second shut down after the fresh Windows install it had 88 updates! It's down to 1 or 2 now. I don't mind it once in a while but every time is a bit annoying. Is it normal? Can I turn it off or down?
Just turn automatic updates off. Google how to do it =]
If you only have 1 or 2 left spend the time to get them done. Just sit down let it download do the restart and hopefully that's it.
lucas dont run anymore updates, they arent nessescary and they will stuff up the crack for your non-genuine version of windows.
Cool so I should just google how to turn them off? (as Winnie the wise suggested)
You're an absolute legend nic:-)
