View Full Version : Takata Airbag Recall - CHECK AGAIN

Guys if you have phoned up your local Nissan dealer and been told that your Patrol is *not* subject to the recall then CHECK AGAIN.... Nissan Australia is holding back information and dealers don't have the full story.

Over the last six months I'd phoned my local dealer *twice* to check and both times they checked the Nissan Australia service database and told me that my 2010 Patrol hadn't been recalled despite being on the list on the Govt website.

After reading about how badly people get messed up by this, and that wet & humid conditions (which perfectly describe by Patrol's life...) really aggravate the problem I thought better safe than sorry and check with Nissan Australia. And what do you know, apparently the database that all the dealers can access incorrectly lists my vehicle (and probably many others) as NOT recalled when it really HAS BEEN RECALLED. If this is not dodgy I don't know what is.... they are arranging to get it fixed next month, but I bet there are hundreds of other owners in the same boat. So gents if you don't want to cop shrapnel in the face

1. Send Nissan an email to check if your vehicle really has been recalled: http://www.nissan.com.au/Forms/Contact-Us

and

2. Check here to see if your vehicle is on the list so you know if you are being fed bullsh*t: https://www.productsafety.gov.au/news/takata-airbag-recalls-affecting-australian-consumers

So if I have a 2002 model GU it's in the recall but only if it has a passenger airbag ? It didn't mention the drivers airbag just the passenger one .
Or am I reading it wrong which is more than likely .

If you have been following the 'Choice' scam busters it seems that most of the replacement bags are faulty as well.

I double checked the recalls and no mention of drivers side airbags all say passenger for our model and our model only has a drivers side air bag but you have to wonder .

This will be interesting. I have 2001 Patrol but with a 2004 steering wheel fitted. Do I just confirm with Nissan that my car is on the list, book it in and no say anything? Lol

Nah... I'm pretty sure the Steering Wheel would still be on the Drivers side but then I s'pose Victoria has been drifting more left than most states so maybe...

Price of failure is too high IMHO Avo. If you're on the list and approaching the expected life, see what the ACCC suggests re: tardy responses from the car companies - there was mention of it in their media releases. I think they were looking for exactly this kind of thing going on...

this is from the ACCC
At the moment, the recalls are voluntary. There is no obligation on manufacturers to recall vehicles with Takata airbags. Because the recalls are voluntary, the manufacturers can choose the remedy that they offer. Generally, where a voluntary recall is conducted, manufacturers will repair or replace the part subject to recall. In the case of Takata airbags, all manufacturers that have issued a voluntary recall are replacing the affected airbags

In the media spot I saw ACCC chairman Rod Sims doing, he suggested that affected vehicle owners request a replacement vehicle until theirs is repaired. Good luck with that!

Anyone else getting flashbacks of Fight Club? Ed Norton's character's scene about 20 mins in...
"I'm a Recall Coordinator"
"My job was to apply the formula..."
"Take the number of vehicles in the field (A); multiply it by the probable rate of failure (B); then multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement (C).
"A" times "B" times "C" equals "X".
If "X" is less than the cost of the recall, we don't do them..."

I'm guessing someone, somewhere stuffed up the formula for Takata airbags...

so after ringing nissan australia 1800 035 035 and getting an answer i was unhappy with i sent an email aswell with the link supplied, well low and behold today i have an email back saying car will be going into nissan service centre for an airbag replacemnet...
after ringing the first idiot and him saying they replace them after 6 years and i had to wait until end of year for a letter i feel like the email to them was more benefical as they then have it on record..

I had an interesting chat with SafeWork NSW last month as we use our Jeeps for our tour business (or did use them) and as the Jeep is an item of plant with a known defective item of safety equipment in the event of an airbag deployment and someone being injured I WOULD be prosecuted under Workplace health and safety law......

Got a letter from Nissan today reminding me that I have not had the airbags replaced

Got a reminder this morning as well. I`m going to wait a bit longer as I have heard that they have been replacing them with the same model as the faulty ones. If & when they start replacing them with ones that are not the same I might get it done. My closest dealer is over 100 km away, wonder if Nissan will pay for the cost of travelling to get it done. Doubt it.....

