Wood?

Nah, seriously no idea. Next door to my folks had it chopped down. It was a big ass tree.

Sent from my CPH1921 using TapatalkMore asking because it looks like a conifer? Not ideal for burning because of lots of creosote fyi. If you have Android download plantnet, it will identify he wood for you via the bark and you can tell if it's any good for burning. You might not really want the second two trailer loads.

Scratch that I just did it, looks like it's probably oak. That's a good wood for burning [emoji16]

You know what we really need to do? A sneaky weekend away! But, I’ve already line up my next job to tile the kitchen. And get old mate Nic into making some nice floating timber shelves for the kitchen too.

I only found out on Thursday night that my son had a bye this weekend and my Mrs had a girlfriends birthday on Saturday. Would have been good, perfect weather too.

Big day taking advantage of the few good weather days we have here. Battened the roof almost completely, packed one side, installed guttering, completed a quirky end of the shed that isn't square(slab isn't square). I should be able to get the roof installed tomorrow, had the sheets delivered for them yesterday. So stoked at the progress, not too far from finishing the exterior now I think!8522685227

How have you braced that thing nicco? I can't see anything but sure you're all over it.The walls do you mean? It's jammed tight inbetween a retaining wall and a handrail(3x100x200 posts) and the trusses hold the walls plumb. The are diagonal braces in the roof the hold it level and the tophats used as bearers are spacing the trusses correctly.

Sent from my SM-G781B using TapatalkEverything from the old shed will move once it's weatherproof. At the moment it's just away from the edges where it was most likely to leak. Once it's fully sealed I'll start moving the benches. Going to be a process but I'll get there. Re floors the slab was originally poured at around 4x11(11m was max width for the space and I came out 4m from the garage next door) only one end is square hence the hip at one end. The old shed was just a pre-made second hand jobbie, The new shed is made to completely take up the slab, no need to change flooring [emoji16]

Fair enough mate. At least the weatherboards will help.Ooi do you mean hoop iron or something similar? Daz mentioned the same but it really can't move anywhere I want able to square the walls up, just built them level off the top retaining wall, then jammed the last frame in. I can't see it being able to shift left or right and the roof trusses hold the ins and outs. I mean at the end of the day, it's a shed, made from f14 grade timber, it's ridiculously overkill lol. Should be fine. I appreciate the mention though. The external cladding will hold the walls, but the internal walls will be fixed with 16mm ply also, once both sides are fixed on I don't think anything will move anywhere.

Once the frame is sheeted it will be great, won't need the bracing unless it's super heavy or being flogged back and forwards. The door sheet will smash it.

Far from a builder Nicco Mate, and struggling on a little screen to see properly, slider doors?
In my nuffy experience, my double shed sliders, wide open side have nearly taken out half of the hills when winds got out of control. Closed ‘deep’ concrete dropbolts definitely saved the days in storms and user rules of either open full and or closed are needed.
Go crazy and add a shipload of extra slider guides for say 1/4 - 1/2 - 3/4 open to secure the flappy bottom.
I suspect bracing diagonally would be needed more than ever as my kit bought many years ago does have Brother [emoji106][emoji106]

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkHey mate, it's one slider door, 2600w. I am yet to install a lower slider track, I need to grab some from work. The top track is from an industrial castor manufacturer in Clayton, they had some good gear there, and it was bloody well priced. Unfortunately they didn't have the guides so I'm going to install some 50mm angle and use that to guide the entire door. Should be able to capture the entire door on open and capture each end on close, I've left 100mm overhang either side of the door. Add that with a pad bold either side the door hopefully won't go anywhere.

Decided to finish this rig today since i'm stuck home crook as a politician. Also dumped a lot of hours into it last weekend.
Drive train is astronomical. You literally build a transfer case with different ratios. It has functional lockers, front and back. All controlled through a phone app. Flexes more than a Y62!!!!

It's one of those things where you can hook into it and smash it out or take your time like I did. Yeah I didn't *really* have to replace them. But figured the stock ones have done 30 years, so putting heavy duty ones in now should last at least until I die. :)

The swivel hub rebuild kit has been on my shelf for a while, and the XFS damper was starting to lose the battle against the wobble. I hadn't had any shims out of this one, but the previous owner obviously did,
Only one!! remained. Top RHS kingpin bearing. So had to fricken punch out replacements all round.

Sorry for the late reply mr MB. It aint the biggest cave mate, or the bestest. If I could fit a hoist, big screen tv and fireplace in there, then it would be the bestest for sure. There is flexible conduit running right through the entire length or the copper, will be fine. I pretty happy with the outcome of it. I near busted my brain trying to think of ways to make the conduit look good too. I sat on this idea for a long time before it came to fruition.

I might have to do the same as mine just sits on the bench or floor taking up space.I looked up why chainsaws leak oil, apparently Stihl reckon it's a vacuum lock post using it and pressure change as it cools. They also say it's perfectly ok to store it vertically. I guess the idea is to let it cool and leak somewhere not important(like on the floor) and then hang it up once it won't leak anymore. If you have constant leaking you need to look more into it?

See here for reference:

Chainsaw nuffy here Nic mate. Couldn't chainsaw my life out of danger if need be. (campfire wood goes alright though :) )
We got hauled up to Creswick as part of out chainsaw awareness ticket at work.
Now I can't remember why, but an older chap teaching is up there whos be arboring for a century mentioned never to store them other than their sitting position.
I also sometimes work in conjunction with disaster clearing SES legends and I recall speaking to one of them in awe of their chainsaw range setup. And we were speaking about their storage cupboards for them in the trucks and he too mentioned long slots for them because they are required to store them in their horizontal position. Mind you these fellas have some major league gear. Maybe why it's in their code to do so ...

