What is the difference between frozen and cryo'd food?It sucks all the air out and seals the bag shut.
With no air things stay fresher longer.
Also removes the chance of freezer burn.

Yeah but all the towns they went through to get there benefited from that. They would’ve travelled great distances.

Fuel, food, pubs, caravan parks, motels, repair shops, small shopping places in towns, camping places, $2 peep shows, dodgy massages, it all adds up.

Actually I believe their may be a difference between 'Vacuum Sealed' & 'Cryovac'd'.

Both use the same sort of process, one is done on a 'home' machine, the other on a more powerful professional machine, generally with stronger bags.

I'm probably splittng hairs, but I know that the 'reasonable quality' home machine we have does not do as good a job as one gets from most butchers shops for example.

For a short duration trip either will do if frozen too, for longer periods I'd go with the butcher's machine every time.

Our default meat storage is cryovac'd & frozen. In hot climates portable freezers rarely remain at the recommended minus 18 deg.C but with the contents cryovac'd we have never had any problems & some has been kept for many months in the tropics.

A snip I found...
Differences Between Cryovac And Vacuum Sealed Packaging
Manufacturing Process

Cryovac and vacuum-sealed packaging rely on similar principles, but their manufacturing process has some key differences. Cryovac, for example, is a brand of vacuum-sealed packaging that utilizes specialized materials and machinery in its production.

The method of Cryovac involves packing food products in a high-barrier, vacuum-sealed bag, which is then heat-sealed and cooled in a controlled environment. Vacuum-sealed packaging, on the other hand, is generally produced using simpler machinery and materials.
Performance

One of the main differences between Cryovac and vacuum-sealed packaging can be found in their respective performance. Cryovac boasts a range of benefits, including improved product safety, extended shelf life, and increased food quality.

It provides superior product protection, preservation, and a range of added attributes such as leak resistance and durability. While vacuum-sealed products can still provide improved storage and preservation, they may not perform as well as Cryovac products in terms of safety and quality.
Cost

Another key difference between Cryovac and vacuum-sealed packaging is the cost factor. Cryovac products may be more expensive than other types of packaging due to the specialized materials and machinery used in their production.

However, Cryovac products also offer significant benefits that may justify the additional cost for many businesses. Alternatively, vacuum-sealed packaging is generally less costly since it is less specialized and requires less expensive and complicated machinery.

Cryovac and vacuum-sealed packaging offer benefits in their own right; the specialized materials and manufacturing processes used in Cryovac make it an ideal solution for businesses seeking superior product protection and shelf-life extension.

Ultimately, the decision between the two types of packaging will depend on your business’s specific needs and budgetary concerns. Regardless of your choice, vacuum-sealed packaging remains a valuable asset in the food industry and can help your business ensure product safety and quality while reducing waste and costs.

Had a win this weekend.
Had to lift the draw system a bit to get it off the tailgate so the draw didn't rub and cut the straps for the tailgate bag.
So 12mm lift has got it clear.
Finished fridge surround. Though part way into it (as you do....) let's change it to give me a window storage area..........
So another sheet of ply lol and were into it.
Plan is window spot will have recovery gear, etc, in it..
I was thinking of putting the fire extinguisher in there to but it just took up so much space..

I trimmed the tent poles a little and now they fit along side the fridge..

Clothing and sleeping bags will be above fridge.
Water cans will be in with fridge.
Hopefully now with recovery gear out of the draws I'll put a 'lite' tool kit toghter into an expedition box on the rack..

2 major jobs left now.
Lighting..
And a mount to hold the gas bottle, jerry can, expedition box down with maxtracks along side it all.. I can't justify the $400 ish bucks for the arb mounts to hold the gas bottle and jerry can for 1 trip lol..

23 days to go!!https://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/06/34.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/06/35.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/06/36.jpg

Tell em to shove it and go the Raslarr Hooped front and rear bars mate. They look significantly better than the ARB Summit. Shame on ARB for not redeveloping the Summit bar when they developed the front bar package for the 300and the next gen ranger. They should have had another look at the S5.

Tony, IMO the Opposite Lock is the best looking looped bar for the Y62. Have been designed to suit the Nissan V-Motion grille, unlike the ARB bar. Ordered mine, had it painted and installed in about 2 weeks for the same price as a black ARB bar.