Does anyone know what work is involved when Nissan replace the airbags?

Is it just the driver and passenger airbags? Side airbags??

Just wanna make sure the dealer don't stuff up my wiring I have around the dash. UHF/EGT/Boost/Temp gauges/Stereo/Camera etc

Received recall ltr months back, got my pass airbag replaced few wks ago with Takata (improved spec they say), probably only threw some desiccant in the mix along with the 5 warranty. Desiccant is probably in effective after 5yrs. Ques dealer re: likely to be another recall as it is Takat & considering the unfortunate fatalities. Reply: Don’t Know.........

Yesterday received new recall notification (dated 4 Sep 17), referred to the Aust driver being killed (Jul 17), will follow up next week with nissan. Mine may be a reminder of the first recall as I am sure their record keeping is up to scratch "not"

Hodge I did not enter on FB but nissan have just supplied a new dash to me (FOC) I paid fitting $540. When I first contacted them (Mar17) they did not want to know me as the service Campain (AWB-008/10) to replace defective dash was for veh up to 6yrs old and I understand includes those VIN JN1TCSY61A036001 - JN1TCSY61AO365922. My veh is 2008 GUIV Wag ST. Tried it on me that I had not mentioned it previously that it was defective. Told them I did not know about it as it was not a nissan recall and that I have serviced my own veh since 10,000 km and that I was fed up with the early teething probs; auto hubs, g/box in & out, leaking water in cab (dash in & out) etc and told them the dealer should have advised me of the moon crater issue when they had they replaced the accel peddle assy under that nissan recall.

Anyway they accepted reasoning and yep got the dash, but it is a pitty they left some screws out and broke me key reader (plastic spool) that they deny (of course...).
I fixed it anyway, some UV curing adhesive I have for fly tying. Not much time for them anymore... good truck now just need some dash screws.

Thanks Bidja . I'll be doing my best to con them into replacing it.
I'm happy for them to replace it while it's apart for airbags. As I understand they are being greedy and have tried to charge people labour on-top as well .
I don't know how much is involved in doing this job though.
If not I'll attack the job my self.
I'm also worried they will ruin my wiring for various things under the dash like radio, gauges, etc ...

Yep, they were going to do dash and bag together but when they opened up the dash box, they say it was broken in half. Did the dash at later visit (another 100km round trip for me). Had just finished partial NADS prior to bag/dash install then went ahead fitted manual boost and my gauges.

Dealer said air bag job is separate and would not contribute to any saving to me for dash install anyway.. $$$$$$$$$$ to them.

Just got a letter today about my '06 being recalled. Tried to get the dash included but the dealer said they'd be going in through the glovebox so no help with the dash replacement labour. Bummer. But at least my airbag won't try to kill me if I get in an accident.

So here we go again. Just gat my recall advise to be ready to recieve a recall notice to replace the passenger airbag that was replaced last year. Anyone got shares in Takata? They wont be worth much now.

AUST post must have done well today. Got my Nissan best wishes letter too "keep your heads down and watch out for airbag discarding sabot" until further recall active advice 31 Mar 2019 (maybe)..

Looks like the desiccant mod did not cut the mustard. So looking fwd to another two days wasted...

After 3 bookings and cancellations due to NO replacement stock... My Patrol finally got the airbags replaced today.

Surprisingly, it took them next to no time. Assumption was they rip the whole dash apart. But no. They do the passenger air bag after removing the glove box. They have done this for a long time now.

If in doubt the easiest way to check your status is this link below.

https://ismyairbagsafe.com.au

once there you can use your rego number not your VIN. If your rego comes up it will redirect you to Nissan site and embed your VIN for yo into the search then search again.

Takes about 1 minute.

If it aint the manufacturer and they ask for data and it's free and it ends in .com.au then it's a data collection/reseller site. Just go straight to the manufacturer website and check. My paranoia kicks in online.

Both mine have been replaced. The passenger's bag recently, and the drivers two years ago. I cant believe they left it so long to replace the passenger bag. Could have been nasty if I'd had an accident.