Again, to me scientifically, physically i can't see how it could affect the saw if its hanging. But as soon as I saw your posts I remember the above...

I just followed the Stihl website directions and abit more googling to.come up with that posi. The only real issue I could find with vert storage is if you have a full tank of fuel the fuel may leak through the breather. Usually I stop sawing when I run outta fuel. The Stihl site doesn't specifically mention which position the saw should be stored just makes note that out of direct sunlight and away from the elements and specifically in a dust free environment. I felt the floor is probably far more dust prone than the wall so i guess time will tell if the saw doesn't like it's new home!

Perhaps Rossco might have some clarification?

Someone here taught me the Humboldt Notch also Bidjy. Pretty fun if you're further away than the radius arc from anything important and even then a reverse fall is kinda fun if you don't shit yourself! Got nothing on the pro boys who drop close to expensive shit though!!

Edit: Just refreshed myself online and see you're using a conventional notch. Just to clarify my amateurism!

Bidja
28th July 2022, 11:22 PM
Open face notch but looking at the Humboldt Notch it appears to provide a vertical shear face that would help prevent kick back at cut and read that is more suited for timber that is likely to split more readily. Interesting you mention this must try it out.

The wedges were on hand in case it started to come back (westerly)on to me. The main trunk section was curved and leaning back (W) on me but majority of crown was loaded on the east side (preferred direction of fall). Existing shed on west and concrete tank in south quadrant. Lots of thinking and time passed before taking the saw to it.

Also a N-W wind was gusting of which I capitalised on and success was mine and relief when all worked out I assure you of that.

From my research the water damage mostly comes when the van is packed down and the rain run off dribbles it's way in to the corners.

Nearing the end of my half wall/ fence. My custom fab brackets came out great. I’ve ordered the Stratco CGI mini cladding to go on the back side of the frame. Just need to stain it first.
Also my new bbq will be going there so I have to run hot and cold water, gas and a drain for the sink before the cladding goes on.
My only gripe is the timber for the left cross brace is lighter in colour. But once stained and mostly hidden it will barely be seen.
I’m quite chuffed how well this came out as I’m definitely no ace when it comes to working with wood.

99% finished project.
I’ve run the lecky gpo, just need to do gas, hot and cold water and a drain for the sink on the bbq.

Quite happy how it’s turned out.

This is the prototype bracket I designed and welded up to support the 100mm posts. Drilled and chemset’d studs into the top of the sleepers. Worked out well.

Decided to extend out the old carport so the Patrol was fully under cover. All the timber I already had as I found maybe 40 lengths of it, new and unused, under the bungalow, and the old corrugated sheets were from a fence I removed.
What a PITA though! I was one sheet short!

Still fixing the daughters bloody horse float she bought…
I managed to get new brake assemblies, nothing off the shelf fits this stupid axle so I had to re drill the new backing plates to suit. All new brake lines made up too. New coupling as well and line from that…
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230206/6fcf3e14b0a51e62e685f8b90c4d723a.jpg

Then I had to cut off the busted centre hanger, clean the area up and reinforce and then I tacked in a new hanger for a welder to come out and properly weld it in. My lil’ 135amp Cigweld mig won’t cut it.
I also did the other side too as the hanger was not in good shape.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230206/4e7c79c46627fd8e6413cde26720c05e.jpg

Next is to rewire the entire trailer.

I’m a pissed off at the people who sold this trailer to my daughter. They told her everything was fine and working.
I get there to pick it up. No lights! And the “oh yeah mate there’s no brakes, just don’t drive like a dickhead”. WTF!
I get it home thinking this trailer is dragging and feels heavier than it is.
Well after seeing this…

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230206/66c73869025876f8c37dba52812a3628.jpg

Upon seeing it in person couldn't you just call the deal off?

Kind of a hard situation. The seller is the partner of my daughter’s friend. She was assured all was good, I was just the person to pick up the float. To be honest it all happened fast, my daughter said she wanted to buy a horse float, then all of a sudden I was asked to go pick it up. Trailer electrical issues I figured there was going to be so I was self prepared to an extent and took tools, crimper, electrical tape and a few other bits.
The brakes was a bit of a surprise but in the moment I was thinking it won’t be much to fix. Wrong there. Every single brake component has been changed out now. I’m including new steel brake tube.
The busted spring hanger, I didn’t spot when I picked the float up. I looked around at the trailer but I didn’t look hard enough obviously. My fault on that I guess.
Just a bit annoyed that her “friends” have taken advantage of her. I said to my daughter that she needs to say something to them, but, I know she won’t. Ah well. Thing we do for our kids…

Being a horse owner mate and transporting them around a bit myself. Seeing the condition of that is a little alarming. There is one more major part of that float I would be thoroughly inspecting and that is the floor structure. Check all steel is in good nick and there is no rot in the timber. The old horses have tiny feet for their weight so ground pressure is high. The last thing you want to happen is for one to go through the floor.

Floats are like builders trailers, no maintenance is usually done until it breaks.

I find it kind of funny it being called a float. I had pictured one of those boat or jet-ski trailers that you dump into the water to unload the vessel. Although that one sinks, not floats...
