MB did you take any photos of the set up for the donk party?
We made a mammoth bonfire collection using some pretty decent fallen trees.
We also collected some wood and made a separate fire area for the cook off.
We will need some help on the Saturday for anyone willing to collect more wood. Not a hard day, a couple of hours with some members and we're done!
We also have a giant tarp that can be put up in between two 20 foot containers if the weather turns south too which is where we have already set up the food prep area, juuuuust in case!
Looking forward to it folks!

Re: fire wood
If we replace any power poles this week... I'll cut some portions up and chuck it on the roof rack to bring it up.
A lot of it is very tough ironbark or bloodwood. Most been in the ground since 70s/80s. Very aged and solid, will burn forever. I'll see what I can do !

Had a mate who worked for Arthurs replacing wooden poles for the newer steel break away ones.
every now and then we'd grab a pole or two and cut up for fire wood. burns very well indeed.

Most of our poles are creo. But you get an odd one that isn't. And they are treated like gold for the firewood enthusiasts at work.
It's shit stuff creo, when burnt. Some people have found out the hard way.

I used to get redgum poles from the SEC back in the day, but it was only the butt section into the ground that was treated from memory, not the whole pole. Does this sound right?

Some poles were completely dipped , some just the bottom bit , this one is tallow wood and termites can't chew it supposedly so they didn't treat it .

Had a crack at a venison dish today, and all I can say is that its rich, gamey and after 4 hrs in the pot, falls apart in the mouth, but dry compared to say lamb. I marinated it overnight in a good red wine also, which changed the clur of the meat slightly. There is no way you could eat the same portion of venison that you could with lamb/pork or beef. It was goulash of sorts so chunks rather than a lump. The Combi pot had it cooked 2 hrs earlier than a conventional oven, and held the temp at circa 160 Deg C for 4 hrs easily, but could not get that down to 150 DgC per the recipe. First time using Charcoal also, and found it burnt hotter than briquettes, but ran out of puff at the 3 hr mark, requiring a small top up. If it was briquettes it would have kept going but maybe not held the temp. if fire coal, a top up would have been required at the 2.5hr mark and a small dose on top as well. Still on the learning curve with this oven, but good response from those at the table tonight.
Judges, do you want a lump of roast or a goulash with big chunky pieces/ i think the outcome would be slightly better with larger lumps in a goulash, but equally happy to try a single lump dish if you prefer - pls advise. I am unsure how we are all going to get thru 7 different versions of a pot roast!

AB was also thinking of taking the Hark oven down there too. Will fit heaps of veggies in there also and can add in your leftover hickory chips for some flavour. I guess we could also foil wrap Winnies spuds too for baked potatoes fireside, good for the kids fun if we give em green sticks to flip em on their own little fire next to us.
I've got a veggie tumbler for the auspit as well so that's another option

I think I went a bit heavy on the paprika, but the red wine also played a part. Turned out so rich we had a struggle finishing it - super heavy and smokey I suppose. Also, the recipe called for the taggliatelli to be added to the broth, but in hindsight it would have been better with the noodles on the plate and a lump of brew on it.
The QC Manager didn't get past sticking his head into the pot - probably would have given him the trots!

OK, I will do half a dozen pizzas mid arvo on Saturday for Nibblies, especially as the weather is turning a little annoying and it would be a welcome gesture to the mid arvo arrivals, then follow up the same for Sunday lunch.

No problem Daz, have actually just been sending PM's with address to each attendee that asks here. My Forum Runner phone app doesn't show names in the poll, only numbers. I would ask AB for help but he's too busy drinking beer in the rain with old mate Pearcey :-)

This is how my beloved is spending Anzac Day weekend. Sorry guys.
This is a classic example of how a cheap broken rubber can ruin a guy's life... and I'm not talking about unplanned kids, I'm talking about the little rubber boots and seals on our vehicles that are there to keep water out of places where water shouldn't be.
So before you go mud surfing, check yourself before you wreck yourself!!
