Ok guys to save confusion I’ve started another Simpson thread.
Meet at Coober Pedy july 5th 2024 at MB mate’s place leave on Sunday 7th for Oodnadatta and Dalhousie springs, 8th into Mt Dare to top up fuel, a beer and a photo then back to Dalhousie.
9th Darren to lead the convoy on the French line, this time we will do a steady crossing with 3 overnight stops due to partners and kids coming along to break it up a bit.
I suggest we each book the Birdsville caravan park as sites will be at a premium due to the brb around that time as we will or should arrive on the afternoon of the 12th, that gives us an overnight in Birdsville before heading to haddon corner and Cameron corner on the way home.
Please let me know if there are any other suggestions and if not we will lock it in, I assume Darren mudrunner will be ok leading again and Mb will let us know the details of the place in Coober Pedy.
Cheers Stropp

Ps don’t forget your desert parks pass

Apologies for the delay here Folks. I have been waiting for a reply from Michael in Coober Pedy to no avail.
It appears he may have sold his underground motel as it has been found online now under a different trading name.
Nevertheless AB, myself and our kids have just booked 2 x nights ( July 5th & 6th 2024 ) in a 3 bedroom underground apartment here at Michael’s old place:

https://desertview.com.au/

I can highly recommend this place as we spent a few weeks stuck there working in a Covid lockdown during 2021 and found it very secure with tools etc… Just a 10 minute walk into town, maybe 20 stumbling back :-)

AB has just made contact with the Birdsville Tourist Park too and was advised to call back in 4 weeks time for booking as it’s too early for July 12th 2024. (exactly 1 year away today).

Hi MB , I’ve emailed the desert view asking about group discount so will await their reply and if AB can ask Birdsville caravan park as well that would be great, no harm in asking even if they say no. Cheers Stropp

Yeah very good idea to book early, I just did a spreadsheet to plan it all out ,looks like will be about a three and a half week trip showing down the pace considerably and checking out some things that have been on the list for a while. . Think will head back down the Birdsville track as have never done that before and be good to cross off the list[emoji106][emoji106]

Jerry can/s a must too, even us old diesel highway 4.2L say 15.0L/100km hauling donks with hundreds of litres below deck still needed in case of emergencies/patchwork.
We’ll work out track conditions after the Big Red Bash degradation crossings closer to the date and your fuel consumption statistics and maybe we can share carrying loads for the Mogas Brothers like yourself & Dazman #The62 when his foots heavy & tired @30L/100km highway blasting [emoji123][emoji23]

Alright you sweet talkers, we are in! Got a bit of work to do to get the car ready but we will make it happen!I can't believe the kitchen nearly got precedence....
But glad justice prevailed and the right outcome was achieved..........

You have 12 months mate get cracking.
But I am in the same boat.
After doing a "lite" track Saturday kissing the bash plate more often than I like and nearly removing a side step I am leaning towards a lift kit.
Just more money lol.
Stropp trip sounds great. We will be keen to do the whole trip including Oodnadatta and Birdsville track back south.

If anyone is keen we will probably spend a couple of nights in the Flinders Ranges on the way home.
Maybe a couple of touring tracks and sight seeing.
Parachilna Gourge is amazing to camp in..

Keen as..

Something to keep in mind as it gets closer and only a suggestion. This works well on the week long vhc trips I do.

Generally each car provides for the group one lunch and one dinner, this can change to whatever works as it's a longer trip and depending on number of people and days away. That way everyone isn't carrying the same cookers and pots cooking the same things and you only need to carry enough food for your cook, not for the whole trip.

From what I've gathered there will be some nights where a pub meal is planned, but for the times when we are camping inbetween stops this could work.

Again just a thought. Don't wanna throw a spanner in the works..

That's the way we came back last time and it was a pretty cool part of the trip.
We are tossing up between going that way or the Birdsville track into the Flinders.

Just been looking through my logs from the last Simpson crossing and my GQ used 19.25L/100km during the crossing which was 720km from Mt Dare to Birdsville.
Has anybody got any fuel consumption figures for a crossing in a modern 4cyl turbo diesel car? The standard fuel tank in the MUX is 80L and I was hoping to carry 2x 20L jerry cans.

Do we have a rough plan for the crossing itself, ie French line the whole way? Etc.

It's no different to a Y62 or 200 series which I would bet there would be 20 of those vehicles crossing every day to 1 GQ.
The whole point of us buying this car was to get it set up for these kinds of trips, much more room inside and infinitely more comfortable. The GQ is for high country/boys/hunting trips now. The kids are getting bigger and I'm running out of space.
Times change.

Bit early but I had a look at Dalhausie campsite bookings, but if you have parks pass (as we will) it covers camping fees. . Not wanting to be too paranoid but want to be sure there'll be enough room for all of us if we just rock up??. . . Thanks mate, appreciate it. Just chasing the never ending death wobbles lately.

