Hi,

Please forgive my lack of knowledge and indecisiveness :)

And thanks in advance for you help. Much appreciated!

I did ask a question on here the other day about the newer 2007 - 2010 Ti TD 3.0 Automatic consumption BUT I have decided with a lot of thought that I think for the price difference & depreciation I will go with an older GU Ti with the 4.5 litre petrol like 1998/1999. (I want automatic tranny and Ti model so in those years, I have to go with petrol)

Another reason for the change is I have a 100 Series right now and I would like something not so exxy as the 2010 type patrol that I can take offroad sometimes and not care so much about panels etc etc...

I still think they look comfortable enough to go on long drives in?? Maybe not quite as comfy as a 2010 but hey.... Big price diffference.. And I would always be scared to damage her offroad.

Now, I have the same question but with the different engine..
I have searched the net and found many many different fuel consumtion rates - big differences so I am unsure what to believe.

As I drive a lot of kms (but need a 4x4) this is one thing I need to know.

The following is RE: 98/99 etc GU 4.5 Petrol

Firstly they are mostly manual transmission figures and maybe they vary so wildly due to maintenance and thing like faulty air flow sensor/meter and old air filter etc.

But I was wondering what fuel consumtion people get with automatic (or even manual I guess) around town and on highway (100-110kmh).

If you reply, could you please specify manual or auto transmission, year and driving style (hammer it off the lights or take it easy) etc.

Dont care about offroad and towing costs as I realise they will be more and I dont care about that cost

Also, I have been looking at some for sale that already have the old style LPG systems on them. Anyone know how much extra you use of LPG?

But mainly, I was told by a mechanic that the 4.8 litre newer petrol engine burn valves out with LPG.

I dont know if its true but he is a well known 4x4 mechanic and has a good name. Is LPG reliable on the 4.5 Litre versions?

Oh and I should say I have had a GOOD run with reliabilty with the landcruisers doing over 400,000kms sometimes (petrol) with right maintenance.

I know patrols have a good rating for reliability but are they on par with landcruiser with high Kms? (as I dont want to buy a money pit as the ones I am looking at mostly have 190,000 - 260,000kms (petrol 4.5)) - Obviously I mean a maintained and checked one - not a heap of abused Cr*p.

Thank You
CR

I have a 1998 GU 4.5L Dual Fuel Manual Transmission

Fuel Consumption on Gas Cruising 18/19 Litres per 100 K's Around Town 22 Litres per 100 K's

Petrol 16 Litres per 100 K's Cruising So not much difference between Petrol & Gas

Not a Lead Foot Cruise 100/105 K

Thanks a lot

No reliabilty issues on gas? How many kms have you done now total? Thanks again

BTW I have just replaced the Head on Mine as the old Head had burnt out Valves (295,000 K's)
New head Serdi Cut valves with enlarged Ports. Hell of a Difference in Power as Motor breathes a lot better.
Due to my Health I am getting rid of the Patrol but is not what you are looking for as it is a Manual and has done 297,000 K's and is a ST

ok thanks again

Sorry to hear about your health mate

Last questions for you :)

How many kms did it do with the lpg on it before valve burnt out?

And, How much was the head and valves installed? (Is the fuel consumptionm you mentioned based on the old head or new?

Sorry for the questions :)

Head replaced at 295,000 K's
Head and installation cost $4,500. It was a Reconditioned Head with Valves installed (Obtained from Cave Engineering Services in Melb)
Surprisingly the Fuel Consumption figures were before and also after the new Head.
Glad to be of some help.

Best of Luck in your search.
Bob

Thanks again mate

You have indeed been a big help :)

Ah I have always found that 4x4 and fishing people (and gardening people) are so helpful and genuine and down to earth whereas other areas of interest, people are mostly up themselvess :)

That's interesting Bob. I have a 99 4.5 dual fuel manual and am just about to replace the head at 285,000 kms. Ive just moved to the city, Adelaide, and am realising how thirsty my Nissan is with city driving....can't blame her though, Im not a fan of the city either!

Been quoted $3,500 for supply and fit of a reconditioned head :( I can't complain though. This is the first major expense Ive had to face with the Nissan and a small price to pay for taking us all over the country, getting us through rugged terrain, and has always got us home safe and sound.

The only fault with this vehicle is that it doesnt have a mirror on the drivers side visor so I can see when Im touching up my lippy! ;)

Hi All!

I have a 4.5 liter petrol GU. It's a thirsty bugger and having it converted to dual fuel LPG had crossed my mind. I just wanted to ask those who have had it done what their experience has been with LPG and possible drawbacks. I have read a lot on both sides regarding this matter that it's either a bad idea, vehicles were never meant to run on lpg, it bad for your lungs, but at the same time, given the popularity and of course the cost savings, it may not be such a bad idea. I thought of getting the info from those who have had it done instead of someone trying to sell me something or some other guy who keeps talking out of his arse but has never had it done.
