View Full Version : Toughest Patrol??? GQ or GU

This one is going to Stir the pot!!!!!!!
So guys what is tougher, a GQ or GU?
Ever time I'm with my mates and we have a few frothies this old debate always comes out!!! I need some new facts to take to the party.
Ok we all know the 4.2L D or TD is legendary, and we all know the 2.8L TD and 3.0L TD are not!!!
So I'm talking about the other stuff other then engine!!! I read on Wikipedia that the GU was quote
"The underbody hardware (differential, CVs etc.) were significantly strengthened. Comfort levels were also increased over GQ, especially in the seating and NVH areas."
Ok boys and girls lets start the ball rolling......

.
Firstly WTF!. We all know the 3.0l is legendary...LOLOLOL what's wrong with the 3.0L? better output figures then the 4.2 then you have fraction of the fuel usage compared to the 4.2. Better/Zippier driving then the slug.
Secondly, there is only one tough truck and that is the GU.
Hahaha, you started it...lolol
joey_081
26th March 2012, 11:41 AM
I like the 3.0L, I think its great, but some do beg to differ. I have a 2.8 TD and I'm the first to say its not great, but its the best I could afford in a diesel GU. I agree I'm thinking GU and they look better too! But I won't cast my vote until all the facts are gathered.
So far
GU 1 - GQ 0

brother inlaw has a 4.2 GQ and i have a 2.8 GU, we both agree there isnt much his 4.2 can do that my 2.8 cant, just have to realise they work differently but at the end of day are both very capable motors, as for the car itself, we both agree mine is more comfy
joey_081
26th March 2012, 12:48 PM
I Agree with the cumfort factor Lufkin!!!! My mate with his 4.2D GQ reckon his diffs, gearbox and cv's are all way stronger then my GU 2.8. I'm sure he's not right, either they are the same or the GU would be stronger, otherwise why would nissan go backwards with the GU?
AB
26th March 2012, 12:50 PM
GQ's have stronger gearboxes then the GU's but the GU's have stronger CV's.
There are a heaps of other differences that I'm sure will follow...
The GQ's look strong and robust and are more suited for manly men whereas the GU's have been known for their feminine appeal and grocery shopping attributes....lol
Yep, here it comes!!!
AB
26th March 2012, 12:54 PM
In terms of the TD42, the earlier TD42 (silver top) in the GQ is more robust as well. Check this link out...
Although all TD42's are mint of course.

GU have larger front diff physically no GQ had the bigger front i have a 99 GQ and its still got a GQ diff. As stated the gearboxes are slightly different GQ seems to be the tougher one there but the gu post 04 seem to have fixed this problem. The steering box is stronger in the GU although the later model GQ's have the same box fitted. In my oppinion i think it comes down to the time The GQ served its purpose for 11 yrs relatively unchanged. Where as the GU with the legendary motor combo only went for 9 yrs.

early GQ leaf ute! as they generally have TD42, H260 rear diff and some even had drive flanges on the front diff instead of locking hubs.
The leaf rear also can carry more weight without the chassis failing. The OP asked for 'toughest' not most capable or comfy...

The 3l goes harder, and uses less fuel, but hook 2500 kg on the back the Gq feels much better and the TD42 is much slower but uses less fuel and is still going 500000kms later with one clutch not 15 like the GU will have.
Did the snail win the race.

The 'drive flanges' are the similar to the ones on the front of a full-time 80series, They are a fixed drive flange rather than a free wheel / locking hub. A standard nissan locking hub can only transmit ~4500 ft/lb, an auto lock ~3500-4500 depending on condition, an Aisin hub (toyota/mitsu/suzuki....) ~7500-8000ft/lb, nissan/toyota drive flanges ~7500+.

This is a no brainer, to build the toughest patrol you need an early silver top GQ, add a GU power steer box, GU front diff and then you have created the ultimate patrol. Plus a GQ just looks tougher.

All I can say is my Patrol project, the mighty MQ/MK is the beast to own, friggen thing loves taking my skin, eating up and spitting out grinders (up to my 3rd so far), has tractor and truck parts, is made of STEEL, drive it over a landmine and someone in china would feel the shock wave and before i took it off the road, EVERYONE gave way even if they had the right of way

To bring up an old battle...
How small is the cargo area behind middle seats in the gu, compared to the gq.
Do middle seat passengers get more leg space in the gu?

Can't tell you exact size but GQ boot is larger, especially if you remove the dickey seat.
Do middle seat passengers get more leg space in the gu? Yes you do, hence the smaller boot space

My 2cw is anything that came out STD with steel bumpers is by far tougher

@ Winnie If someone throws some money into a GU I'm sure it would match your ride but its the toughest
not most photographed but GQ by far tougher wide wheelbase smaller cabin area compared to GU, better approach and departure

I drive my Q in mud and on gravel like you drive your ricer on bitumen
If by saying ricer you mean the EXA i had i doubt it, i tried my best to break it. I could only break gear boxes, drive shafts, turbos and had to adjust the tappets every 2 weeks lol. If your talking about my Rx7, you definitely wouldn't or you'd end up in some trees lol.
2 things i noticed in your video, 1 you know that track pretty well, i could tell by the way you kicked it out at the start. 2 you know your car and its obvious by your throttle control. You can drive without a doubt mate but get into a car your not familiar with and you might find its a bit more challenging, doesn't matter weather or not it a GQ or GU.

1) crabbing is the most fun way of driving ruts:). Patrols love to sit sideways in ruts and just keep plugging away. If a rut is deep enough to grab my diff then ill try crab up it. (EDIT: also, its near impossible to keep a rig straight around that corner)
2) Challenge No. 2 accepted: Give me a car i've never been in:). I can get my brothers toyo poop carrier further than he can lol and id never driven it before that day. Gotta always be thinking thinking thinking and it helps to know the 56 types of mud we get here lol

Well put Matt,

I took my GU out to glasshouse today. Apart from being more comfortable the GQ is far more at home in the rough stuff and just eats it up. I love both my patrols the gu is comfy while the gq is the tougher rig.

Isnt the stock stadard GU just a beefed up stock stadard gq with a more fancy body on top? Surely its the value of the vehicles that prevents most GUs following the gqs through the more damaging trails:)

You are all wrong - the MQ Datsun Safari is in my mind the toughest. I have pulled many a Toyota Land Cruiser out of mud pits, etc. and some times did not even use the low range gears for that. Secondry to the MQ I will stand next to the GU first time, why? Because it is the next up from the MQ. Besides every Nissan patrol that has come out of history, has the DNA of the MQ ...

The looked after GQs are still dragging in the cash. As for replacing Q parts with U parts, it is simple: there are only GU parts available at the wreckers. With so many Qs around, the only conclusion anyone can reach is that GUs owners get rid of their machines a lot earlier, because the plastic don't last.