Not knowing anything about these, but I see it has a 56VDC output and the unit is called Router power supply, I'm guessing the router is built into the receiver (the square thing) and it broadcasts it's SSID from that.

If so, that's a nice compact setup.

After replacing tie rods and front end bushes a little while back a wheel alignment was due. Finally got around to doing it today.[emoji3581]

I carried a single spare when I did the Canning. But I did use a bluetooth tyre monitor and took plugs.

The tyre monitors worked flawlessly.

If you're running one of the many 10 ply tyres that are around now, they're pretty bloody tough regardless of brand.

I once gashed and wrote off a Mickey Thompson MTZ coming out of the Ouyen BP servo. Was flat by the time I crossed the road. Couldn’t find what caused it either. On my way to an Anne Beadell/Connie Sue trip. So if it can happen in town (annoying but not dangerous) imagine what a stray mallee root out bush can do to a trip. When you buy the Gen 3 Starlink they supply you with the router, the dish, & a 240v power supply. (ie. 240v to 56v). In a mobile situation an inverter supplies 240v from the 12v battery (ie. 12v to 240v to 56v) The 12v-56v power supply replaces the Starlink one. Main reason for doing is that my 3000w inverter/charger has close to 2.5 amps 'overhead' which adds up to a fair drain on the battery if spending long periods online. In addition one less voltage conversion should mean less 'conversion losses'.......... so overall saves on power consumption from the battery.

With Gen 3 the power supply plugs into the router only & the dish is then powered from the router.

So it sounds like it's possible to set it up & test it before you have to start paying the subscription? Did you buy the Starlink locally or direct from Starlink? I'm planning to buy locally (JB HiFi,Officeworks, Bunnings etc) as I can then install it without commencing the subscription until I'm ready, but I didn't know I'd be able to power it up & test it.

Bought it from jb hifi mate, yes powered up and did updates however can’t do much else unless you create an account which I’ll do the day we leave or whatever their billing cycle is

Make sure you all have a thermal break layer between ground and mattress.
Even a layer of foil back sisalation will work wonders, which is what I'm doing for weight and space.
If anyone wants a piece cut up please let me know what size and ill bring it along.
Roll width is 1350 so will work for a queen mattress well.
Can cut down for swags..

What an organisers nightmare, so much effort and lots of expectations and plans hanging. Hope the sun comes out for this and everyone gets what they hoped fo. I would think the Birdsville track will be cactus by the time this is all over and done.

Looks like the Oodnadatta Track is open now which is good as that's our planned route. Few more days here in Flinders then keep on travelling north. . Also looks like rain is downgraded a little for the end of week but still a little way off, keeping those fingers crossed. Plan was to go into Dalhausie Springs then across the Simmo but highly doubt we will cross the Simpson and may have to wait and see to get into Dalhausie as about 10ml predicted tomorrow which will close roads damitt. . What is Plan B in case the rain stops play?We came up with a Plan B this morning as Plan A is out of the question.
We are leaving Coober Pedy early tomorrow morning to head to Curtin Springs for 2 nights. We will day trip into Uluru and do some exploring around there.
From there we will go through Finke and Mt Dare for an overnight stop at Dalhousie, then do the crossing in 3 days rather than the planned 4.

Were losing a day at Dalhousie and a day in the desert but gaining a lot too.

Cuppa and a durrie. Those were the days!

Indeed! :smileyvault-cute-bi

I have the same pic somewhere. There is a small shelter/free camp at Cuppa Creek (not that we could find the actual creek) where I left my mark back in 2009. I suspect a funny durrie may have been involved at the time.

Well we are home.
Wow what a trip!!! We knew we were risking it with the weather and it didn't work for us.
We started at Port Agusta as our main meet point and were meet by a few extras. Great feed at the pub!
After 2 wet nights in coober pedy we made tracks for Uluru..
Jumped into Curtin Springs for 2 nights and a single day at the rock.
The westbrooks tackled the 7.4km return 'Valley of the Winds" hike and geeze the kids slept well that night.
The deviation though allowed the tracks to dry out and we got the green light to go.
Made headway back south to mount dare via Finke.
Wow I have never seen corrugations like these!!!
So bad it rattled my overflow pipe off the radiator.
Granted the factory clip and not been installed correctly but it's been like that for 75000km and finally let go.