I personally think its wheel bearing tightness. I have not had the death wobbles for years, after having it and replacing everything. The last resort was put new stub axles in as I noticed a small step where the inner wheel bearing sat, right against where the hub seal ran. after I replaced the stub axles all was good. This was some 8 years ago I think. The wobbles were recently slowly coming back, I jacked up the front and both wheels felt good, I gave both wheel bearings an extra one only notch to tighten them up. All wobbles were gone.
So my theory is the wheel bearings need to be slightly tighter than you think, especially if your running larger tyres.

But. If you need help with anything. Shout out. If I'm able, I'll help.

Yeah I reckon check stub axles, I put some new ones on mine recently only so many years of use and more recently abuse (mud mud mud) they will take. Obvious but check drag link and tie rod ends, panhard bushes, someone also mentioned new rotors fixed it for them so that could be something to keep in mind if all else fails. .

Spare nuts and bolts corrugations rattle averything to buggery, zip ties & duct tape & metal putty a must lol. . Make sure tyres are good a plug kit & compressor (but will be a heap of those on the convoy.) Zip ties, metal putty, plug kit and compressor already live in the back of the patrol. I do need to change my exhaust system it's had a leak ever since I owned it. Good excuse for a full new system. While it's there I'll get them to do a tappets adjustment and give it a once over.

I bought the Hema map pack for memory maps a few years ago. It has the Simpson in great detail. I don't really want to run a seperate tablet with maps in this car but at the moment there is no way to get offroad maps through the screen in the car.
Newtracs have just released Apple carplay suitability for their app, we have Android phones though so hoping that comes out soon for Android Auto. I haven't tried their mapping app yet but I have heard it is good.
Worst case though I think we will run the tablet on the windscreen, really want to avoid that though.

I've not been around the forum for a while, but this sounds interesting, I need more time with other fellas as I'm pretty much a loner when it comes to mates.

We did Cape York solo last year (2023, after doing the Canning solo in 2022), did Old Coach Road solo as well (not going back there, don't know how we never rolled down hill end over end at one point) and a nice trip through the Simmo could be nice and relaxing.

I got nothing planned for 2024.

Where can I get more details???

Yes possibly two groups of 7 30 mins apart and swap groups each day , to be discussed at port Augusta [emoji1745]*[emoji3603]

More than happy to casually run tail-end charlie with our mountain hillbilly slower moving crew of 4 x older wagooons with say 1hr between 5 & 5 front runners each, a great idea Stroppstar [emoji736][emoji736][emoji106][emoji106]
Can front truck in convoy #1 ensure they have a Sat phone, [emoji3513] same same for convoy #2 and us bogans out back will carry da same convoy connectivity [emoji736][emoji736][emoji3590][emoji3590]

Will discuss in port Augusta or probably Coober Pedy as We have 2 nights there , I think 2 groups 30 mins apart as it’s not too far and maybe even in 2way reception of each other also we will possibly arrive at stops close enough that we may spend some time together at stops. All up for discussion

Please be subtly warned, I do drive as slow as all getup, getting old here, really hoping to soak up the country at grandpa spec pace on the tail end [emoji23] [emoji120][emoji120]

AB possibly 14 depending on if chock his dad and Kurt come in 3 cars

That's nearlly got to be called FULL. Beyond 10 can get messy and slow.

13 or 14 really is bursting gents. 10G needs to be the final inclusion bar something extraordinary.

Yeah, sorry guys, I can't make it. A family thing popped up that I had forgotten about.

I hope you all have a great time.

Bah! Humbug! [emoji23][emoji23]

Simples……come #1 ……come #All NP.com.au [emoji736][emoji736][emoji106][emoji106]

Simples #2 ………..Let’s just ingeniously create micro-convoys (5 x max) spread at say 1-2hrs apart? [emoji848]

Surely leading Y62’s up the front/pointy end will run out of Mogas juice 3/4 of the way thru and need to rebunch us inline all together for an impromptu ripper of a desert [emoji248] [emoji2519] party rave [emoji322][emoji322][emoji322][emoji23]

Uncle Daz & Poppy Stroppy will surely/safely lead da way whilst Uncle AB will be in the middle of the pack sharing valuable tips whilst the tail-end collects/prepares a nutritious dinner/soup [emoji265] [emoji266][emoji2957]

I think it would depend on the pace of the crossing as most people have already booked a couple nights accommodation in Birdsville.

Absolutely, I’d rather this time a little slower pace and earlier stops

Agreed 100% Stropp.

With kids this time it would be nice to set up at 2pm ish and drink beverages, sand fun, explore, stories and repeat.

On a serious note guys, we are heading into the harsh outback of Australia and we need to ensure everyone and I mean everyone has an adequate supply of water.

Here is a guide for how much each person needs to carry.

As a guide, we chewed thru 30L in two days at Dalhousie, temps 30 deg but in and out of the warm water smashed us.

Absolutely there is JC, I was just doing a funny Russell Coight thing. That is plenty of water mate and we have stops before and after.

I’ll have my 50 litre tank and maybe a couple of 10-20 litre cask waters and drinking bottles etc, all good bro.
