Hello Fellas, I have a 1991 GQ Shorty TD42 Diesel. What are the best brands for the:
(Please include part number if you know it)

Air Filter? (I personally have a K&N part#E9201)

Oil? (I have the Fram, I forget the part#)

Fuel? (I have not changed it, do not know anything about it yet)

Pre Filter? (I have not even opened the thing?)

Also, what is the best Oil and best Diff oil? (brand and weight please)

Your opinions a very appreciated, stay safe mates, no Drinking/Driving unless its pepsi

I use original Nissan filters. They are at the same price as OE filters in Latvia.

Always used Ryco as well. Unfortunately mine has one cheap and one expensive (non return valve) on it.
Cheers
Rick

I have thought about using k&n but i thought they would get dirty quick in all that dust and block up they might be ok if you had a paper pre filter.

I like to use original but have used ryco and have been happy with the brand. I will say that I never use ryco or any other brand air filters. Always original. I think the trick to a good life from and engine etc is to actually change filters and oils when its due. and actually do it! Ive always been a big believer in using the same oil all the time. For me having a 3 ltr diesel using the nissan oil is important. Its done over 250 000k now and not a worry. Its got a chip and bigger intercooler as well and seems to be holding out well.

Got a 4.2d as well. GQ Use Castrol RX in that as alot of my machines that ive got use it. Thats done over 450 000k and still going strong as well. As I said before always serviced on time!

I only use donaldson filters i can get them pretty cheap through work and figure if they use them on multi million dollar equipment then they should be right for the humble td42

Do you recommend using the same make fuel / oil /air filters or are there better brands for each area? Are there any products that can extend the service interval or that are able to be cleaned and re-used?

Hey pominozjohn
I use a K&N air filter as they are reusable(cleanable) but when I am going off road for few days I always put a finer filter sock over my snorkel n each arvo when finished driving I rip it of n wash it out, dry n ready next morning chuck it on n drive again. Keeps heaps out of K&N.
As for oil n Fuel yeah same as a few on here just Ryco they seem to work fine for me no hassels or blockages..

Mann&Hummel filters are excellent quality and very reasonable around $3 us each. Check out Rockauto.com in the USA. There shipping is reasonable as well maybe you guys can have a group buy..

Not to be controversial here - but just asking - does the brand of filter really matter? As long as it is a quality manufacturer and filters are changed regularly? Anyone have a link to any kind of independent testing on filters? That might be helpful.

I always make sure the micron rating of the filters is as good if not better than genuine before i go into buying filters its easy enough to find out from suppliers. Then its down to whoever will give you the best deal on filters.

Bought some genuine oil filters today, cost $18.28 each.

Have used genuine filters for many years, trust them to be the best for their engines.

Funny though, wont pay their price for oil. Use equivalent grades using the API codes etc.

Hope I'm not mis-guided

Check out "Bob The Oil guy" he has cut open numerous filters and posted his results. Apparently Fram is really bad.

I use Ryco oil and air filters.

FUel filter: I had a problem with an air leak , meaning the car wouldn't run if it was left for a while( fuel drained back into tank ). I took it to the mechanic and he fitted a Parker "Racor" R20S fuel filter assembly fitted with the brown 2 micron filter. It was pretty expensive, but has a glass bowl to view the fuel colour and quality. My mechanic told me that it even cuts out the fuel supply to the engine if too much water is present in the fuel bowl.

I use ryco air and oil filters only, do not use repco oil filters as they can leak. And for engine oil use pentrite 20-60. For diff oils a good LSD oil for both