Topped up at Mount dare at $3/L !!!!
Then onto Dalhousie Springs.
First night was a great night for the mossies!!! Daym. Nothing kept them away and my legs were pin boards!!
But Wow the Springs!! Will be back for sure.

After a few refreshing swims it was time to depart and tackle the main event.
The French Line!!!

Wow. Simply wow. It was wet. But stunningly green!
It was like driving through flower fields or along paddocks of canola!
The sand was mostly firm which allowed for easy traversing of the dunes.. we most of us anyway but I'll let that member tell his story.

The flats were a fun challenge working our way through some interesting puddles, but mostly following the previous lines.

The days were long doing it in 3 days and when big red finally come into view it was a sense of relief that we were nearly there.
The climb was fun and nailed in the first go.

Birdsville Pub was the rest for the wearing and unfortunately our first night was cut short when the 2 generators that supply the town shut down, and the pub had to close...
Second night was a bit of a disappointment with the meals, but the venue, group and atmosphere stayed high.

We were hopeful that south West qld would have dried more but that was OT the case so we abandoned the strez and shot south on the Birdsville Track.
It was wet!!! Nearly every dip and creek was running and the cars got filthy!

Mungeranie was our first stop south and what a great little pub. Price was ok and meals a bit hit and miss but over a great little stop in the middle of nowhere.

Next night and the last was Farina. Unfortunately we rolled into the bakery too late but we absolutely made up for it in the morning filling up on delicious goods before the 500km home.

The ranger held up well.
It did everything we wanted, and the only time we needed to redo a dune was went momentum wasn't quite there.
17.3lph across the desert due to how firm it was.
Plenty of power there for Big Red.

Was an epic trip with a great crew!!https://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/91.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/92.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/93.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/94.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/95.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/96.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/97.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/98.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/99.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/100.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/101.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/102.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/103.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/104.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/105.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/106.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/107.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/108.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/109.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/110.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/111.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/112.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/113.jpghttps://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/114.jpg

I wanna know what has happened to Stropp's Starlink? Not a dicky bird! Pleased to see you've made it out to Dalhousie Springs & across to Birdsville. I didn't think you would be able to. Thanks Rossco for the pics.

Hey cuppa, starlink was flawless, used by at least half the group to post pictures and messages 👌💯

G`Day Folks.
Pearcey had thought about doing the run with you guys ,gals and kids but things just didn`t turnout time wise for me. Any way Avo rang and wanted to meet up, so I dragged the van to the Gutta and had a great meet with a great bunch of folks.
After, Avo and I were going to head to Fowlers Bay to dong some big fish on the head but alas that didn`t work out either.
Avo did a rush home and I headed down Yorkes to try my luck fishing. LUCK I must have kicked a China-man as I did catch a few but all throw backs.
Thanks for the reports and the paintings of your great trip folks. So glad you all survived and made some great memories.
Next time maybe,Hey.

Very pleased to hear that Stropp, mine is installed, just waiting for one extra cable in the mail to complete it, although probably wont fire it up until shortly before we head off again. I know someone who recently did the lower half of the Canning with a new Starlink set up, & it crapped out fairly early in the trip (router died - although I'm not certain whether it was a Starlink router or aftermarket). If the same had happened to yours I would have been concerned.

We arrived home an hour or so ago. Very tired family and no matter where you've been it's always great to get home.

92 hours behind the wheel and just shy of 6000km, I'm very happy with the little silver wagon even though all the beeps and alarms give me the shits! https://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2024/07/115.jpg

Home sweet home now.

Thanks everyone for a great trip!

We all worked together as a family and it was another perfect trip!

I was very happy with the old Gq, just a broken water pump on day two then it was mostly flawless for the entire trip.

Big clean up this weekend, oh and I finally got up the hard track on big red lol

Great memories stored now everyone!

Full unpack and clean, very uninspiring 8 degree day in rain and winds in Melbourne doing this :(

Not bad for a 34 year old car. Water pump died on the second day but mostly flawless after that.

Used about 2mm of oil on the dipstick after 5500km
